Solar house system interfaced with the power utility grid

Photovoltaic cells may be used to convert sunlight directly into electrical energy and into low-grade heat to be used for large scale terrestrial solar energy conversion. Both forms of energy can be utilized if such cells are deployed in close proximity to the consumer (rooftop). CdS/Cu2S solar cells are an example of cells which may be produced inexpensively enough to become economically attractive. Cell parameters relevant for combined solar conversion are presented. Critical issues, such as production yield, life expectancy, stability of performance, are discussed. Systems design parameters related to operating temperatures are analyzed. First results obtained on Solar One, the experimental solar house of the University of Delaware, are given. Economic aspects are discussed.

Tug payload interfaces

Some conclusions reached during the IUS/Tug payload requirements compatibility study are presented. This study is concerned with all prospective Tug-payload interfaces, including detailed analysis of low-earth orbit, geosynchronous, and interplanetary missions. Tug payload requirements are discussed and summarized as to operational requirements, structural/mechanical interface, avionics interfaces, fluids interface, and environment. The shuttle impacts created by Tug/payload interfaces are examined and presented in tabular form. Major conclusions are that all payloads in the mission model can be suitably and inexpensively accommodated by the Tug and the Shuttle if standardized integration equipment is employed, that multiple payloads pose no significant integration challenge, and that a relatively small inventory of integration equipment is required to support all prospective payloads.

ATS-6 - Description and performance

The Applications Technology Satellite-6 embodies a geosynchronous technology that is sensitive enough to receive signals from simple inexpensive earth-based terminals and is powerful enough to relay color television and other high-quality signals to these terminals. This was accomplished by deploying a 9.1-m parabolic reflector antenna in space, by performing precision attitude maneuvers on commands from the earth to point the reflector to selected spots on the earth's surface, and by providing communications links and necessary power to receive and rebroadcast signals transmitted from the ground. All major objectives of the ATS program have been satisfied, with specifications being met or exceeded.

Building a computer-aided design capability using a standard time share operating system

The paper describes how an integrated system of engineering computer programs can be built using a standard commercially available operating system. The discussion opens with an outline of the auxiliary functions that an operating system can perform for a team of engineers involved in a large and complex task. An example of a specific integrated system is provided to explain how the standard operating system features can be used to organize the programs into a simple and inexpensive but effective system. Applications to an aircraft structural design study are discussed to illustrate the use of an integrated system as a flexible and efficient engineering tool. The discussion concludes with an engineer's assessment of an operating system's capabilities and desirable improvements.

A study of the toxicology of pyrolysis gases from synthetic polymers

An apparatus and procedure for evaluating the toxicity of pyrolysis gases from synthetic polymers are described. In each test, four Swiss albino mice are exposed in a 5-liter chamber to the gases from materials pyrolyzed at 700 C. The apparatus is simple in design, easy to clean, inexpensive and gives reproducible results. Data on several fluorine-containing and polyamide polymers are presented.

Long-duration exposure facility - A new capability for space testing and basic research

The reusable Long-Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), which can accommodate experiments requiring large exposure surface areas, large volumes and/or massive hardware, offers to researchers a new inexpensive opportunity to conduct extended technology and basic research testing in the space environment. Many researchers with interest varying from medical research to astrophysics research will have their experiments performed in the 80 large experiment trays on the first LDEF flight. This paper describes the LDEF and a number of experiments now being developed for the first mission. In particular, this paper illustrates the value of the LDEF features which allow the return of the experiment hardware and repeated flights.

Optical proximity detector

Sensitive, relatively inexpensive instrument uses phase-detection techniques to sense presence of objects. Phase-sensitive detectors, LED, photodiode with response matched to LED output, and filtering lens allow detector to operate over narrow radiation band, giving selectivity over stray light.

Field-of-view divider

Relatively-inexpensive mirror system splits output scene of single optical probe into three separate parts. System entirely eliminates point-by-point replication, alinement, and registration of multiple-model board assemblies.

Improving efficiency of existing air-conditioning

Inexpensive duct work changes improves hot-and-cold deck air conditioning units. Energy cost of reheating cooled air can be eliminated by tying all cold air decks to one air-conditioning unit and all hot decks to another. Resultant energy savings are easily possible with two or more units.

Heavy-duty sandblast nozzle

Inexpensive sialon (silicon/aluminum/oxygen/nitrogen) nozzle liner resists abrasion and is strong at high temperatures.

Save power in AC induction motors

Relatively simple and inexpensive circuitry improves power factor and reduces power dissipation in induction motors operating below full load. Electronic control loop conserves energy by reducing voltage applied to lightly loaded motor. Circuit forces motor to run at constant predetermined optimum power factor, regardless of load or line voltage variations. Solid-state switch varies voltage.

Radioactive-gas separation technique

Cryogenic technique recovers gases inexpensively. Method uses differences in vapor pressures, melting points, and boiling points of components in gaseous mixture. Series of temperature and pressure variations converts gases independently to solid and liquid states, thereby simplifying separation. Apparatus uses readily available cryogen and does not require expensive refrigeration equipment.

Cartridge getter for vacuum jacketing

Inexpensively-manufactured getter cartridge save users time in vacuum system maintenance and allows almost anyone to carry out replacement procedure that formerly required skilled welder. Cartridge screws into port in outer wall of vacuum jacket. Getter is replaced by simply unscrewing cartridge rather than cutting and rewelding.

Fuel injector for jet-stirred combustors

Simple and inexpensive method of making quartz injectors yields injectors of superior characteristics. Quartz injector is fabricated by heating quartz rod and blowing and forming sphere on end. As with metal injectors, orifices are then drilled in spherical shell. Time required to form quartz is only 0.5 man-hour and 7.5 man-hours are required to drill holes. Total time of fabrication, 8 man-hours, is fraction of 40 man-hours required to complete metal injector. Success with technique and material is such that further substitutions for other related components are being contemplated.
