Guaranteed robustness properties of multivariable nonlinear stochastic optimal regulators

The robustness of optimal regulators for nonlinear, deterministic and stochastic, multi-input dynamical systems is studied under the assumption that all state variables can be measured. It is shown that, under mild assumptions, such nonlinear regulators have a guaranteed infinite gain margin; moreover, they have a guaranteed 50 percent gain reduction margin and a 60 degree phase margin, in each feedback channel, provided that the system is linear in the control and the penalty to the control is quadratic, thus extending the well-known properties of LQ regulators to nonlinear optimal designs. These results are also valid for infinite horizon, average cost, stochastic optimal control problems.

Multivariate spline methods in surface fitting

The use of spline functions in the development of classification algorithms is examined. In particular, a method is formulated for producing spline approximations to bivariate density functions where the density function is decribed by a histogram of measurements. The resulting approximations are then incorporated into a Bayesiaan classification procedure for which the Bayes decision regions and the probability of misclassification is readily computed. Some preliminary numerical results are presented to illustrate the method.

Design of multivariable feedback control systems via spectral assignment using reduced-order models and reduced-order observers

The feasibility of using reduced order models and reduced order observers with eigenvalue/eigenvector assignment procedures is investigated. A review of spectral assignment synthesis procedures is presented. Then, a reduced order model which retains essential system characteristics is formulated. A constant state feedback matrix which assigns desired closed loop eigenvalues and approximates specified closed loop eigenvectors is calculated for the reduced order model. It is shown that the eigenvalue and eigenvector assignments made in the reduced order system are retained when the feedback matrix is implemented about the full order system. In addition, those modes and associated eigenvectors which are not included in the reduced order model remain unchanged in the closed loop full order system. The fulll state feedback design is then implemented by using a reduced order observer. It is shown that the eigenvalue and eigenvector assignments of the closed loop full order system remain unchanged when a reduced order observer is used. The design procedure is illustrated by an actual design problem.

Multivariate Spline Algorithms for CAGD

Two special polyhedra present themselves for the definition of B-splines: a simplex S and a box or parallelepiped B, where the edges of S project into an irregular grid, while the edges of B project into the edges of a regular grid. More general splines may be found by forming linear combinations of these B-splines, where the three-dimensional coefficients are called the spline control points. Univariate splines are simplex splines, where s = 1, whereas splines over a regular triangular grid are box splines, where s = 2. Two simple facts render the development of the construction of B-splines: (1) any face of a simplex or a box is again a simplex or box but of lower dimension; and (2) any simplex or box can be easily subdivided into smaller simplices or boxes. The first fact gives a geometric approach to Mansfield-like recursion formulas that express a B-spline in B-splines of lower order, where the coefficients depend on x. By repeated recursion, the B-spline will be expressed as B-splines of order 1; i.e., piecewise constants. In the case of a simplex spline, the second fact gives a so-called insertion algorithm that constructs the new control points if an additional knot is inserted.

Design of Multivariable Controllers Using the Integrated Analysis Capability (IAC)

Dynamic analysis and controls design for flexible spacecraft involves high-order dynamic systems with multiple inputs and outputs. Computer tools are essential for such analysis. The controls/structures interaction analysis capability of an inter-disciplinary computer software system, called the Integrated Analysis Capability (IAC), is described. An overview of IAC components and procedures is presented, and an example of a preliminary space station controls design is shown.

On the stabilizability of multivariable systems by minimum order compensation

In this paper, a derivation is provided of the necessary condition, mp equal to or greater than n, for stabilizability by constant gain feedback of the generic degree n, p x m system. This follows from another of the main results, which asserts that generic stabilizability is equivalent to generic solvability of a deadbeat control problem, provided mp equal to or less than n. Taken together, these conclusions make it possible to make some sharp statements concerning minimum order stabilization. The techniques are primarily drawn from decision algebra and classical algebraic geometry and have additional consequences for problems of stabilizability and pole-assignability. Among these are the decidability (by a Sturm test) of the equivalence of generic pole-assignability and generic stabilizability, the semi-algebraic nature of the minimum order, q, of a stabilizing compensator, and the nonexistence of formulae involving rational operations and extraction of square roots for pole-assigning gains when they exist, answering in the negative a question raised by Anderson, Bose, and Jury (1975).
