Triple-Junction III-V Solar Cells with 39.5% AM1.5G and 34.2% AM0 Efficiencies

III-V multijunction solar cells have the highest efficiencies of any PV technology. These devices are currently the dominant space PV technology, and are being investigated for a wide range of other applications where efficiency is a key metric. In this presentation, we describe a 3-junction cell with the highest 1-sun efficiency to date: 39.5% under the global spectrum, which is higher than previous 6-junction devices. When tuned for the space spectrum, the cell achieves 34.2% beginning-of-life efficiency, without consideration for radiation hardness. These efficiency improvements are enabled by combining advances in device architectures and extended-defect control strategies. This latest 3-junction device includes a high-performance front-junction GaInP top cell, an optically-thick strain-balanced quantum well middle cell, and a lattice-mismatched GaInAs bottom cell with record performance despite dislocations. These advances not only allow high efficiency photovoltaics for both space and terrestrial PV applications, but also help enable new applications of III-V materials.

Measurements of WH and ZH production in the $$H \rightarrow b\bar{b}$$ decay channel in pp collisions at $$13\,\text {Te}\text {V}$$ with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of the Standard Model Higgs boson decaying into a $$b\bar{b}$$ b b ¯ pair and produced in association with a W or Z boson decaying into leptons, using proton–proton collision data collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS detector, are presented. The measurements use collisions produced by the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {Te}\text {V}$$ s = 13 Te , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $$139\,\mathrm {fb}^{-1}$$ 139 fb - 1 . The production of a Higgs boson in association with a W or Z boson is established with observed (expected) significances of 4.0 (4.1) and 5.3 (5.1) standard deviations, respectively. Cross-sections of associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into bottom quark pairs with an electroweak gauge boson, W or Z , decaying into leptons are measured as a function of the gauge boson transverse momentum in kinematic fiducial volumes. The cross-section measurements are all consistent with the Standard Model expectations, and the total uncertainties vary from 30% in the high gauge boson transverse momentum regions to 85% in the low regions. Limits are subsequently set on the parameters of an effective Lagrangian sensitive to modifications of the WH and ZH processes as well as the Higgs boson decay into $$b\bar{b}$$ b b ¯ .

Interlayer Exciton Polarons in Mesoscopic V 2 O 5 for Broadband Optoelectronic Synapses

Persistent photoconductivity and optoelectronic synaptic behavior are demonstrated in solution-processed mesoscopic α-phase vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) thin films. First-principles simulations coupled with the two-site Holstein polaron hopping model show that vacancies at the terminal oxygen position lead to long recombination times because photoexcited electrons and holes reside on different layers separated by the van der Waals gap, forming a weakly coupled interlayer exciton polaron. Mid-gap polaronic states also significantly broaden the photoresponse of the films to span across visible and infrared wavelengths. By controlling the amplitude/intensity, duration, and/or number of optical pulses, tunable optoelectronic memory functions, such as short-term and long-term plasticity, are experimentally established in V 2 O 5 -based optoelectronic synapses. Furthermore, device fabrication was extended to mechanically flexible ultrathin glass substrates. Flexible optoelectronic synapses maintained high performance after 150 bending cycles.

Increasing Ligand Denticity and Stability for a Water Oxidation Electrocatalyst using P(V) as Connecting Element

Carboxylate complexes have risen to prominence in the field of water oxidation catalysis. Here for the first time we use the higher valence of phosphinates [P(V)] relative to that of carboxylates [C(IV)] to increase ligand denticity. We describe the synthesis and characterization of a new dianionic pentadentate ligand, bcpq 2− that contains a tridentate 2,2’-bipyridine-6-carboxylato moiety, in addition to a 6’-phosphinato substituent that acts as fourth ligand and bears a side arm containing a quinoline, the fifth ligand. The new bcpq ligand allows formation of [Ru(II)(bcpq)(L)] (2 a–b, L=picoline or isoquinoline) and in preliminary results, of a Co(II) complex. NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse and square wave voltammetry were used to characterize 2 a–b, with 2 b being characterized more extensively as a catalyst. Bulk electrolysis over 15 h at pH 7 was also used, showing that 2 b gave 100±5 % faradaic efficiency and remained completely homogeneous, whereas 1 b was no longer homogeneous; this comparison conclusively shows the advantage of the added denticity in the electrocatalytic context. Replacing carboxylate with P(V) phosphinate with an added arm may be used in other ligand systems to enhance the durability of homogeneous catalysts.

