Pressure stability in explicitly coupled simulations of poromechanics with application to CO 2 sequestration

We study in detail the pressure stabilizing effects of the non-iterated fixed-stress splitting in poromechanical problems which are nearly undrained and incompressible. When applied in conjunction with a spatial discretization which does not satisfy the discrete inf–sup condition, namely a mixed piecewise linear–piecewise constant spatial discretization, the explicit fixed-stress scheme can have a pressure stabilizing effect in transient problems. This effect disappears, however, upon time step refinement or the attainment of steady state. The interpretation of the scheme as an Augmented Lagrangian method similar to Uzawa iteration for incompressible flow helps explain these results. Moreover, due to the slowly evolving solution within undrained seal regions, we show that the explicit fixed-stress scheme requires very large time steps to reveal its pressure stabilizing effect in examples of geologic CO 2 sequestration. We note that large time steps can result in large errors in drained regions, such as the aquifer or reservoir regions of these examples, and can prevent convergence of nonlinear solvers in the case of multiphase flows, which can make the explicit scheme an unreliable source of pressure stabilization. We conclude by demonstrating that pressure jump stabilization is as effective in the explicit fixed-stress setting as in the fully implicit setting for undrained problems, while maintaining the stability and convergence of the fixed-stress split for drained problems.

Conformal symmetries for extremal black holes with general asymptotic scalars in STU supergravity

We present a construction of the most general BPS black holes of STU supergravity (N = 2 supersymmetric D = 4 supergravity coupled to three vector super-multiplets) with arbitrary asymptotic values of the scalar fields. These solutions are obtained by acting with a subset of the global symmetry generators on STU BPS black holes with zero values of the asymptotic scalars, both in the U-duality and the heterotic frame. The solutions are parameterized by fourteen parameters: four electric and four magnetic charges, and the asymptotic values of the six scalar fields. We also present BPS black hole solutions of a consistently truncated STU supergravity, which are parameterized by two electric and two magnetic charges and two scalar fields. These latter solutions are significantly simplified, and are very suitable for further explicit studies. We also explore a conformal inversion symmetry of the Couch-Torrence type, which maps any member of the fourteen-parameter family of BPS black holes to another member of the family. Furthermore, these solutions are expected to be valuable in the studies of various swampland conjectures in the moduli space of string compactifications.

A Solution Adaptive Structured/Unstructured Overset Grid Flow Solver with Applications to Helicopter Rotor Flows

This paper summarizes a method that solves both the three dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations and the Euler equations using overset structured and solution adaptive unstructured grids with applications to helicopter rotor flowfields. The overset structured grids use an implicit finite-difference method to solve the thin-layer Navier-Stokes/Euler equations while the unstructured grid uses an explicit finite-volume method to solve the Euler equations. Solutions on a helicopter rotor in hover show the ability to accurately convect the rotor wake. However, isotropic subdivision of the tetrahedral mesh rapidly increases the overall problem size.

Linearizing the BPS equations with vector and tensor multiplets

We analyse the BPS equations of N = (1, 0) supergravity theory in six dimensions coupled to a vector and tensor multiplet. We show how these BPS equations can be reduced to a set of linear differential equations. This system is triangular in that each layer of equations, while linear, is quadratically sourced by the solutions of the previous layers. We examine several explicit examples and discuss the construction of new families of microstate geometries. We expect that the result presented here will open up new branches of superstrata in which the momentum is encoded in a new class of charge carriers.

Analytic Binary Alloy Volume–Concentration Relations and the Deviation from Zen’s Law

Alloys expand or contract as concentrations change, and the resulting relationship between atomic volume and alloy content is an important property of the solid. While a well-known approximation posits that the atomic volume varies linearly with concentration (Zen’s law), the actual variation is more complicated. Here we use the apparent size of the solute (solvent) atom and the elasticity to derive explicit analytical expressions for the atomic volume of binary solid alloys. Two approximations, continuum and terminal, are proposed. Deviations from Zen’s law are studied for 22 binary alloy systems.

Partial implicitization

The steady-state solution to the full Navier-Stokes equations for complicated flows is generally difficult to obtain. The Burgers (1948) equation is used as a model of the Navier-Stokes equations. The steady-state solution is obtained by a one-step explicit technique resulting from a partial implicitization of the difference equation. Stability analysis shows that the technique is unconditionally stable, and numerical tests show the technique to be accurate.

Effectiveness of basic display augmentation in vehicular control by visual field cues

The paper investigates the effectiveness of different basic display augmentation concepts - fixed reticle, velocity vector, and predicted future vehicle path - for RPVs controlled by a vehicle-mounted TV camera. The task is lateral manual control of a low flying RPV along a straight reference line in the presence of random side gusts. The man-machine system and the visual interface are modeled as a linear time-invariant system. Minimization of a quadratic performance criterion is assumed to underlie the control strategy of a well-trained human operator. The solution for the optimal feedback matrix enables the explicit computation of the variances of lateral deviation and directional error of the vehicle and of the control force that are used as performance measures.

Generalized Dufort-Frankel spectral methods

An explicit time-advancing scheme for the spectral solution of parabolic equations is presented. Several two-dimensional examples are considered, including convection-diffusion and nonlinear problems, under various boundary conditions. Numerical evidence demonstrates the efficiency and accuracy of the spectral approach.

