Holographic measurement of wave propagation in axi-symmetric shells

The report deals with the use of pulsed, double-exposure holographic interferometry to record the propagation of transverse waves in thin-walled axi-symmetric shells. The report is subdivided into sections dealing with: (1) wave propagation in circular cylindrical shells, (2) wave propagation past cut-outs and stiffeners, and (3) wave propagation in conical shells. Several interferograms are presented herein which show the waves reflecting from the shell boundaries, from cut-outs, and from stiffening rings. The initial response of the shell was nearly axi-symmetric in all cases, but nonsymmetric modes soon appeared in the radial response. This result suggests that the axi-symmetric response of the shell may be dynamically unstable, and thus may preferentially excite certain circumferential harmonics through parametric excitation. Attempts were made throughout to correlate the experimental data with analysis. For the most part, good agreement between theory and experiment was obtained. Occasional differences were attributed primarily to simplifying assumptions used in the analysis. From the standpoint of engineering applications, it is clear that pulsed laser holography can be used to obtain quantitative engineering data. Areas of dynamic stress concentration, stress concentration factors, local anomalies, etc., can be readily determined by holography.

Boron--epoxy tubular structure members

Composite materials fabricate thin-walled tubular members which have same load-carrying capabilities as aluminum, titanium, or other metals, but are lighter. Interface between stepped end fitting and tube lends itself to attachments by primary as well as secondary bonding. Interlaminar shear and hoop stress buildup in attachment at end fitting is avoided.

Boundary cooled rocket engines for space storable propellants

An evaluation of an existing analytical heat transfer model was made to develop the technology of boundary film/conduction cooled rocket thrust chambers to the space storable propellant combination oxygen difluoride/diborane. Critical design parameters were identified and their importance determined. Test reduction methods were developed to enable data obtained from short duration hot firings with a thin walled (calorimeter) chamber to be used quantitatively evaluate the heat absorbing capability of the vapor film. The modification of the existing like-doublet injector was based on the results obtained from the calorimeter firings.

Hydrogen film cooling investigation

Effects of flow turning, flow acceleration, and supersonic flow on film cooling were determined experimentally and correlated in terms of an entrainment film cooling model. Experiments were conducted using thin walled metal test sections, hot nitrogen mainstream gas, and ambient hydrogen or nitrogen as film coolants. The entrainment film cooling model relates film cooling effectiveness to the amount of mainstream gases entrained with the film coolant in a mixing layer. The experimental apparatus and the analytical model used are described in detail and correlations for the entrainment fraction and film coolant-to-wall heat transfer coefficient are presented.

Oscillation effects upon film boiling from a sphere.

Heat transfer rates from a silver-plated copper sphere, 0.75 in. in diameter, were studied by high speed photography during oscillations of the sphere in saturated liquid nitrogen and Freon-11. The oscillation frequencies ranged from zero to 13 Hz, and the amplitude-to-diameter ratio varied from zero to 2.67. The sphere was supported by a thin-walled stainless steel tube and carried a thermocouple attached near the lower stagnation point. A Fastax WF-3 16mm movie camera was used at about 2000 frames/sec. The differences in the vapor removal process at lower and higher oscillation frequencies are discussed.

Plasticity and the crack opening displacement in shells.

The plastic deformations and the crack opening displacement, delta, in cylindrical shells with an axial or circumferential crack and spherical shells with a meridional crack are considered. It is assumed that outside the perturbation zone of the crack the shell is subjected to uniform membrane loads perpendicular to the crack. The plastic strip model is used to calculate the plastic zone size. The crack opening displacement is calculated as the crack surface displacement at the crack tips by using the conventional superposition technique. In cylindrical shells with an axial crack the crack surface displacement perpendicular to the shell surface (i.e., the bulging) is also evaluated. The results are applied to a set of existing experimental data on the fracture of cylindrical shells. The tentative conclusion is that in dealing with the fracture of thin-walled structures, among various fracture models delta = constant appears to be the most satisfactory criterion.

The effects of out-of-phase biaxial-strain cycling on low-cycle fatigue.

The effects of out-of-phase or nonsychronous straining on low-cycle fatigue was investigated. Biaxial strains were imposed on thin-walled tubular 7075-T6 aluminum specimens by tension-compression and torsion. Phase angles of 0, 30, 45, 60, and 90 deg were applied between two strains. It was found that out-of-phase cycling has an effect on the failure mode in the low-cycle-fatigue range. An analysis based on the maximum total strain in three-dimensional strain is proposed for treating 'out-of-phase' straining conditions in low-cycle fatigue.

A solar engine using the thermal expansion of metals.

A thermal engine which uses solid metal as the single-phase working substance to convert solar energy into small amounts of mechanical energy is described. Test data are given for an engine whose working substance was annealed 304-type steel welded into a thin-walled tube that was mounted in a bearing at each end (making it free to rotate about its axis) with a flywheel mass at its midpoint. When heated on its upper surface, the tube rotates producing steady power. The theory of the engine is outlined.

Evacuated, displacement compression mold

A process of molding long thin-wall tubular bodies from thermosetting plastic molding compounds is described wherein the tubular body lengths may be several times the diameters. The process is accomplished by loading a predetermined quantity of molding compound into a female mold cavity closed at one end by a force mandrel. After closing the other end of the female mold with a balance mandrel, the loaded cavity is evacuated by applying a vacuum of from one-to-five mm pressure for a period of fifteen-to-thirty minutes. The mold temperature is raised to the minimum temperature at which the resin constituent of the compound will soften or plasticize and a pressure of 2500 psi is applied.

Nonlinear vibration of cylindrical shells

The large amplitude vibration of a thin-walled cylindrical shell is analyzed. A perturbation method is used to solve the steady-state forced vibration problem. The simply-supported boundary conditions and the circumferential periodicity condition are satisfied. The resulting solution indicates that in addition to the fundamental mode, the response contains asymmetric modes as well as axisymmetric modes with the frequency twice that of the fundamental mode. Vibrations involving a single driven mode response are investigated. The results indicate that the nonlinearity is either softening or hardening depending on the mode. The vibrations involving both a driven mode and a companion mode are also investigated. An experimental investigation is conducted, and the results are in qualitative agreement with the theory. 'Nonstationary' response is detected at some frequencies for large amplitude response in which the amplitude drifts from one value to another. Various nonlinear phenomena are observed and comparisons with the theoretical results are made.

External tank gaseous oxygen line simulated lightning tests

Tests were made to evaluate the effects of lightning strikes on the shuttle external tank gaseous oxygen pressurization line. This line, designed to conduct gaseous oxygen may also act as a lightning conductor. Questions have been raised as to the potential hazard of this line as a lightning conductor with speculation as to the damage that might occur to the pressurization line, and the adjacent thermal protective surfaces, from a lightning strike. The region of investigation was from above the cone of the launch tower lightning protection to 15.24 km (50, 000 ft) altitude. Tests were performed on samples of thin wall stainless steel tubing filled with gaseous oxygen under simulated flight conditions. No specimen malfunctions occurred when the tests were conducted according to JSC specifications. Based on the JSC specifications and the results of these tests, it is concluded that a lightning strike will not cause a malfunction of the shuttle external tank gaseous oxygen line made of the representative material tested.