Building [U IV 70 (OH) 36 (O) 64 ] 4– oxocluster frameworks with sulfate, transition metals, and U V

Uranium (IV) oxide clusters, colloids, and materials are designed and studied for 1) nuclear materials applications, 2) understanding environmental fate and transport of actinides, and 3) exploring the complex bonding behavior of open-shell f-elements. U IV -oxyhydroxsulfate clusters are particularly relevant in industrial processes and in nature. Recent studies have shown that counter-cations to these polynuclear anions differentiate rich structural topologies in the solid-state. Here we present nine different structures with wheel-shaped [U 70 (OH) 36 (O) 64 (SO 4 ) 60 ] 4- (U 70 ) linked into 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional frameworks with sulfate, divalent transition metals (Cr II , Fe II , Co II , Ni II ) and U V . Here, the small-angle X-ray scattering of these phases dissolved in butylamine reveals differing supramolecular assembly of U 70 clusters, controlled primarily by sulfates. However, observed trends in transition metal linking guide future design of U 70 -materials with different topologies. Finally, U 70 linking via U IV -O-U V -O-U IV bridges presents a rare example of mixed oxidation state uranium oxides without disorder.

Optimal Polynomial Smoothers and One‐Sided V‐Cycles for Poisson Problems

The solution to the Poisson equation arising from the spectral element discretization of the incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations needs robust preconditioning strategies. One such strategy is multigrid. To realize the potential of multigrid methods, effective smoothing strategies are needed. Chebyshev polynomial smoothers, in conjunction with pointwise Jacobi or additive Schwarz methods (ASMs), prove to be an effective smoother. Other polynomial smoothers, however, may provide superior convergence to the multigrid preconditioner. The authors compare the standard Chebyshev polynomial smoothers to both the novel fourth‐kind Chebyshev polynomial smoothers proposed by Lottes as well as smoothers based on the polynomial of best uniform approximation to as proposed by Kraus, Vassilevski, and Zikatanov. At the cost of symmetry, further improvements may be made. For example, a order polynomial smoother on both sides of the V‐cycle may be substituted with an order polynomial smoother on one side at no additional cost. The choice of omitting the postsmoother in favor of higher‐order polynomial presmoothing is advantageous in cases where the multigrid approximation property constant is large. The authors consider a 2D model problem based on finite differences to motivate the choice of polynomial smoother, order, and whether to apply postsmoothing for the target application of high‐order ‐geometric multigrid methods for GPU architectures. Results from both domains demonstrate the substantial improvement of these approaches over the standard Chebyshev polynomial smoother with a symmetric V‐cycle.

Bifunctional Ionic Covalent Organic Networks for Enhanced Simultaneous Removal of Chromium(VI) and Arsenic(V) Oxoanions via Synergetic Ion Exchange and Redox Process

Chromium (VI) and arsenic (V) oxoanions are major toxic heavy metal pollutants in water threatening both human health and environmental safety. Here, the development is reported of a bifunctional ionic covalent organic network (iCON) with integrated guanidinium and phenol units to simultaneously sequester chromate and arsenate in water via a synergistic ion-exchange-redox process. The guanidinium groups facilitate the ion-exchange-based adsorption of chromate and arsenate at neutral pH with fast kinetics and high uptake capacity, whereas the integrated phenol motifs mediate the Cr(VI)/Cr(III) redox process that immobilizes chromate and promotes the adsorption of arsenate via the formation of Cr(III)-As(V) cluster/complex. The synergistic ion-exchange-redox approach not only pushes high adsorption efficiency for both chromate and arsenate but also upholds a balanced Cr/As uptake ratio regardless of the change in concentration and the presence of interfering oxoanions.