Shape of solitons in classically forbidden states - 'Lorentz expansion'

The shape of extended objects in classically forbidden regions is shown to undergo expansion analogous to Lorentz contraction of a relativistic body of finite velocities. The problem of two interacting Dirac particles moving in one dimension is solved explicitly and the results are generalized to soliton solutions of field theories. An estimate of the effect on tunneling rates is also given, including solitons in (CH)z.

Purely cubic action for string field theory

It is shown that Witten's (1986) open-bosonic-string field-theory action and a closed-string analog can be written as a purely cubic interaction term. The conventional form of the action arises by expansion around particular solutions of the classical equations of motion. The explicit background dependence of the conventional action via the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin operator is eliminated in the cubic formulation. A closed-form expression is found for the full nonlinear gauge-transformation law.

Transient two-dimensional heat transfer through a composite body with application to deicing of aircraft components

Nine different numerical methods are examined for their ability to model the process of the melting and removal of ice from an airfoil using electrothermal heaters. A technique is presented for modeling the phase change which assumes a phase for each node. The technique allows solvers such as Alternating Direction Implicit, Alternating Direction Explicit, and Strongly Implicit Procedure to find a solution which can then be iterated to find the correct phase of each node. Comparisons made for a standard deicer pad comprised of five layers showed the ADI method to be superior to the other methods considered.

Global properties of pseudospectral methods

The present application of polynomial interpolation methods to function-approximation and numerical solutions for hyperbolic and elliptic PDEs allows the explicit construction of the derivative matrix for a general sequence of collocation points. An evaluation of the effect of several factors on the performance of these methods indicates an inability to interpret global methods in terms of local ones; the accuracy of the approximation will differ when the function's large gradients occur near the center of the region or near the boundary, irrespective of the boundary vicinity's collocation-point density.

The consistent comparison problem in N-version software

The authors have identified a difficulty in the implementation of N-version programming. The problem, called the consistent comparison problem, arises for applications in which decisions are based on the results of comparing finite-precision numbers. It is shown that when versions make comparisons involving the results of finite-precision calculations, it is impossible to guarantee the consistency of their results. It is therefore possible that correct versions may arrive at completely different outputs for an application that does not apparently have multiple correct solutions. If this problem is not dealt with explicitly, an N-version system may be unable to reach consensus even when none of its component versions falls.

A novel design for a hybrid space manipulator

Described are the structural design, kinematics, and characteristics of a robot manipulator for space applications and use as an articulate and powerful space shuttle manipulator. Hybrid manipulators are parallel-serial connection robots that give rise to a multitude of highly precise robot manipulators. These manipulators are modular and can be extended by additional modules over large distances. Every module has a hemispherical work space and collective modules give rise to highly dexterous symmetrical work space. Some basic designs and kinematic structures of these robot manipulators are discussed, the associated direct and inverse kinematics formulations are presented, and solutions to the inverse kinematic problem are obtained explicitly and elaborated upon. These robot manipulators are shown to have a strength-to-weight ratio that is many times larger than the value that is currently available with industrial or research manipulators. This is due to the fact that these hybrid manipulators are stress-compensated and have an ultralight weight, yet, they are extremely stiff due to the fact that force distribution in their structure is mostly axial. Actuation is prismatic and can be provided by ball screws for maximum precision.

Implicit methods for the Navier-Stokes equations

Numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations using explicit schemes can be obtained at the expense of efficiency. Conventional implicit methods which often achieve fast convergence rates suffer high cost per iteration. A new implicit scheme based on lower-upper factorization and symmetric Gauss-Seidel relaxation offers very low cost per iteration as well as fast convergence. High efficiency is achieved by accomplishing the complete vectorizability of the algorithm on oblique planes of sweep in three dimensions.

Multiresolution and Explicit Methods for Vector Field Analysis and Visualization

We first report on our current progress in the area of explicit methods for tangent curve computation. The basic idea of this method is to decompose the domain into a collection of triangles (or tetrahedra) and assume linear variation of the vector field over each cell. With this assumption, the equations which define a tangent curve become a system of linear, constant coefficient ODE's which can be solved explicitly. There are five different representation of the solution depending on the eigenvalues of the Jacobian. The analysis of these five cases is somewhat similar to the phase plane analysis often associate with critical point classification within the context of topological methods, but it is not exactly the same. There are some critical differences. Moving from one cell to the next as a tangent curve is tracked, requires the computation of the exit point which is an intersection of the solution of the constant coefficient ODE and the edge of a triangle. There are two possible approaches to this root computation problem. We can express the tangent curve into parametric form and substitute into an implicit form for the edge or we can express the edge in parametric form and substitute in an implicit form of the tangent curve. Normally the solution of a system of ODE's is given in parametric form and so the first approach is the most accessible and straightforward. The second approach requires the 'implicitization' of these parametric curves. The implicitization of parametric curves can often be rather difficult, but in this case we have been successful and have been able to develop algorithms and subsequent computer programs for both approaches. We will give these details along with some comparisons in a forthcoming research paper on this topic.
