Distributed gradient descent for solving optimal power flow in radial networks

Node controllers and power distribution networks in accordance with embodiments of the invention enable distributed power control. One embodiment includes a node controller comprising a memory containing: a plurality of node operating parameters; and a plurality of node operating parameters describing operating parameters for a set of at least one node selected from the group consisting of at least one downstream node and at least one upstream node; wherein the processor is configured by the node controller application to: receive and store in memory a plurality of coordinator parameters describing operating parameters of a node coordinator by the network interface; and calculate updated node operating parameters using an iterative gradient projection process to determine updated node parameters using node operating parameters that describe operating parameters of node and operating parameters of the set of at least one node, where each iteration is determined by the coordinator parameters.

Conservation Voltage Reduction with Distributed Energy Resource Management System, Grid-Edge, and Legacy Devices: Preprint

Distribution utilities use conservation voltage reduction (CVR) to obtain energy savings and lower peak demand by reducing bus voltages. Traditionally, the CVR is accomplished by controlling the legacy assets such as load tap changers, voltage regulators, and capacitor banks. The deployment of the advanced distribution management system (ADMS) and distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) enables the integration of distributed energy resources into the distribution networks and provide the grid services including CVR. This paper studies the coordinated operation of an ADMS and a DERMS in achieving CVR and voltage regulation. A commercial ADMS uses legacy devices and Edge-of-Network Grid Optimization (ENGO) devices to obtain energy savings through CVR. A prototype DERMS dispatches the photovoltaic smart inverters based on real-time optimal power low to ensure voltage regulation across the feeder. The results show that the coordinated operation of ADMS and DERMS is effective in achieving CVR and voltage regulation. Specifically, energy savings of up to 4.7% are observed in the real utility distribution system used in this study.

Optimized asynchronous training of neural networks using a distributed parameter server with eager updates

A method of training a neural network includes, at a local computing node, receiving remote parameters from a set of one or more remote computing nodes, initiating execution of a forward pass in a local neural network in the local computing node to determine a final output based on the remote parameters, initiating execution of a backward pass in the local neural network to determine updated parameters for the local neural network, and prior to completion of the backward pass, transmitting a subset of the updated parameters to the set of remote computing nodes.

Development and Testing of a new Current-Regulated Arc Modulator for the LINAC

In this study, the performance of a current-regulated arc modulator was investigated with a focus on its role in initiating and sustaining plasma discharge within the Magnetron Body of the LINAC system. The analysis centered on how switching components, circuit topology, and feedback loop architecture influence critical factors such as energy efficiency, discharge stability, and long-term plasma containment. Particular attention was given to variations in pulse termination behavior, as observed through oscilloscope traces, which revealed inconsistencies affecting the duty factor and cathode temperature. These fluctuations have downstream effects on the cesium-coated cathode surface, thereby impacting H⁻ ion production and beam reliability. Simulation-based testing in LTspice was used to evaluate noise suppression techniques and arc current regulation schemes, revealing how optimized snubber networks, improved pulse shaping, and feedback stability can mitigate modulator-induced noise. The results identified hardware level parameters that significantly enhance discharge repeatability and improve overall plasma performance under operational conditions.

An Approach to Realize Generalized Optimal Motion Primitives Using Physics Informed Neural Networks

Autonomous manipulation is a challenging problem in field robotics due to uncertainty in object properties, constraints, and coupling phenomenon with robot control systems. Humans learn motion primitives over time to effectively interact with the environment. We postulate that autonomous manipulation can be enabled by basic sets of motion primitives as well, but do not necessitate mimicking human motion primitives. Here, this work presents an approach to generalized optimal motion primitives using physics-informed neural networks. Our simulated and experimental results demonstrate that optimality is notionally maintained where the mean maximum observed final position percent error was 0.564% and the average mean error for all the trajectories was 1.53%. These results indicate that notional generalization is attained using a physics-informed neural network approach that enables near optimal real-time adaptation of primitive motion profiles.

Simulation-Based Parameter Optimization Framework for Large-Scale Hybrid Smart Grid Communications Systems Design

The design of reliable, dynamic, fault-tolerant hybrid smart grid communication networks is a challenge to achieve for autonomous power grids. Hybrid networks use different communications technologies for different area networks. A simulation-based parameter optimization framework is proposed to tune parameters of hybrid communication technologies to achieve the optimal network performance. It consists of three main components: a parallel executor used to speedup a list of simulations; a sampler running simulations using the parallel executor at each generation; and a hybrid stochastic optimization algorithm for tuning configurable parameters of hybrid designs and applications. The proposed hybrid metaheuristic optimization algorithm combines an evolutionary algorithm with a gradient method to quickly achieve an approximately global optimum solution. Three optimization test functions are employed to train the adjustable parameters of the hybrid algorithm. Results show the proposed parameter optimization framework can help the designer choose the right hybrid architecture with an optimal parameter set for a large-scale broadband PLC-WiMAX hybrid smart grid communication network.