Perovskite Photovoltaic Devices with Carbon-Based Electrodes Withstanding Reverse-Bias Voltages up to –9 V and Surpassing IEC 61215:2016 International Standard

One of the key challenges of perovskite photovoltaics (PV) is the long-term stability. Although efforts are made to improve the lifetime of perovskite PV devices, their degradation under reverse-bias conditions is barely addressed. Herein, perovskite solar cells with carbon-based electrodes are presented which demonstrate superior resilience against reverse-bias-induced degradation. Although their breakdown voltage is identified to be at approximately -3.6 V, cells do not degrade until the applied reverse-bias exceeds -9 V. Two main degradation mechanisms are identified: 1) iodine loss due to hole tunneling into perovskite, which takes place even at low reverse-bias but decomposes the perovskite only after long time durations; and 2) rapid heating at large reverse-bias leading to formation of PbI2, which starts at shunts and then follows the path of the least resistance for the cell current, which is primarily influenced by the electrode sheet resistances. Finally, perovskite solar modules with carbon-based electrodes are demonstrated, which are subjected to a "hotspot" test described in the IEC 61215:2016 international standard at an accredited module testing laboratory. Passing this accelerated test for the first time confirms the superior stability of perovskite PV devices with carbon-based electrodes and highlights their large industrialization potential.

Friction-based recycling: an evaluation of friction extrusion for fabricating Ti-6Al-4 V wire fabricated from machining chip feedstock

Abstract Titanium and its alloys are used in aviation and automobile industries due to their remarkable strength to weight ratio, but machining loss commonly is high with ~ 80 wt% of the material being converted to scrap. Recycling post-consumer Ti scrap directly into solid bulk products is a potential solution for repurposing valuable material. Further, eliminating fresh Ti sponge during recycling might lead to lower energy and greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, a solid-phase process known as friction extrusion was utilized to recycle Ti-6Al-4 V machining chips into solid wires which could be used as feedstock in additive manufacturing. The friction consolidation technique was first used to convert chips with varying degrees of oxygen content into solid billets for its use as feedstock material in subsequent friction extrusion. The extrudates were fabricated above the beta transition temperature, which was achieved by selecting the rotation rate and feed rate, to process the billets near 1000 °C using a tungsten-lanthana extrusion die. This work presents the first occurrence of friction extruded titanium alloy wires. The effect of friction extrusion on microstructural features, tensile properties, and texture are reported. Overall, the friction extrusion method is capable of directly recycling Ti-6Al-4 V scrap into extruded wire.

Design of a V–Ti–Ni alloy with superelastic nano-precipitates

Stress-induced martensitic transformations enable metastable alloys to exhibit enhanced strain hardening capacity, leading to improved formability and toughness. As is well-known from transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steels, however, the resulting martensite can limit ductility and fatigue life due to its intrinsic brittleness. In this work, we explore an alloy design strategy that utilizes stress-induced martensitic transformations but does not retain the martensite phase. This strategy is based on the introduction of superelastic nano-precipitates, which exhibit reverse transformation after initial stress-induced forward transformation. To this end, utilizing ab-initio simulations and thermodynamic calculations we designed and produced a V 45 Ti 30 Ni 25 (at%) alloy. In this alloy, TiNi is present as nano-precipitates uniformly distributed within a ductile V-rich base-centered cubic (bcc) β matrix, as well as being present as a larger matrix phase. We characterized the microstructure of the produced alloy using various scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. Furthermore, the bulk mechanical properties of the alloy are demonstrated through tensile tests, and the reversible transformation in each of the TiNi morphologies were confirmed by in-situ TEM micro-pillar compression experiments, in-situ high-energy diffraction synchrotron cyclic tensile tests, indentation experiments, and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The observed transformation pathways and variables impacting phase stability are critically discussed.

Hypereutectic Al-Ce-X (X=Mn, Cr, V, Mo, W) alloys fabricated by laser powder-bed fusion

