Introduction to Digital Image Correlation (DIC) with annotated bibliography

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is “a non-contact means of measuring motion and deformation using digital images of the object of interest”, capable of full-field measurements over large areas. Getting started in DIC can be difficult, since there are many different techniques, and the body of literature on DIC is extensive. IEEE Xplore alone lists nearly 11,000 references, including magazines, conference proceedings, journal articles, books, etc. A Google search returns around 145 million results. The intent of this annotated bibliography is to provide an entry point for beginners and to collect references that may be useful to more advanced practitioners.

Energy to Communities Program Short Introduction: Evaluation of Enhanced Geothermal System for Cornell District Heating [Slides]

Through the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy to Communities (E2C) program, NLR, other national laboratory experts, and select organizations provide Expert Match - free, short-term technical assistance to address near-term energy challenges and questions. Expert Match is for community stakeholders who have decision-making power or influence in their community but need access to additional energy expertise to inform key upcoming decisions. This Expert Match request supported Cornell University (Itaca, NY) community efforts in developing Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) reservoir performance, by simulating fracture flow to estimate pressure drop, flow distribution, and heat extraction efficiency in fractured rock. Thermal drawdown modeling was used to assess long-term resource sustainability, while system optimization studies refined key parameters such as well configuration and flow rate to improve overall reservoir efficiency.

An Introduction to Variational Calculus

Variational Calculus is an advanced topic in mathematics. This document exists to compile the basics of Variational Calculus in a readable and digestible manner for application by engineers. This document is a living document and will be updated as time moves forward. It is the hope that by reading this document, the basics of Variational Calculus can be readily applied to any system/function of interest. This does not serve as a replacement for textbooks or other learned sources but should act as a companion piece to better serve the reader in times of confusion and distress.

Introduction to the Demonstration of Pyroshock Response Prediction Methods Using NASA ShockSat Data Virtual Collection

Mechanical shocks, particularly pyroshocks, are environments that all spacecraft and launch vehicles experience. Pyroshocks can be challenging design environments for space hardware because these events are often high frequency, high intensity transients. Furthermore, since design decisions must be made relatively early in the design phase, understanding, and accurately defining pyroshock excitation and the loads that it imparts on components is important to ensure the high reliability required of spacecraft and rockets. Here, general guidelines about shock transmission through spacecraft structures are provided in NASA and MIL handbooks and standards, but these are relatively broad guidelines, and recent studies have shown that more accurate and less-conservative predictions are needed. However, predicting shock response accurately is still a challenge because of the high frequencies in a pyroshock excitation.

Introduction to Metadata and Ontologies: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Metadata and Ontologies (But Were Afraid to Ask)

Metadata are contextual data about your experimental data. Metadata are the who, what, when, where, and why of these data. Metadata puts these data into context. In microbiome research, metadata includes information about the sample: when it was collected, where it was collected from, what kind of sample it is, and what were the properties of the environment or experimental condition from which the sample was taken. Information about sample processing is also metadata: methods used to extract and purify molecules (e.g., DNA) from the sample, type of DNA sequencing or other ’omics analyses done, and where the raw experimental data are located. This documentation includes information on the following topics: What are metadata? What kinds of metadata are there? Why are metadata important? Why should metadata be standardized? Why should metadata be machine readable? What is an ontology? Why are ontologies important? What are some examples of ontologies? The documentation also includes further resources on metadata guides and tools and tips for formatting metadata for maximum utility.