Temporal network alignment via GoT-WAVE

Abstract Motivation Network alignment (NA) finds conserved regions between two networks. NA methods optimize node conservation (NC) and edge conservation. Dynamic graphlet degree vectors are a state-of-the-art dynamic NC measure, used within the fastest and most accurate NA method for temporal networks: DynaWAVE. Here, we use graphlet-orbit transitions (GoTs), a different graphlet-based measure of temporal node similarity, as a new dynamic NC measure within DynaWAVE, resulting in GoT-WAVE. Results On synthetic networks, GoT-WAVE improves DynaWAVE’s accuracy by 30% and speed by 64%. On real networks, when optimizing only dynamic NC, the methods are complementary. Furthermore, only GoT-WAVE supports directed edges. Hence, GoT-WAVE is a promising new temporal NA algorithm, which efficiently optimizes dynamic NC. Ideal isotropic auxetic networks from random networks

We design and create isotropically auxetic networks with Poisson's ratio close to −1 in experiments. To achieve this, we selectively prune bonds from disordered networks, and then optimize the properties of individual bonds and nodes.

Accurate and Accelerated Neuromorphic Network Design Leveraging A Bayesian Hyperparameter Pareto Optimization Approach

Neuromorphic systems allow for extremely efficient hardware implementations for neural networks (NNs). In recent years, several algorithms have been presented to train spiking NNs (SNNs) for neuromorphic hardware. However, SNNs often provide lower accuracy than their artificial NNs (ANNs) counterparts or require computationally expensive and slow training/inference methods. To close this gap, designers typically rely on reconfiguring SNNs through adjustments in the neuron/synapse model or training algorithm itself. Nevertheless, these steps incur significant design time, while still lacking the desired improvement in terms of training/inference times (latency). Designing SNNs that can mimic the accuracy of ANNs with reasonable training times is an exigent challenge in neuromorphic computing. In this work, we present an alternative approach that looks at such designs as an optimization problem rather than algorithm or architecture redesign. We develop a versatile multiobjective hyperparameter optimization (HPO) for automatically tuning HPs of two state-of-the-art SNN training algorithms, SLAYER and HYBRID. We emphasize that, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first work trying to improve SNNs’ computational efficiency, accuracy, and training time using an efficient HPO. We demonstrate significant performance improvements for SNNs on several datasets without the need to redesign or invent new training algorithms/architectures. Our approach results in more accurate networks with lower latency and, in turn, higher energy efficiency than previous implementations. In particular, we demonstrate improvement in accuracy and more than 5× reduction in the training/inference time for the SLAYER algorithm on the DVS Gesture dataset. In the case of HYBRID, we demonstrate 30% reduction in timesteps while surpassing the accuracy of the state-of-the-art networks on CIFAR10. Further, our analysis suggests that even a seemingly minor change in HPs could change the accuracy by 5 - 6×.

Data-Driven Optimal Control of Traffic Signals for Urban Road Networks

This paper studies the issue of data-driven optimal control design for traffic signals of oversaturated urban road networks. The signal control system based on the store and forward model is generally uncontrollable for which the controllable decomposition is needed. Instead of identifying the unknown parameters like saturation rates and turning ratios, a finite number of measured trajectories can be used to parametrize the system and help directly construct a transformation matrix for Kalman controllable decomposition through the fundamental lemma of J. C. Willems. On top of that, an infinite-horizon linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problem is formulated considering the constraints of green times for traffic signals. The problem can be solved through a two-phase data-driven learning process, where one solves an infinite-horizon unconstrained LQR problem and the other solves a finite-horizon constrained LQR problem. The simulation result shows the theoretical analysis is effective and the proposed data-driven controller can yield desired performance for reducing traffic congestion.

Transformer Neural Networks with Spatiotemporal Attention for Predictive Control and Optimization of Industrial Processes

In the context of real-time optimization and model predictive control of industrial systems, machine learning, and neural networks represent cutting-edge tools that hold promise for enhancing dynamic modeling. This work presents a novel transformer neural network architecture for real-time optimization and model predictive control. This network design includes a modified attention mechanism inspired by positional embedding attention from vision transformers and task-specific modifications to the input-output structure of the transformer’s decoder stack. Experiments were conducted using data from a 450 MW coal-fired power plant to evaluate this approach's effectiveness. The transformer neural network was compared with conventional recurrent models, including GRU and LSTM. The transformer exhibited a 6% increase in the R-squared (R2) value of predictions and an 83% reduction in mean squared error (MSE). Computation time was also reduced by 84% compared to conventional recurrent models.
