Diode laser-pumped solid-state lasers

An evaluation is made of the consequences for solid-state lasers of novel diode laser-pumping technology. Diode laser-pumped neodymium lasers have operated at an electrical-to-optical efficiency of 10 percent in a single spatial mode, with linewidths of less than 10 kHz, and with a spectral power brightness sufficiently great to allow frequency extension by harmonic generation in nonlinear crystals; this has yielded green and blue sources of coherent radiation. Q-switched operation with kW peak powers and mode-locked operation with 10-picosec pulse widths have also been demonstrated. All-solid-state lasers at prices comparable to those of current flash-lamp-pumped laser systems are foreseen, as are power levels exceeding 1 kW, for coherent radar, global satellite sensing, and micromachining.

Diode laser-pumped solid-state lasers

Recently, interest in diode laser-pumped solid-state lasers has increased due to their advantages over flashlamp-pumped solid-state lasers. A historical overview is presented of semiconductor diode-pumped solid-state lasers beginning with work in the early 1960s and continuing through recent work on wavelength extension of these devices by laser operation on new transitions. Modeling of these devices by rate equations to obtain expressions for threshold, slope efficiency, and figures of merit is also given.

Spectroscopy and diode laser-pumped operation of Tm, Ho:YAG

Spectroscopic measurements and analysis of diode laser-pumped operation of Tm, Ho:YAG at 2.1 microns at room temperature have been performed. The peak effective stimulated emission cross section is measured to be 9 x 10-21 sq cm at 2.091 microns and the upper state lifetime is 8.5 ms. Under diode laser pumping, thresholds of 4.4 mW of absorbed power and slope efficiency of 19 percent have been demonstrated. Calculations of threshold power are performed based on the spectroscopic measurements. An energy transfer upconversion process is identified which leads to a sublinear rise in upper-state population with pump power.

Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As / Al(0.05)Ga(0.95)As light-emitting diodes on GaAs-coated Si substrates grown by liquid phase epitaxy

Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As/Al(0.05)Ga(0.95)As double-heterostructure light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were successfully grown for the first time by liquid phase epitaxy on a GaAs-coated Si substrate that was prepared by a sequential process of migration-enhanced epitaxy and molecular beam epitaxy. The edge-emitting LEDs had diode ideality factors of 1.54 at a forward-biased voltage higher than 0.9 V and external quantum efficiencies of 0.0033 W/A per facet. This efficiency is 50 times higher than the previously reported value, and is on the same order as that of AlGaAs homojunction LEDs fabricated on the GaAs substrates by liquid phase epitaxy.

High-power AlGaAs channeled substrate planar diode lasers for spaceborne communications

A high power channeled substrate planar AlGaAs diode laser with an emission wavelength of 8600 to 8800 A was developed. The optoelectronic behavior (power current, single spatial and spectral behavior, far field characteristics, modulation, and astigmatism properties) and results of computer modeling studies on the performance of the laser are discussed. Lifetest data on these devices at high output power levels is also included. In addition, a new type of channeled substrate planar laser utilizing a Bragg grating to stabilize the longitudinal mode was demonstrated. The fabrication procedures and optoelectronic properties of this new diode laser are described.

Optical Communication with Semiconductor Laser Diode

Theoretical and experimental performance limits of a free-space direct detection optical communication system were studied using a semiconductor laser diode as the optical transmitter and a silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) as the receiver photodetector. Optical systems using these components are under consideration as replacements for microwave satellite communication links. Optical pulse position modulation (PPM) was chosen as the signal format. An experimental system was constructed that used an aluminum gallium arsenide semiconductor laser diode as the transmitter and a silicon avalanche photodiode photodetector. The system used Q=4 PPM signaling at a source data rate of 25 megabits per second. The PPM signal format requires regeneration of PPM slot clock and word clock waveforms in the receiver. A nearly exact computational procedure was developed to compute receiver bit error rate without using the Gaussion approximation. A transition detector slot clock recovery system using a phase lock loop was developed and implemented. A novel word clock recovery system was also developed. It was found that the results of the nearly exact computational procedure agreed well with actual measurements of receiver performance. The receiver sensitivity achieved was the closest to the quantum limit yet reported for an optical communication system of this type.

High-peak-power low-threshold AlGaAs/GaAs stripe laser diodes on Si substrates grown by migration-enhanced molecular beam epitaxy

A high-peak-power low-threshold AlGaAs/GaAs double-heterostructure stripe laser diode on Si substrats, grown by hybrid migration-enhanced molecular beam epitaxy (MEMBE) and metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) has been demonstrated for the first time. These devices showed the highest peak powers of up to 184 mW per facet reported so far for double-heterostructure stripe laser diodes on Si substrates, room-temperature pulsed threshold currents as low as 150 mA, and differential quantum efficiencies as high as 30 percent without mirror facet coating. An intrinsic threshold current density has been estimated to be about 2 kA/sq cm when taking current spreading and lateral diffusion effects into account. Low dislocation density shows that MEMBE can be a useful method to grow high-quality GaAs and AlGaAs/GaAs layers on Si substrates by combining with MOCVD.

