Aircraft landing dynamics facility carriage weld test program

A welded tubular structure constructed of low alloy high strength quenched and tempered steel was tested. The consistency of the mechanical strengths and chemical composition and the degree of difficulty of obtaining full strength welds with these steels is characterized. The results of constructing and testing two typical connections which are used in the structure design are reported.

Test program to provide confidence in liquid oxygen cooling of hydrocarbon fueled rocket thrust chambers

In previous tests of liquid oxygen cooling of hydrocarbon fueled rocket engines, small oxygen leaks developed at the throat of the thrust chamber and film cooled the hot gas side of the chamber wall without resulting in catastrophic failure. However, more testing is necessary to demonstrate that a catastropic failure would not occur if cracks developed further upstream between the injector and the throat, where the boundary layer has not been established. Since under normal conditions cracks are expected to form in the throat region of the thrust chamber, cracks must be initiated artificially in order to control their location. Several methods of crack initiation are discussed here.

Test program on the contamination of ultraviolet region mirrors by Apollo Telescope Mount materials

Results are presented of testing performed to measure the effects of material outgas products on the reflectances of ultraviolet-region mirrors. These tests were to provide data on changes of ultraviolet reflectances of first-surface mirrors which had been exposed to the outgas products of selected materials under specific time and thermal-vacuum conditions. The requirement for such data was based on the extreme sensitivity of the sophisticated optical instruments in the Skylab mission's Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) to condensed outgas products from materials, and on the desire to insure that no serious hazard of contaminating these instruments existed.

Resonant AC power system proof-of-concept test program, volume 2, appendix 1

This report contains two volumes. The main text (Volume 1) summarizes the tests results and gives a detailed discussion of the response of three early, first generation configurations of ac power system IRAD breadboards to the contracted tests imposed on them. It explains photographs, measurements, and data calculations, as well as any observed anomalies or lessons learned. This volume (No 2, Appendix 1, Test Results and Data), published under separate cover, includes all of the data taken on the 1.0 kW single-phase; 5.0 kW three-phase; and 25.0-kW three-phase system breadboards. The format of this data is raw, i.e., it is a direct copy of the data sheets for the test data notebook.

Determination of efficiencies, loss mechanisms, and performance degradation factors in chopper controlled dc vehical motors. Section 1: Test program results and recommendations

The conventional series motor model is discussed as well as procedures for obtaining, by test, the parameters necessary for calculating performance and losses. The calculated results for operation from ripple free DC are compared with observed test results, indicating approximately 5% or less error. Experimental data indicating the influence of brush shift and chopper frequency are also presented. Both factors have a significant effect on the speed and torque relationships. The losses and loss mechanisms present in a DC series motor are examined and an attempt is made to evaluate the added losses due to harmonic currents and fluxes. Findings with respect to these losses is summarized.

MSAT PIM and multipactor test program

The MSAT satellite system will provide telephone, fax and low data rate communication services to mobile users throughout North America. The space segment of the MSAT system must supply high radiated power densities on the ground to allow communication with small mobile terminals. Therefore, the high power handling requirement (multipactor, PIM and thermal dissipation) are very important performance parameters for mobile satellite communication systems. Large separate transmit and receive L-Band deployable reflectors are used on MSAT to reduce the risk of PIM (passive intermodulation). In addition, PIM and multipactor avoidance were major design drivers for the L-Band high power transmit output network and antenna. This paper provides an overview of the designs selected and the extensive qualification and verification program undertaken on MSAT to meet the challenging PIM and multipactor requirements. The test campaigns at component, sub-system and system levels and the associated test results are presented. The manufacturing and assembly approaches taken to allow the PIM and Multipactor to be met are also briefly described.

A study and analysis of the MSFC lunar roving vehicle dust profile test program

The dust problem and fender design for the LRV were studied under reduced gravity with a lunar soil simulant. The test equipment, soil characteristics of the lunar soil simulant, and the test procedures are described. It is concluded: (1) The fender plus flap design is adequate. (2) Vacuum conditions tend to eliminate or reduce suspended dust clouds. (3) Reduced gravity conditions tend to increase the dust problems. (4) Slow starting speeds are necessary to minimize slip and reduce initial dust generation.

Strapdown gyro test program

The power spectral noise characteristic performance of the Teledyne two-degree-of-freedom dry tuned gimbal gyroscope was determined. Tests were conducted using a current configuration SDG-5 gyro in conjunction with test equipment with minor modification. Long term bias stability tests were conducted as well as some first difference performance tests. The gyro, test equipment, and the tests performed are described. Results are presented.

Seal material development test program

A program designed to characterize an experimental fluoroelastomer material designated AF-E-124D, is examined. Tests conducted include liquid nitrogen load compression tests, flexure tests and valve seal tests, ambient and elevated temperature compression set tests, and cleaning and flushing fluid exposure tests. The results of these tests indicate the AF-E-124D is a good choice for a cryogenic seal, since it exhibits good low temperature sealing characteristics and resistance to permanent set. The status of this material as an experimental fluorelastomer is stressed and recommended. Activity includes definition and control of critical processing to ensure consistent material properties. Design, fabrication and test of this and other materials is recommended in valve and static seal applications.

Experimental test program for evaluation of solid lubricant coating as applied to compliant foil gas bearings to 315 deg C

An experimental apparatus and test procedure was developed to compare the performance of two solid lubricant coatings for air lubricated compliant foil gas bearings in the temperature range of 25 to 315 C. Polyimide bonded additive (SBGC) were tested extensively for durability and frictional characteristics. A partial arc bearing constructed of Inconel X-750 was coated on the bore with one of these coatings. The foil was subjected to repeated start/stop cycles. Performance comparisons reveal that although both coatings survive thousands of start/stop cycles, only the PBGF coated bearing achieves the specified 9000 start/stops. There is enough wear on the SBGC coated bearing to warrant termination of the test prior to 9000 start/stop cycles due to coating failure. The frictional characteristics of the PBGF are better at the elevated temperatures than at lower temperatures; a marked increase in sliding friction occurs as the temperature decreases. The SBGC maintains relatively constant frictional characteristics independent of operating temperature.
