Anomalous magnetothermoelectric behavior in massive Dirac materials

Extensive studies of electron transport in Dirac materials have shown positive magnetoresistance (MR) and positive magnetothermopower (MTP) in a magnetic field perpendicular to the excitation current or thermal gradient. In contrast, measurements of electron transport often show a negative longitudinal MR and negative MTP for a magnetic field oriented along the excitation current or thermal gradient; this is attributed to the chiral anomaly in Dirac materials. In this paper, we report a very different magnetothermoelectric transport behavior in the massive Dirac material ZrTe5. Although thin flakes show a commonly observed positive MR in a perpendicular magnetic field, distinct from other Dirac materials, we observe a sharp negative MTP. In a parallel magnetic field, we still observe a negative longitudinal MR, however, a remarkable positive MTP is observed for the fields parallel to the thermal gradients. Our theoretical calculations suggest that this anomalous magnetothermoelectric behavior can be attributed to the screened Coulomb scattering. This work demonstrates the significance of impurity scattering in the electron transport of topological materials and provides deep insight into the magnetotransport phenomena in Dirac materials.

Breakdown of the drift-diffusion model for transverse spin transport in a disordered Pt film

Spin-accumulation and spin-current profiles are calculated for a disordered Pt film subjected to an in-plane electric current within the nonequilibrium Green's function approach. In the bulklike region of the sample, this approach captures the intrinsic spin Hall effect found in other calculations. Near the surfaces, the results reveal qualitative differences with the results of the widely used spin-diffusion model, even when the boundary conditions are modified to try to account for them. One difference is that the effective spin-diffusion length for transverse spin transport is significantly different from its longitudinal counterpart and is instead similar to the mean-free path. Furthermore, this feature may be generic for spin currents generated via the intrinsic spin Hall mechanism because of the differences in transport mechanisms compared to longitudinal spin transport. Orbital accumulation in the Pt film is only significant in the immediate vicinity of the surfaces and has a small component penetrating into the bulk only in the presence of spin-orbit coupling, as a secondary effect induced by the spin accumulation.

$μ$ $\mathrm{SR}$ study of the dipole-octupole quantum spin ice candidate $\mathrm{Ce_2Zr_2O_7}$

The Ce 3+ pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom in Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 possess both dipolar and octupolar character which enables the possibility of novel quantum spin liquid ground states in this material. In this study, we report muon spin relaxation and rotation (μSR) measurements on single-crystal samples of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 in zero magnetic field and in magnetic fields directed along the [1, $\overline{1}$, 0] and [1, 1, 1] crystallographic directions, and for magnetic fields directed both longitudinal and transverse to the direction of muon polarization. Our zero-field results show no signs of magnetic ordering or spin freezing, consistent with earlier zero-field μSR measurements on a powder sample of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 , and also with the expectations for a quantum spin ice. However, we measure a more gentle relaxation rate for Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 in zero field at low temperatures than was previously reported. This difference in relaxation rate is likely due to the low oxidation and, correspondingly, the high stoichiometry of our singlecrystal samples. Longitudinal field measurements confirm that the magnetic dipole moments in Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 remain dynamic at T = 0.1 K on the microsecond timescale. For both [1, $\overline{1}$, 0] and [1, 1, 1] magnetic fields, our μSR Knight shift measurements show a field-induced leveling off of the magnetic susceptibility at low temperature which is qualitatively consistent with corresponding calculations using the numerical-linked-cluster method in combination with recent estimates for the nearest-neighbor exchange parameters of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 .

Two-particle transverse momentum correlations in p p and p -Pb collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Two-particle transverse momentum differential correlators, recently measured in Pb-Pb collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), provide an additional tool to gain insights into particle production mechanisms and infer transport properties, such as the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, of the medium created in Pb-Pb collisions. The longitudinal long-range correlations and the large azimuthal anisotropy measured at low transverse momenta in small collision systems, namely pp and p-Pb, at LHC energies resemble manifestations of collective behavior. This suggests that locally equilibrated matter may be produced in these small collision systems, similar to what is observed in Pb-Pb collisions. In this work, the same two-particle transverse momentum differential correlators are exploited in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, respectively, to seek evidence for viscous effects. Specifically, the strength and shape of the correlators are studied as a function of the produced particle multiplicity to identify evidence for longitudinal broadening that might reveal the presence of viscous effects in these smaller systems. The measured correlators and their evolution from pp and p-Pb to Pb-Pb collisions are additionally compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators, and the potential presence of viscous effects is discussed.

Vortex rings in event-by-event relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We present event-by-event simulations for central asymmetric light+heavy and Au +Au collisions to investigate the formation and evolution of vortex-ring structures in the longitudinal flow velocity profile. The production-plane polarization of Λ hyperons, defined with respect to the Λ momentum and the beam, can track the “vortex-ring” feature in the event, a characteristic vortical structure generated by longitudinal flow gradients. We make comprehensive model predictions for the rapidity-dependent vortex-ring observables for different collision system sizes at √s NN = 200 and 72 GeV. Furthermore, our predictions at the latter energy can be explored in the future LHCb fixed-target experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.

