Retrofitting a Fine-Pointing System to Satellite Optics

This paper describes a system added to an existing satellite-borne telescope design for the purpose of compensating the boresight errors that had been observed in earlier flights of similar instruments. Those errors had been found to be caused by thermal distortion of the spaceframe. This retrofit design was subjected to severe volume restrictions because it was fitted into an already tightly-packaged instrument envelope. It was found practical to improve the basic design by converting a redundant structure into a statically-determinate one. It was also possible to use portions of the mechanical actuation system to facilitate the position encoding needed for computer interfacing.

In-Situ Heat Rejection to the Martian Atmosphere

In order to provide in-situ heat rejection to the thin Martian atmosphere, approaches relying on forced convection and buoyancy flow are conceptualized. A convective radiator concept utilizing a fan to draw local atmosphere through an expanded metal foam heat exchanger panel is developed. To provide a pumped fluid loop interface, flow tubes are embedded in the heat exchanger panel and heat is transferred from the tubes to the foam via conduction and subsequently convectively to the environment. To forgo the use of a specialized high throughput fan, a concept utilizing a buoyant chimney tower to draw atmospheric flow through a low pressure drop heat exchanger is also considered. Both concepts may best align with moderate- to high-temperature heat loads that provide a significant delta temperature relative to the ambient atmosphere temperature. While eliminating dust accumulation on radiator surfaces, some type of serviceable filtration or screening may be required to prevent accumulation of dust inside the expanded metal foam heat exchanger for both concepts.

A turbine engine assembly includes a heat exchanger that is in thermal communication with an exhaust gas flow. A bypass passage is provided that is configured to selectively route at least a portion of the exhaust gas flow around the heat exchanger in response to a predefined engine operating condition.

Model Spread in Tropical Low Cloud Feedback Tied to Overturning Circulation Response to Warming

Among models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6), here we show that the magnitude of the tropical low cloud feedback, which contributes considerably to uncertainty in estimates of climate sensitivity, is intimately linked to tropical deep convection and its effects on the tropical atmospheric overturning circulation. First, a reduction in tropical ascent area and an increased frequency of heavy precipitation result in high cloud reduction and upper-tropospheric drying, which increases longwave cooling and reduces subsidence weakening, favoring low cloud reduction (Radiation-Subsidence Pathway). Second, increased longwave cooling decreases tropospheric stability, which also reduces subsidence weakening and low cloudiness (Stability-Subsidence Pathway). In summary, greater high cloud reduction and upper-tropospheric drying (negative longwave feedback) lead to a more positive cloud feedback among CMIP6 models by contributing to a greater reduction in low cloudiness (positive shortwave feedback). Varying strengths of the two pathways contribute considerably to the intermodel spread in climate sensitivity.
