Energy Augmentation for Vehicle Electric Systems (EAVES)

This preliminary study evaluated eight concepts for augmenting the energy state of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicles. Advanced Air Mobility electric vehicles could need additional charge due to depleted batteries (e.g., strong winds along the way) while approaching their destination. There are five direct charging and three indirect charging concepts presented in this paper. The concepts are in the preliminary research stage and are being refined. Considering the concepts are for the year 2045 timeframe, there is sufficient time to evolve them, along with the designs of these electric air vehicles. This Technical Memorandum describes more detail and provides a discussion on the desirability, viability, feasibility, and wickedness of these energy augmentation concepts. A discussion of barriers and initial investigation approach for the concepts is presented as well. One intent for the presentation of this Technical Memorandum is to capture the work done from March through September 2022 within NASA’s Convergent Aeronautics Solutions (CAS) Project, in the Transformative Aeronautics Concepts Program. At the end of the effort, it was decided that only one concept would be further investigated. The rest of the concepts for energy augmentation would be described in this document and could be picked up later if NASA chose to further investigate them. This document is a collection of input from the authors regarding the concepts they worked on. It is not intended to be a conference or journal publication, but a record of research conducted on the concepts considered by the Energy Augmentation for Vehicle Electric Systems (EAVES) team consisting of the authors. Mr. Todd Stinchfield was the Principal Investigator.

VTOL controls for shipboard operations

Piloted, moving-base simulations have been performed in the evaluation of several VTOL control system concepts during landings on a destroyer in adverse weather conditions. All the systems incorporated attitude control augmentation; most systems incorporated various types of translational control augmentation implemented either through aircraft attitude or, more directly, through the propulsion system (thrust magnitude and deflection). Only one of the control systems failed to provide satisfactory handling qualities in calm seas. Acceptable handling qualities in sea state 6 seem to require a system with control augmentation in all translational degrees of freedom.

An assessment of potential weather effects due to operation of the Space Orbiting Light Augmentation Reflector Energy System (SOLARES)

Implementation of SOLARES will input large quantities of heat continuously into a stationary location on the Earth's surface. The quantity of heat released by each of the SOlARES ground receivers, having a reflector orbit height of 6378 km, exceeds by 30 times that released by large power parks which were studied in detail. Using atmospheric models, estimates are presented for the local weather effects, the synoptic scale effects, and the global scale effects from such intense thermal radiation.

Introduction

The concept of land mobile service is reviewed. The conventional terrestrial mobile radio systems, including dispatch and radiotelephone are described. The more advanced cellular system is described, and the way it mitigate the many problems currently plaguing the conventional terrestrial mobile service are discussed. The concept of the Land Mobile Satellite Service is introduced. How a satellite system can augment the terrestrial system for a truly ubiquitous coverage is shown. The operation of a multiple beam satellite system is explained in terms of its similarities with the terrestrial cellular systems. The potential frequency spectrum availability for the LMSS in the United States is included.

Development of sensor augmented robotic weld systems for aerospace propulsion system fabrication

In order to meet stringent performance goals for power and reuseability, the Space Shuttle Main Engine was designed with many complex, difficult welded joints that provide maximum strength and minimum weight. To this end, the SSME requires 370 meters of welded joints. Automation of some welds has improved welding productivity significantly over manual welding. Application has previously been limited by accessibility constraints, requirements for complex process control, low production volumes, high part variability, and stringent quality requirements. Development of robots for welding in this application requires that a unique set of constraints be addressed. This paper shows how robotic welding can enhance production of aerospace components by addressing their specific requirements. A development program at the Marshall Space Flight Center combining industrial robots with state-of-the-art sensor systems and computer simulation is providing technology for the automation of welds in Space Shuttle Main Engine production.

Standard remote manipulator system docking target augmentation for automated docking

A docking target is provided for use in automated docking of a first vehicle on which the target is located. The target comprises a pair of laterally extending arm portions lying in substantially the same plane and a central post extending outwardly from the plane of the arm portions. At least three reflectors are located on the target. Two of the reflectors are located at the outboard ends of the arms portions and another reflector is located at the end of the central post. In an important embodiment, the reflectors comprise individual pieces of retroreflective tape. The reflectors, when viewed from the front of the target, are aligned along the longitudinal center line of the target, and can take a number of different shapes including circular or square.

Wireless augmented reality communication system

The system of the present invention is a highly integrated radio communication system with a multimedia co-processor which allows true two-way multimedia (video, audio, data) access as well as real-time biomedical monitoring in a pager-sized portable access unit. The system is integrated in a network structure including one or more general purpose nodes for providing a wireless-to-wired interface. The network architecture allows video, audio and data (including biomedical data) streams to be connected directly to external users and devices. The portable access units may also be mated to various non-personal devices such as cameras or environmental sensors for providing a method for setting up wireless sensor nets from which reported data may be accessed through the portable access unit. The reported data may alternatively be automatically logged at a remote computer for access and viewing through a portable access unit, including the user's own.

A remotely augmented vehicle approach to flight testing RPV control systems

A remotely augmented vehicle concept for flight testing advanced control systems was developed as an outgrowth of a remotely piloted research vehicle (RPV) program in which control laws are implemented through telemetry uplink and downlink data channels using a general purpose ground based digital computer which provides the control law computations. Some advantages of this approach are that the cost of one control system facility is spread over a number of RPV programs, and control laws can be changed quickly as required, without changing the flight hardware. The remotely augmented vehicle concept is described, and flight test results from a subscale F-15 program are discussed. Suggestions of how the concept could lead to more effective testing of RPV control system concepts, and how it is applicable to a military RPV reconnaissance mission are given.

A preliminary investigation of the use of throttles for emergency flight control

A preliminary investigation was conducted regarding the use of throttles for emergency flight control of a multiengine aircraft. Several airplanes including a light twin-engine piston-powered airplane, jet transports, and a high performance fighter were studied during flight and piloted simulations. Simulation studies used the B-720, B-727, MD-11, and F-15 aircraft. Flight studies used the Lear 24, Piper PA-30, and F-15 airplanes. Based on simulator and flight results, all the airplanes exhibited some control capability with throttles. With piloted simulators, landings using manual throttles-only control were extremely difficult. An augmented control system was developed that converts conventional pilot stick inputs into appropriate throttle commands. With the augmented system, the B-720 and F-15 simulations were evaluated and could be landed successfully. Flight and simulation data were compared for the F-15 airplane.

Preliminary Flight Results of a Fly-by-throttle Emergency Flight Control System on an F-15 Airplane

A multi-engine aircraft, with some or all of the flight control system inoperative, may use engine thrust for control. NASA Dryden has conducted a study of the capability and techniques for this emergency flight control method for the F-15 airplane. With an augmented control system, engine thrust, along with appropriate feedback parameters, is used to control flightpath and bank angle. Extensive simulation studies were followed by flight tests. The principles of throttles only control, the F-15 airplane, the augmented system, and the flight results including actual landings with throttles-only control are discussed.