Measurement of the nucleon spin structure functions for 0.01 < 𝑄 2 < 1 GeV 2 using CLAS

The spin structure functions of the proton and the deuteron were measured during the EG4 experiment at Jefferson Lab in 2006. Data were collected for longitudinally polarized electron scattering off longitudinally polarized NH 3 and ND 3 targets, for 𝑄 2 values as small as 0.012 and 0.02 GeV 2 , respectively, using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. This is the archival paper of the EG4 experiment that summarizes the previously reported results of the polarized structure functions 𝑔 1 , 𝐴 1 ⁢𝐹 1 , and their moments $\bar{Γ}$ 1 , $\bar{𝛾}$ 0 , and $\bar{𝐼}$ TT , for both the proton and the deuteron. In addition, we report on new results on the neutron 𝑔 1 extracted by combining proton and deuteron data and correcting for Fermi smearing, and on the neutron moments $\bar{Γ}$ 1 , $\bar{𝛾}$ 0 , and $\bar{𝐼}$ TT formed directly from those of the proton and the deuteron. Our data are in good agreement with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for the proton, deuteron, and neutron. Furthermore, the isovector combination was formed for 𝑔 1 and the Bjorken integral $\bar{Γ}^{𝑝−𝑛}_1$, and it was compared to available theoretical predictions. All of our results, to the best of our knowledge, provide for the first time extensive tests of spin observable predictions from chiral effective field theory (𝜒⁢EFT) in a 𝑄 2 range commensurate with the pion mass. Finally, they motivate further improvement in 𝜒⁢EFT calculations from other approaches such as the lattice gauge method.

Ultrarelativistic quark-nucleus scattering in a light-front Hamiltonian approach

In this work, we investigate the scattering of a quark on a heavy nucleus at high energies using the time-dependent basis light-front quantization (tBLFQ) formalism, which is the first application of the tBLFQ formalism in QCD. We present the real-time evolution of the quark wave function in a strong classical color field of the relativistic nucleus, described as the color glass condensate. The quark and the nucleus color field are simulated in the QCD SU(3) color space. We calculate the total and the differential cross sections, and the quark distribution in coordinate and color spaces using the tBLFQ approach. We recover the eikonal cross sections in the eikonal limit. We find that the differential cross section from the tBLFQ simulation is in agreement with a perturbative calculation at large $p_⊥$, and it deviates from the perturbative calculation at small $p_⊥$ due to higher-order contributions. In particular, we relax the eikonal limit by letting the quark carry realistic finite longitudinal momenta. We study the sub-eikonal effect on the quark through the transverse coordinate distribution of the quark with different longitudinal momentum, and we find the sub-eikonal effect to be sizable. Our results can significantly reduce the theoretical uncertainties in small $p_⊥$ region which has important implications to the phenomenology of the hadron-nucleus and deep inelastic scattering at high energies.

Axion helioscopes as solar magnetometers

Axion helioscopes search for solar axions and axionlike particles via inverse Primakoff conversion in strong laboratory magnets pointed at the Sun. Anticipating the detection of solar axions, in this work, we determine the potential for the planned next-generation helioscope, the International Axion Observatory (IAXO), to measure or constrain the solar magnetic field. To do this we consider a previously neglected component of the solar axion flux at sub-keV energies arising from the conversion of longitudinal plasmons. This flux is sensitively dependent to the magnetic field profile of the Sun, with lower energies corresponding to axions converting into photons at larger solar radii. If the detector technology eventually installed in IAXO has an energy resolution better than 200 eV, then solar axions could become an even more powerful messenger than neutrinos of the magnetic field in the core of the Sun. For energy resolutions better than 10 eV, IAXO could access the inner 70% of the Sun and begin to constrain the field at the tachocline: the boundary between the radiative and convective zones. The longitudinal plasmon flux from a toroidal magnetic field also has an additional 2% geometric modulation effect which could be used to measure the angular dependence of the magnetic field.