Tunable diode laser measurements of HO2NO2 absorption coefficients near 12.5 microns

A tunable diode laser spectrometer has been used to measure absorption coefficients of peroxynitric acid (HO2NO2) near the 803/cm Q branch. HO2NO2 concentrations in a low-pressure flowing gas mixture were determined from chemical titration procedures and UV absorption spectroscopy. The diode laser measured absorption coefficients, at a spectral resolution of better than 0.001/cm, are about 10 percent larger than previous Fourier transform infrared measurements made at a spectral resolution of 0.06/cm.

Monitoring of catalyst performance in CO2 lasers using frequency modulation spectroscopy with diode lasers

Closed-cycle CO2 laser operation with removal of O2 and regeneration of CO2 can be achieved by catalytic CO-O2 recombination. Both parametric studies of the optimum catalyst formulation and long-term performance tests require on line monitoring of CO, O2 and CO2 concentrations. There are several existing methods for molecular oxygen detection. These methods are either intrusive (such as electrochemical method or mass spectrometry) or very expensive (such as CARS, UV laser absorption). Researchers demonstrated a high-sensitivity spectroscopic measurement of O2 using the two-tone frequency modulation spectroscopy (FMS) technique with a near infrared GaAlAs diode laser. Besides its inexpensive cost, fast response time, nonintrusive measurements and high sensitivity, this technique may also be used to differentiate between isotopes due to its high spectroscopic resolution. This frequency modulation spectroscopy technique could also be applied for the on-line monitoring of CO and CO2 using InGaAsP diode lasers operation in the 1.55 microns region and H2O in the 1.3 microns region. The existence of single mode optical fibers at the near infrared region makes it possible to combine FMS with optical fiber technology. Optical fiber FMS is particularly suitable for making point-measurements at one or more locations in the CO2 laser/catalyst system.

High resolution infrared spectroscopy of planetary molecules using diode lasers and Fourier transform spectrometers

Modern observations of infrared molecular lines in planets are performed at spectral resolutions which are as high as those available in the laboratory. Analysis of such data requires laboratory measurements at the highest possible resolution, which also yield accurate line positions and intensities. For planetary purposes the spectrometer must be coupled to sample cells which can be reduced in temperature and varied in pressure. An approach which produces the full range of required molecular line parameters uses a combination of tunable diode lasers and Fourier transform spectrometers (FTS). The FTS provides board spectral coverage and good calibration accuracy, while the diode laser can be used to study those regions which are not resolved by the FTS.

Linear laser diode arrays for improvement in optical disk recording for space stations

The design and fabrication of individually addressable laser diode arrays for high performance magneto-optic recording systems are presented. Ten diode arrays with 30 mW cW light output, linear light vs. current characteristics and single longitudinal mode spectrum were fabricated using channel substrate planar (CSP) structures. Preliminary results on the inverse CSP structure, whose fabrication is less critically dependent on device parameters than the CSP, are also presented. The impact of systems parameters and requirements, in particular, the effect of feedback on laser design is assessed, and techniques to reduce feedback or minimize its effect on systems performance, including mode-stabilized structures, are evaluated.

Tunable diode laser IR spectrometer for in situ measurements of the gas phase composition and particle size distribution of Titan's atmosphere

A new instrument, the Probe Infrared Laser Spectrometer (PIRLS), is described for in situ sensing of the gas composition and particle size distribution of Titan's atmosphere on the NASA/ESA Cassini mission. For gas composition measurements, several narrow-band (0.0001/cm) tunable lead-salt diode lasers operating near 80 K at selected mid-IR wavelengths are directed over a path length defined by a small reflector extending over the edge of the probe spacecraft platform; volume mixing ratios of 10 to the -9th should be measurable for several species of interest. A cloud-particle-size spectrometer using a diode laser source at 780 nm shares the optical path and deployed reflector; a combination of imaging and light scattering techniques is used to determine sizes of haze and cloud particles and their number density as a function of altitude.

Computer processing of tunable diode laser spectra

A computer-controlled tunable diode laser spectrometer and spectral analysis software are described. The three-channel system records simultaneously the transmission of a subject gas, a temperature-stabilized etalon, and a calibration gas. The software routines are applied to diode laser spectra of HNO3 and NO2 to illustrate the procedures adopted for conversion of raw spectral data to useful transmission and harmonic spectra. Extraction of line positions, absorption intensities, collisional broadening coefficients, and gas concentrations from recorded spectra is also described.
