Components for solar energy

A requirement for the direct technological utilization of solar energy is a device for capturing and absorbing the available sunlight. These devices are commonly termed collectors. Because of the highly variable nature of sunlight, a facility for storing the collected energy is often essential. A device for direct conversion of light into electricity, which depends for operation on incident sunlight, is the photovoltaic cell. These components for solar energy systems are considered.

Use of calibration maneuvers for improved performance of strapdown attitude reference systems

Conventional strapdown configurations require precise knowledge of the orientation of the gyro input axes as well as a moderately large, fast computer to provide inertial attitude. This paper presents the mechanization and discusses the operation and performance of an omnidirectional, strapdown pointing control system called All Sky Pointer which does not require precise gyro alignment or a sophisticated computer. Errors caused by gyro-optical sensor misalignment, gyro-integrator bias, and scale factor error are compensated for by the use of calibration maneuvers. Control and computation are provided by an electronics package utilizing technology similar to that found in hand-held calculators. Simulation results indicate that sub arc-minute pointing performance is possible and pointing errors are reduced by as much as an order of magnitude compared with uncompensated systems.

Biomedical technology transfer: Applications of NASA science and technology

The major efforts of the Stanford Biomedical Applications Team Program at the Stanford University School of Medicine for the period from October 1, 1975 to September 31, 1976 are covered. A completed EMG biotelemetry system which monitors the physiological signals of man and animals in space related research is discussed. The results of a pilot study involving lower body negative pressure testing in cardiac patients has been completed as well as the design and construction of a new leg negative pressure unit for evaluating heart patients. This technology utilizes vacuum chambers to stress the cardiovascular system during space flight. Laboratory tests of an intracranial pressure transducer, have been conducted. Extremely stable long term data using capacative pressure sensors has lead to the order of commercially manufactured monitoring systems base. Projects involving commercialization are: flexible medical electrodes, an echocardioscope, a miniature biotelemetry system, and an on-line ventricular contour detector.
