Percutaneous transluminal alcohol septal myocardial ablation after aortic valve replacement

When left ventricular outflow tract obstruction develops after aortic valve replacement, few treatment choices have been available until now. We present a patient with prior aortic valve replacement who developed left ventricle outflow tract obstruction that was successfully treated with a percutaneous transcoronary myocardial septal alcohol ablation. This technique is a useful tool for the treatment of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, especially in those patients with prior heart surgery. Copyright 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Relating land surface, water table, and weathering fronts with a conceptual valve model for headwater catchments

Knowing little about how porosity and permeability are distributed at depth, we commonly develop models of groundwater by treating the subsurface as a homogeneous black box even though porosity and permeability vary with depth. One reason for this depth variation is that infiltrating meteoric water reacts with minerals to affect porosity in localized zones called reaction fronts. We are beginning to learn to map and model these fronts beneath headwater catchments and show how they are distributed. The subsurface landscapes defined by these fronts lie subparallel to the earth-air interface but with lower relief. They can be situated above, below, or at the water table. These subsurface landscapes of reaction are important because porosity developed from weathering can control subsurface water storage. In addition, porosity often changes at the weathering fronts, and when this affects permeability significantly, the front can act like a valve that re-orients water flowing through the subsurface. We explore controls on the positions of reaction fronts under headwater landscapes by accounting for the timescales of erosion, chemical equilibration, and solute transport. One strong control on the landscape of subsurface reaction is the land surface geometry, which is in turn a function of the erosion rate. In addition, the reaction fronts, like the water table, are strongly affected by the lithology and water infiltration rate. We hypothesize that relationships among the land surface, reaction fronts, and the water table are controlled by feedbacks that can push landscapes toward an “ideal hill”. In this steady state, reaction-front valves partition water volumes into shallow and deep flowpaths. Furthermore, these flows dissolve low- and high-solubility minerals, respectively, allowing their reaction fronts to advance at the erosion rate. This conceptualization could inform better models of subsurface porosity and permeability, replacing the black box.

Complementary Measurements of Residual Stresses Before and After Base Plate Removal in an Intricate Additively-Manufactured Stainless-Steel Valve Housing

Residual stress measurements using neutron diffraction and the contour method were performed on a valve housing made from 316 L stainless steel powder with intricate three-dimensional internal features using laser powder-bed fusion additive manufacturing. The measurements captured the evolution of the residual stress fields from a state where the valve housing was attached to the base plate to a state where the housing was cut free from the base plate. Making use of this cut, thus making it a non-destructive measurement in this application, the contour method mapped the residual stress component normal to the cut plane (this stress field is completely relieved by cutting) over the whole cut plane, as well as the change in all stresses in the entire housing due to the cut. The non-destructive nature of the neutron diffraction measurements enabled measurements of residual stress at various points in the build prior to cutting and again after cutting. Good agreement was observed between the two measurement techniques, which showed large, tensile build-direction residual stresses in the outer regions of the housing. The contour results showed large changes in multiple stress components upon removal of the build from the base plate in two distinct regions: near the plane where the build was cut free from the base plate and near the internal features that act as stress concentrators. These observations should be useful in understanding the driving mechanisms for builds cracking near the base plate and to identify regions of concern for structural integrity. Neutron diffraction measurements were also used to show the shear stresses near the base plate were significantly lower than normal stresses, an important assumption for the contour method because of the asymmetric cut.

Phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase as a metabolic valve advances Methylobacterium/Methylorubrum phyllosphere colonization and plant growth

The proficiency of phyllosphere microbiomes in efficiently utilizing plant-provided nutrients is pivotal for their successful colonization of plants. The methylotrophic capabilities of Methylobacterium/Methylorubrum play a crucial role in this process. However, the precise mechanisms facilitating efficient colonization remain elusive. In the present study, we investigate the significance of methanol assimilation in shaping the success of mutualistic relationships between methylotrophs and plants. A set of strains originating from Methylorubrum extorquens AM1 are subjected to evolutionary pressures to thrive under low methanol conditions. A mutation in the phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase gene is identified, which converts it into a metabolic valve. This valve redirects limited C1-carbon resources towards the synthesis of biomass by up-regulating a non-essential phosphoketolase pathway. These newly acquired bacterial traits demonstrate superior colonization capabilities, even at low abundance, leading to increased growth of inoculated plants. This function is prevalent in Methylobacterium/Methylorubrum strains. In summary, our findings offer insights that could guide the selection of Methylobacterium/Methylorubrum strains for advantageous agricultural applications.

Development of Engine Valve Materials for Next Generation Higher Efficiency Engines

The growing demand to increase the performance and efficiency of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty engines continues to drive increases in combustion intensities and cylinder pressures, which result in higher exhaust gas temperatures. Thus, there is a critical need for new materials that can meet the performance and cost targets for components such as exhaust valves which are exposed to these higher exhaust gas temperatures. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has developed several lower-cost, high-strength alloys that have the potential to be adopted into intake and/or exhaust valves in the next generation, high-efficiency engines and other high temperature applications. These alloys are covered by two issued patents.

The Effect of Spark-Plug Heat Dispersal Range and Exhaust Valve Opening Timing on Cold-Start Emissions and Cycle-to-Cycle Variability

The partnership for advancing combustion engines (PACE) is a US Department of Energy consortium involving multiple national laboratories and includes a goal of addressing key efficiency and emission barriers in light-duty engines fueled with a market-representative E10 gasoline. A major pillar of the initiative is the generation of detailed experimental data and modeling capabilities to understand and predict cold-start behavior. Cold-start, as defined by the time between first engine crank and three-way catalyst light-off, is responsible for a large percentage of NOx, unburned hydrocarbon and particulate matter emissions in light-duty engines. Minimizing emissions during cold-start is a trade-off between achieving faster light-off of the three-way catalyst and engine out emissions during that period. In this study, gaseous and soot emissions were measured at a distance representative of the three-way catalyst position downstream of the engine at a 2 bar net indicated mean effective pressure (NIMEP) steady-state operating condition representative of cold-start. The test matrix included sweeps of ignition timing 15 degrees-before to 10 degrees-after top dead center firing (TDCf) across three different spark-plug heat dispersal ranges (HR). Additionally, the effect of varying exhaust valve opening (EVO) timing on combustion stability and emissions was also studied. Results show that the spark plug HR affects the coefficient of variation (COV) of NIMEP under all cold-start conditions, while the impact on emissions was found to be minimal. At very retarded spark timings, colder spark plugs required higher air and fuel flow to maintain the desired 2bar NIMEP load, but the fraction of fuel energy going into the exhaust was found to be similar for all spark plugs. Finally, retarding exhaust valve timings showed a simultaneous reduction in emissions while increasing the fraction of fuel energy being fed into the exhaust. However, engine COV was also observed to increase with retarded exhaust timings.

Rotary valve controls multiple hydraulic leveling cylinders

Single rotary valve controls a circular bank of hydraulic leveling cylinders that must maintain large loads within plus or minus three arc minutes of the true vertical. Since the position of the valve spool determines the flow rate of each bank of cylinders and hence cylinder position, different flow rates may be obtained by changing the spool shape.