Here, we characterize the microstructures and high-temperature mechanical properties of Al-2Ce and ternary Al-2Ce-1X (at.%) alloys fabricated by laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF), where X = Mn, Cr, V, Mo, and W are slow-diffusing transition metals. All ternary alloys show a hypereutectic microstructure in the as-LPBF state, containing an interconnected network of eutectic Al 11 Ce 3 phases (~10 vol.%) and an additional population of submicron, equiaxed Al 20 CeX 2 primary precipitates (~10 vol.%) which are isomorphous among these five alloys. Similar microstructures are present in arc-melted rods and atomized powders but are coarser due to the slower cooling rates in these processes. The hardness of the as-LPBF ternary Al-Ce-X alloys (1300–1400 MPa) is higher than that of the binary Al-Ce alloy (~1100 MPa) due to the higher volume fraction of strengthening phases. Furthermore, during exposure at 400 °C for up to three months, greater hardness retention is achieved in the ternary Al-Ce-X alloys (65–75%) than in the binary Al-Ce alloy (~55%), which is attributed to the extreme coarsening resistance of the Al 20 CeX 2 precipitates imparted by the very slow-diffusing ternary solute. These coarsening-resistant Al 20 CeX 2 precipitates also substantially improve alloy creep resistance, increasing the threshold stress for dislocation creep at 300°C from ~32 MPa for the binary Al-Ce alloy to ~77–100 MPa for the ternary Al-Ce-X alloys, and at 400°C from <10 MPa for the binary Al-Ce alloy to >40 MPa for the ternary Al-Ce-V alloy.

Preliminary investigation of 48 V-labeled VO(acac) 2 for cancer imaging: An initial proof-of-concept study

In this preliminary study, a procedure for synthesizing novel PET radiotracer vanadium-48-labeled-vanadyl acetylacetonate was developed, including radioisotope production via cyclotron, separation of 48 V, chelation as 48 VO(acac) 2 , and assessment through in vitro cellular studies. We employed the beam-stop setup in a cyclotron as the target holder to irradiate titanium foils in the reaction of nat Ti (p,n) 48 V. The radioisotope production rate was 4.84 ± 0.67 μCi/μA-h. Overall radiochemical yield was 12.86 ± 0.51% with gamma-ray spectroscopy showing no detectable contaminant peaks. HPLC of 48 VO(acac) 2 showed a retention time (1:48) corresponding closely to that (1:50) of commercial VO(acac) 2 , verifying the successful synthesis of 8VO(acac) 2 . In vitro cellular studies demonstrated radiotracer uptake and saturation around 0.48 nM. These studies pave the way for improving methodologies and in vivo experiments, including imaging studies, in future investigations.

A new perspective on the initial hydrogenation of $\mathrm{TiFe_{0.9}M_{0.1}}$ ($\mathrm{M = V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni}$) gained from surface oxide analysis and nucleation thermodynamics

Despite the promise of TiFe-based alloys as low-cost solid-state hydrogen storage materials with mild operating conditions and reasonable hydrogen capacity, their initial hydrogenation process is difficult, hindering broad utilization. The effect of alloying element on the initial hydrogenation kinetics of TiFe alloys, TiFe 0.9 M 0.1 (M = V, Cr, Fe, Co and Ni), was evaluated by analyzing changes to the passivating surface oxide layer that inhibits hydrogen permeation, as well as the ease of initial-stage hydrogen absorption into the underlying matrix. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atom probe tomography revealed key variations in surface oxide compositions and thinning of the passivating oxide layer compared to pure TiFe, which suggests suppressed oxide growth by alloying-induced elemental redistribution. At the same time, density functional theory calculations predicted exothermic formation of hydride nuclei when alloying with V or Cr, as well as a reduced nucleation barrier when alloying with Co or Ni. Overall, these results are consistent with the observed experimental trend of the activation kinetics. We propose that improvements in activation kinetics of TiFe with alloying arises from the combined effect of reduced passivating oxide thickness and easier hydride nucleation, offering a starting point for alloy design strategies towards further improvement.

Simultaneously improved J sc and V oc achieving 19.15% efficiency in ternary blend polymer solar cell containing a Y-type acceptor with thiophene based end groups

Simultaneously enhancing the short-circuit current density (J sc ) and open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of current state-of-the-art polymer solar cells (PSCs) containing wide bandgap polymers as donors and Y6 derivatives as acceptors is of great challenge but essential for further improvement of the photovoltaic performances. Here, in this work, two Y-type non-fullerene acceptors of BTP-T and BTP-TCl were designed and successfully synthesized with relatively weak electron-accepting thiophene based end groups, where blue-shifted absorption and upshifted LUMO energy levels were achieved to fill the well-known absorption gap at 700 nm of typical binary devices based Y-type molecules and rise the output voltage, respectively. Simultaneously increased J sc and V oc were achieved in ternary blend devices containing D18:BTP-eC9:BTP-TCl with a significantly improved PCE up to 19.15 %, which is over 7 % increase compared to the binary device. Our results illustrated the great potential of rational design of Y6 derivatives for constructing ternary PSCs to improve their performances.