Effective field theory of Stückelberg vector bosons

We explore the effective field theory of a vector field $X^μ$ that has a Stückelberg mass. The absence of a gauge symmetry for $X^μ$ implies Lorentz-invariant operators are constructed directly from Xμ. Beyond the kinetic and mass terms, allowed interactions at the renormalizable level include $X_μX^μH^†H, (X_μX^μ)^2$, and $X_μj^μ$, where $j^μ$ is a global current of the SM or of a hidden sector. We show that all of these interactions lead to scattering amplitudes that grow with powers of $\sqrt{s}/m_X$, except for the case of $X_μj^μ$ where $j^μ$ is a nonanomalous global current. The latter is well-known when $\textit{X}$ is identified as a dark photon coupled to the electromagnetic current, often written equivalently as kinetic mixing between $\textit{X}$ and the photon. The power counting for the energy growth of the scattering amplitudes is facilitated by isolating the longitudinal enhancement. We examine in detail the interaction with an anomalous global vector current $X_μj^μ_{\text{anom}}$, carefully isolating the finite contribution to the fermion triangle diagram. We calculate the longitudinally-enhanced observables $Z → X_γ$ (when $m_X < m_Z), f\bar{f} → X_γ$, and $Z_γ → Z_γ$ when $\textit{X}$ couples to the baryon number current. Introducing a "fake" gauge-invariance by writing $X^μ = A^μ – ∂^μπ/m_X$, the would-be gauge anomaly associated with $A_μj^μ_{\text{anom}}$ is canceled by $j^μ_{\text{anom}}∂_μπ/m_X$; this is the four-dimensional Green-Schwarz anomaly-cancellation mechanism at work. Our analysis demonstrates there is a much larger set of possible interactions that an EFT with a Stückelberg vector field can have, revealing scattering amplitudes that grow with energy. The growth of these amplitudes can be tamed by a dark Higgs sector, but this requires dark Higgs boson interactions (and reintroduces fine-tuning in the dark Higgs sector) that can be separated from X interactions only in the limit $g \ll 1$ .

Multidifferential study of identified charged hadron distributions in Z -tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =13$ TeV

Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against a Z boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 < p T < 100 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range 2.5 < η <4. The data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb –1 . Triple differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into the hadronization process for jets predominantly initiated by light quarks.

Accessing the gluon GTMD F 1 , 4 in exclusive π 0 production in e p collisions

We demonstrate that the longitudinal single target-spin asymmetry in exclusive π 0 production in e p collisions can give access to the imaginary part of the gluon generalized transverse momentum distribution (GTMD) F 1 , 4 . Such a longitudinal spin asymmetry that results from the Coulomb-nuclear interference effect, leads to a characteristic azimuthal angular correlation of sin 2 ϕ , where ϕ is the azimuthal angle between the scattered lepton transverse momentum and the recoil proton’s transverse momentum. We also present a numerical estimate of the asymmetry for the kinematics accessible at EIC and EicC. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Quasiclassical evaluation of gluon saturation induced helicity effects

At sub-eikonal order in the high-energy limit, helicity dependences are generally contained in the transverse components of the gluon field. In the gluon saturation regime, novel helicity effects arise from the nonlinear interaction between the eikonal-order longitudinal gluon field and the sub-eikonal-order transverse gluon field. We derive this saturation induced helicity-dependent field both by solving the classical Yang-Mills equations and through direct diagrammatic calculations. Our analysis shows that the saturation induced helicity effect is intrinsically a two-particle (or multiparticle) correlation effect, rather than a single-particle distribution effect. Furthermore, we evaluate this effect in the context of double-spin asymmetry for incoherent diffractive dijet production in longitudinally polarized electron-nucleus collisions, using a simplified helicity-extended McLerran-Venugopalan model. We find that the saturation induced helicity effect further suppresses the back-to-back peak in the dijet azimuthal angle correlation, with a magnitude comparable to that of the direct helicity effect. This gluon saturation induced helicity effect may offer a novel avenue to probe gluon saturation in polarized collisions. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Measurement of the branching fraction, polarization, and time-dependent C P asymmetry in B 0 → ρ + ρ − decays and constraint on the CKM angle ϕ 2

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and fraction of longitudinal polarization of B 0 → ρ + ρ − decays, which have two π 0 ’s in the final state. We also measure time-dependent C P violation parameters for decays into longitudinally polarized ρ + ρ − pairs. This analysis is based on a data sample containing ( 387 ± 6 ) × 10 6 ϒ ( 4 S ) mesons collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider in 2019–2022. We obtain B ( B 0 → ρ + ρ − ) = ( 2.8 9 − 0.22 + 0.23 − 0.27 + 0.29 ) × 10 − 5 , f L = 0.92 1 − 0.025 + 0.024 − 0.015 + 0.017 , S = − 0.26 ± 0.19 ± 0.08 , and C = − 0.02 ± 0.1 2 − 0.05 + 0.06 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We use these results to perform an isospin analysis to constrain the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle ϕ 2 and obtain two solutions; the result consistent with other Standard Model constraints is ϕ 2 = ( 92.6 − 4.7 + 4.5 ) ° . High-Statistics Measurement of Neutrino Quasielasticlike Scattering at 6 GeV on a Hydrocarbon Target

