Non-Parametric Source Term Uncertainty Estimation

This paper describes the source term calculation documented in SAND2011-0128, ''Accident Source Terms for Light-Water Nuclear Power Plants Using High-Burnup or MOX Fuel'' and describes one method for implementing the calculation in MATLAB.

Report on Year-3 of Water NSTF Matrix Testing: Two-Phase Parametric Test Series

The Natural convection Shutdown heat removal Test Facility (NSTF) is large scale test facility constructed at Argonne National Laboratory to generate NQA-1 qualified validation data for passive decay heat removal systems in advanced reactor concepts. With support from the Department of Energy (DOE) offices of Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) and Advanced Reactors Regulatory Development (RD), this facility reflects key features of a ½ scale, water-based, Reactor Cavity Cooling System (RCCS) and is intended to study the behavior, bound performance, and ultimately guide design decisions for passive decay heat removal systems. Since the facility also retains all aspects common to a fundamental boiling water thermosiphon, the generated experimental data sets are well poised to advance the understanding of fundamental natural circulation boiling and two-phase flow phenomena.

Parametric Study of SANSMIC Input and Resulting Impact on Predicted Cavern Geometry and Leaching Efficiency

The Sandia Solution Mining Code (SANSMIC) has been used for many years to examine the development of salt cavern geometry, both in a confirmatory manner with comparisons made to real-world sonar data and in a predictive manner when updated sonar data are not available. SANSMIC models require some modeling choices in order to incorporate real-world data. Key modeling choices include the vertical resolution of cavern geometry to implement, as well as how to incorporate daily raw water injection data into the SANSMIC model. This report documents five studies that address the impact of the modeling choices on the predicted cavern geometries and calculated leaching efficiencies. In most cases, hypothetical cylindrical initial cavern geometries are used to provide a common baseline against which to test the systematic variation of input variables including cavern radius, oil-brine-interface (OBI) depth, vertical cell size, raw water injection rate, raw water injection duration, workover time, and number of leaching stages. The use of smaller cell sizes is recommended moving forward to provide a better one-to-one relationship between sonar data and the modeled cavern. A new methodology for incorporating raw water injection data is also recommended, in order to more closely model real-world injection and workover times. Overall, the systematic studies performed here have increased our confidence in previous SANSMIC model results, as well future use of the code for predicting leaching effects on cavern geometries. Some minor changes to modeling choices are recommended, which can easily be applied with the version of SANSMIC currently under development.

Heating and Acceleration of Solar Wind by Parametric Decay Instability Mediated Turbulence

One of the main goals of this project to understand the origin of density fluctuations in the solar winds, as revealed by the NASA’s Flagship satellite Parker Solar Probe (PSP) measurements, which motivates us to simulate and analyze magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the compressible regime. To achieve this goal, we have developed a set of sophisticated turbulence driving methods to study how MHD turbulence will develop under different time-correlated fluctuations at large-scales. Another key advance is that we have developed a new 3+1 (three spatial plus time domain) 4D FFT analysis of simulation data-cubes so that we can perform the spatio-temporal spectrum and mode decomposition studies on MHD turbulence.

Developing a high-speed terahertz imaging system based on parametric upconversion imaging for penetrative sensing

Imaging using THz waves has been a promising option for penetrative measurements in environments that are opaque to visible wavelengths. However, available THz imaging systems have been limited to relatively low frame rates and cannot be applied to study fast dynamics. This work explores the use of upconversion imaging techniques based on nonlinear optics to enable wavelength-flexible high frame rate THz imaging. UpConversion Imaging (UCI) uses nonlinear conversion techniques to shift the THz wavelengths carrying a target image to shorter visible or near-IR wavelengths that can be detected by available high-speed cameras. This report describes the analysis methodology used to design a prototype high-rate THz UCI system and gives a detailed explanations of the design choices that were made. The design uses a high-rate pulse-burst laser system to pump both THz generation and THz upconversion detection, allowing for scaling to acquisition rates in excess of 10 kHz. The design of the prototype system described in this report has been completed and all necessary materials have been procured. Assembly and characterization testing is on-going at the submission of this report. This report proposes future directions for work on high-rate THz UCI and potential applications of future systems.