An extension to V ORO ++ for multithreaded computation of Voronoi cells

V ORO ++ is a software library written in C++ for computing the Voronoi tessellation, a technique in computational geometry that is widely used for analyzing systems of particles. V ORO ++ was released in 2009 and is based on computing the Voronoi cell for each particle individually. Here, we take advantage of modern computer hardware, and extend the original serial version to allow for multithreaded computation of Voronoi cells via the OpenMP application programming interface. We test the performance of the code, and demonstrate that it can achieve parallel efficiencies greater than 95% in many cases. Further, the multithreaded extension follows standard OpenMP programming paradigms, allowing it to be incorporated into other programs. We provide an example of this using the VoroTop software library, performing a multithreaded Voronoi cell topology analysis of up to 102.4 million particles.

Redox-active dinuclear oxorhenium(V) pyrazolate complexes

Four new structurally similar dinuclear oxorhenium(V) complexes, [{Re(O)X(PPh 3 )} 2 (μ-O)(μ-4-x'-pz) 2 ], where pz = pyrazolate anion, X = X' = Cl (1) and Br (4), X = Cl, X' = Br (2), and X = Br, X' = Cl (3), have been synthesized and characterized. Little variation in spectroscopic features – 1 H NMR, IR, UV–Vis – exists among the four complexes. All complexes possess a bent Re-O-Re core as well as distorted octahedral coordination geometry around the rhenium centers. Finally, a reversible one-electron electrochemical process is observed at approximately 0.84 V vs. Fc + /Fc in all four complexes; however, changing the terminal halide from chloride to bromide slightly destabilizes the oxidized Re(VI) center.

Spark plasma sintered, MoNbTi-based multi-principal element alloys with Cr, V, and Zr

MoNbTi, MoNbTiZr, CrMoNbTiZr, and MoNbTiVZr multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) and investigated for use in high-strength applications. The fabrication method by SPS and powder metallurgy differs from those presented in the prior literature, where most MPEAs are fabricated using arc melting (AM) methods. Here cryogenic milling was used to maximize potential defect sinks (grain boundaries) for radiation resistance and to increase ultimate tensile strength through the Hall-Petch effect. SPS was chosen for consolidation in order to maintain a fine-grained structure during densification. Each alloy was characterized using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy for phase identification and compositional homogeneity. The base ternary alloy MoNbTi presented a predominantly single BCC system with minor cubic phases. The introduction of additional alloying elements—Zr, V, and Cr—heightened the phase complexity and increased the fractions of a secondary BCC phase and an HCP phase from Zr. The addition of Cr induced a larger fraction of the Laves phase to form. The addition of V caused the precipitation of small Mo inclusions. Thermodynamic analysis was performed to understand the separation of phases in each alloy. Discrepancies among the phase predictions generated by thermodynamic models, phases previously presented in the literature, and the characterization results suggest that MPEA fabrication methods, especially solid-state methods, require significant investigation to ensure that alloys can remain stable throughout their anticipated service lifetimes.

Intrinsic and hard magnetic properties of (Sm 1-x R x )-Fe-Co-V alloys (R = Gd, Zr, and Y)

SmFe 12 -based compounds with the ThMn 12 -type structure have a great potential as future rare-earth-lean permanent magnets. However, their reliance on stabilizing non-magnetic elements has impeded practical applications. Therefore, elements such as Gd, Y, and Zr have gained popularity as candidates to minimize the need for stabilizing elements by reducing the formation energy of the ThMn 12 (1:12) phase. Here, this study examines the effect of Gd, Y, and Zr on the intrinsic and hard magnetic properties in (Sm 1-x R x ) 1.2 Fe 8.4 Co 2.1 V 1.5 (or with nominal composition of (Sm 1-x R x ) 9.1 Fe 63.6 Co 15.9 V 11.4 ) with a single 1:12 phase for 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3. Notably, samples substituted with Gd exhibit an enhanced temperature dependence of the magnetic properties.