We measure neutrino charged-current quasielasticlike scattering on hydrocarbon at high statistics using the wideband Neutrinos at the Main Injector beam with neutrino energy peaked at 6 GeV. The double-differential cross section is reported in terms of muon longitudinal ( p ∥ ) and transverse ( p ⊥ ) momentum. Cross section contours versus lepton momentum components are approximately described by a conventional generator-based simulation, however, discrepancies are observed for transverse momenta above 0.5 GeV / c for longitudinal momentum ranges 3–5 and 9 – 20 GeV / c . The single differential cross section versus momentum transfer squared ( d σ / d Q QE 2 ) is measured over a four-decade range of Q 2 that extends to 10 GeV 2 . The cross section turnover and falloff in the Q 2 range 0.3 – 10 GeV 2 is not fully reproduced by generator predictions that rely on dipole form factors. Our measurement probes the axial-vector content of the hadronic current and complements the electromagnetic form factor data obtained using electron-nucleon elastic scattering. These results help oscillation experiments because they probe the importance of various correlations and final-state interaction effects within the nucleus, which have different effects on the visible energy in detectors.

Anharmonic Origin of the Giant Thermal Expansion of NaBr

ll phonons in a single crystal of NaBr are measured by inelastic neutron scattering at temperatures of 10, 300, and 700 K. Even at 300 K, the phonons, especially the longitudinal-optical phonons, show large shifts in frequencies and show large broadenings in energy owing to anharmonicity. Ab initio computations are first performed with the quasiharmonic approximation (QHA) in which the phonon frequencies depend only on V and on T only insofar as it alters V by thermal expansion. This QHA is an unqualified failure for predicting the temperature dependence of phonon frequencies, even 300 K, and the thermal expansion is in error by a factor of 4. Ab initio computations that include both anharmonicity and quasiharmonicity successfully predict both the temperature dependence of phonons and the large thermal expansion of NaBr. The frequencies of longitudinal-optical phonon modes decrease significantly with temperature owing to the real part of the phonon self-energy from explicit anharmonicity originating from the cubic anharmonicity of nearest-neighbor NaBr bonds. Anharmonicity is not a correction to the QHA predictions of thermal expansion and thermal phonon shifts but dominates the behavior.

Two-component dynamics and the liquid-like to gas-like crossover in supercritical water

Molecular-scale dynamics in sub- to super-critical water is studied with inelastic X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations. The obtained longitudinal current correlation spectra can be decomposed into two main components: a low-frequency (LF), gas-like component and a high-frequency (HF) component arising from the O--O stretching mode between hydrogen-bonded molecules, reminiscent of the longitudinal acoustic mode in ambient water. With increasing temperature, the hydrogen-bond network diminishes and the spectral weight shifts from HF to LF, leading to a transition from liquid-like to gas-like dynamics with rapid changes around the Widom line.

Zero Magnetic Field Plateau Phase Transition in Higher Chern Number Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulators

The plateau-to-plateau transition in quantum Hall effect under high magnetic fields is a celebrated quantum phase transition between two topological states. It can be achieved by either sweeping the magnetic field or tuning the carrier density. The recent realization of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators with tunable Chern numbers introduces the channel degree of freedom to the dissipation-free chiral edge transport and makes the study of the quantum phase transition between two topological states under zero magnetic field possible. Here, we synthesized the magnetic topological insulator (TI)/TI pentalayer heterostructures with different Cr doping concentrations in the middle magnetic TI layers using molecular beam epitaxy. By performing transport measurements, we found a potential plateau phase transition between C=1 and C=2 QAH states under zero magnetic field. In tuning the transition, the Hall resistance monotonically decreases from h/e2 to h/2e 2 , concurrently, the longitudinal resistance exhibits a maximum at the critical point. Our results show that the ratio between the Hall resistance and the longitudinal resistance is greater than 1 at the critical point, which indicates that the original chiral edge channel from the C=1 QAH state coexists with the dissipative bulk conduction channels. Subsequently, these bulk conduction channels appear to self-organize and form the second chiral edge channel in completing the plateau phase transition. Our study will motivate further investigations of this novel Chern number change-induced quantum phase transition and advance the development of the QAH chiral edge current-based electronic and spintronic devices.

Measured Potential Profile in a Quantum Anomalous Hall System Suggests Bulk-Dominated Current Flow

Ideally, quantum anomalous Hall systems should display zero longitudinal resistance. Yet in experimental quantum anomalous Hall systems elevated temperature can make the longitudinal resistance finite, indicating dissipative flow of electrons. Here, we show that the measured potentials at multiple locations within a device at elevated temperature are well-described by solution of Laplace's equation, assuming spatially-uniform conductivity, suggesting non-equilibrium current flows through the two-dimensional bulk. Extrapolation suggests that at even lower temperatures current may still flow primarily through the bulk rather than, as had been assumed, through edge modes. In conclusion, an argument for bulk current flow previously applied to quantum Hall systems supports this picture.
