Development of PWHT-Free, Reduced Activation Creep-Strength Enhanced Bainitic Ferritic Steel for Large-Scale Fusion Reactor Components

A compositional modification has been proposed to validate an alloy design which potentially eliminates the requirement of post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) while preserving the advantage of mechanical properties in a reduced activation bainitic ferritic steel based on Fe-3Cr-3W-0.2V- 0.1Ta-Mn-Si-C, in weight percent, developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2007. The alloy design includes reducing the hardness in the as-welded condition for improving toughness, while increasing the hardenability for preserving the high-temperature mechanical performance such as creep-rupture resistance in the original steel. To achieve such a design, a composition range with a reduced C content combining with an increased Mn content has been proposed and investigated. Newly proposed “modified” steel successfully achieved an improved impact toughness in the as- welded condition, while the creep-rupture performance across the weldments without PWHT demonstrated ~50% improvement of the creep strength compared to that of the original steel weldment after PWHT. The obtained results strongly support the validity of the proposed alloy design.

Measuring dark neutrinos and light using external and internal components of LArTPCs

The so-called MiniBooNE low-energy excess has been a long-standing questionfor beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics in the neutrino field. The ShortBaseline Neutrino (SBN) program was proposed to investigate and provide furtherinsights into this excess. The SBN program utilises Liquid Argon Time ProjectionChamber (LArTPC) technology, which allows for precise measurements of neutrinointeractions and holds great potential for addressing significant open questions inthe field. Within the SBN program, the Short Baseline Near Detector (SBND) plays acrucial role as one of the near detector, positioned just 110 meters from the neutrinosource. Being located on the surface, SBND is exposed to cosmic-ray background, and to mitigate this, the Cosmic Ray Tagger (CRT) system has been implemented toidentify and veto cosmic background events, thereby enhancing the purity of neutrinointeractions. Additionally, the CRT system can be used to search for BSM signatures, such as the dark neutrinos, which have been proposed to explain the MiniBooNElow-energy excess. This thesis presents a novel approach for searching for darkneutrinos using existing SBND CRT data, collected with a unique setup called theCRT Beam Telescope. An extended model-independent search based on the darkneutrino analysis is also presented. The sensitivity plot for the CRT Beam Telescopeis compared with an estimated MiniBooNE exclusion limit. Furthermore, this thesiscovers the commissioning work conducted for the SBND CRT system, which is vitalfor ensuring optimal performance. The LArTPC technology also benefits from liquidargon’s excellent scintillation properties, producing abundant scintillation light. Thisthesis describes a method developed to understand the detector response to thescintillation light produced across the LArTPC, enhancing our understanding of thedetector’s performance and facilitating more accurate measurements.

BIM Interoperability Tool for Improving IFC-based Model Data Exchange Between Architectural Design and Structural Analysis for Linear Piping Components

There is a growing need in the AEC industry for the digitalization of model-based data exchange in BIM workflows. However, users continue to face difficulties exchanging data between BIM-based computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) software, even with the open, non-proprietary data exchange format called Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). Proposed solutions in academic research focus primarily on building systems, with comparatively little attention to piping models. Therefore, this paper introduces an interoperability tool for enabling piping model data exchange between architectural and structural analysis domains. The tool is tested using a piping model created in Autodesk Revit and shows marked improvement for IFC-based CAD-to-CAE interoperability over existing practice.

In-line, High-Throughput Quality Monitoring for Fuel Cell and Electrolyzer Components Based on Transmission and Reflection Imaging

During the manufacturing of fuel cell and electrolyzer membranes and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), real-time, in-line, high-throughput optical-based quality monitoring methods are essential for detecting defects and monitoring thickness variations, thus improving the performance and increasing the durability of fuel cell and electrolyzer in the hydrogen industry. For the MEAs with very opaque coatings, optical transmission-based imaging has been developed and applied in the Roll-to-Roll system using a flashlight and a high-sensitivity CCD camera. We observed high signal-to-noise ratio images while the Roll-to-Roll system ran at 5 ft/min. The entire sample image could quickly be recovered from the discrete frames using customized Python codes for automatic frame cropping and stitching. We detected significant non-uniformities in our experimental MEAs specimen. For fuel cell and low-temperature electrolysis (LTE) transparent membranes, we used optical reflectance hyperspectral imaging with interference fringe-based thickness mapping. We set up a hyperspectral camera to measure various rolls of commercial membranes. The measurement results are analyzed to find the thickness distribution of each roll and to check for defects. Transmission and reflection imaging-based quality monitoring techniques demonstrated in this project can be widely used in the mass production environment to improve the production yield and performance of hydrogen devices.
