High-Resolution Scanning Coded-Mask-Based X-ray Multi-Contrast Imaging and Tomography

Near-field X-ray speckle tracking has been used in phase-contrast imaging and tomography as an emerging technique, providing higher contrast images than traditional absorption radiography. Most reported methods use sandpaper or membrane filters as speckle generators and digital image cross-correlation for phase reconstruction, which has either limited resolution or requires a large number of position scanning steps. Recently, we have proposed a novel coded-mask-based multi-contrast imaging (CMMI) technique for single-shot measurement with superior performance in efficiency and resolution compared with other single-shot methods. We present here a scanning CMMI method for the ultimate imaging resolution and phase sensitivity by using a coded mask as a high-contrast speckle generator, the flexible scanning mode, the adaption of advanced maximum-likelihood optimization to scanning data, and the multi-resolution analysis. Scanning CMMI can outperform other speckle-based imaging methods, such as X-ray speckle vector tracking, providing higher quality absorption, phase, and dark-field images with fewer scanning steps. Scanning CMMI is also successfully demonstrated in multi-contrast tomography, showing great potentials in high-resolution full-field imaging applications, such as in vivo biomedical imaging.

Scheimpflug LIDAR for Gas Sensing at Elevated Temperatures

Localized operating conditions inside boilers, heat recovery steam generators, or other large thermal systems have a huge impact on the efficiency, environmental performance, and lifetime of components. It is extremely difficult to measure species accurately within these systems due to the high temperatures and harsh environments, locally oxidizing or reducing atmospheres, ash, other particulates, and other damaging chemical species. Physical probes quickly suffer damage and are rendered nonfunctional. This work has attempted to adapt the measurement approach based on Scheimpflug light detection and ranging (S-LIDAR) for the remote sensing of gas species inside the high-temperature boiler environment. For a proof-of-concept, the detection of Raman signals of N 2 , O 2 , and CO 2 and their behavior with increasing temperature have been presented.

Towards a New μ→eγ Search with the MEG II Experiment: From Design to Commissioning

The MEG experiment represents the state of the art in the search for the Charged Lepton Flavour Violating μ + →e + γ decay. With its first phase of operations at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), MEG set the most stringent upper limit on the BR (μ + →e + γ) ≤ 4.2×10 –13 at 90% confidence level, imposing one of the tightest constraints on models predicting LFV-enhancements through new physics beyond the Standard Model. An upgrade of the MEG experiment, MEG II, was designed and it is presently in the commissioning phase, aiming at a sensitivity level of 6×10 –14 . The MEG II experiment relies on a series of upgrades, which include an improvement of the photon detector resolutions, brand new detectors on the positron side with better acceptance, efficiency and performances and new and optimized trigger and DAQ electronics to exploit a muon beam intensity twice as high as that of MEG (7×10 7 μ + /s). This paper presents a complete overview of the MEG II experimental apparatus and the current status of the detector commissioning in view of the physics data taking in the upcoming three years.

Halted-pendulum Relaxation: Application to White Dwarf Binary Initial Data

Studying compact-star binaries and their mergers is integral to determining progenitors for observable transients. Today, compact-star mergers are typically studied via state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics codes. One such numerical technique, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), is frequently chosen for its excellent mass, energy, and momentum conservation. The natural treatment of vacuum and the ability to represent highly irregular morphologies make SPH an excellent tool for the study of compact-star binaries and mergers. For many scenarios, including binary systems, the outcome of simulations is only as accurate as the initial conditions. For SPH, it is essential to ensure that the particles are distributed regularly, representing the initial density profile but without long-range correlations. Particle noise in the form of high-frequency local motion and low-frequency global dynamics must be damped out. Damping the latter can be as computationally intensive as the actual simulation. We discuss a new and straightforward relaxation method, halted-pendulum relaxation (HPR), to remove global oscillation modes of SPH particle configurations. In combination with effective external potentials representing gravitational and orbital forces, we show that HPR has an excellent performance in efficiently relaxing SPH particles to the desired density distribution and removing global oscillation modes. We compare the method to frequently used relaxation approaches and test it on a white dwarf binary model at its Roche-lobe overflow limit. We highlight the importance of our method in achieving accurate initial conditions and its effect on achieving circular orbits and realistic accretion rates when compared with other general relaxation methods.

DOE Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge: Development, Metrics, and Early Field Observations

Space heating in residential buildings is a major contributor of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. New, advanced electric heat pumps are poised to provide a low carbon alternative to traditional fossil-based heating, especially in colder climates. Widespread deployment of cold climate heat pumps could help address the significant portion of building emissions and primary energy used in American households, but these gains will require broader acceptance from consumers and decision makers. As part of the “Energy, Emissions, and Equity” (E3) initiative, the U.S. Department of Energy launched the Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge (CCHP) in 2021 to accelerate the deployment of the next generation of air source heat pumps. The Challenge is currently focused on residential, centrally ducted, electric heat pumps, with a nominal cooling capacity greater than or equal to 24,000 Btu/h (2 tons) and less than or equal to 65,000 Btu/h (5 tons). The Challenge specifications represent a best-in-class heat pump product that provides high-efficiency heating performance in cold climates, employs environmentally friendly low-Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants, and is designed to be grid interactive. Spearheaded by DOE in partnership with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), the CCHP Challenge brings together numerous major heat pump manufacturers and key stakeholders including utilities and state agencies across the country. In addition to performance testing in a laboratory environment, a key component of this research is evaluating the in-field performance of the prototype heat pumps developed as part of the Challenge. This paper will discuss the development of the CCHP Challenge, key performance specifications, and the energy and non-energy metrics that will be evaluated through the field study. The types of data that are being collected from the units installed in homes across North America as part of the field validation will be described, including details about the sensors and data acquisition system. Data cleaning and analysis methodologies will be discussed, along with early observations from the winter 2022-2023, spring and summer performance periods, and an assessment of non-energy metrics through pre- and post-installation homeowner surveys. Challenges uncovered and lessons learned throughout the process will also be discussed. Finally, the paper will discuss next steps for the second winter assessment period, areas needing additional research, and potential applications of the data collected and analyzed through this work.

Towards Automatic and Agile AI/ML Accelerator Design with End-to-End Synthesis

Domain-specific designs offer greater energy efficiency and performance gain than general-purpose processors. For this reason, modern system-on-chips have a significant portion of their silicon area with custom accelerators. However, designing hardware by hand is laborious and time-consuming, given the large design space and the performance, power, and area constraints that are not realized in the software. Moreover, domain-specific algorithms (e.g., machine learning models) are evolving quickly, challenging the accelerator design further. To address these issues, this paper presents SODA Synthesizer, an automated open-source high-level ML framework to Verilog modular compiler targeting AI/ML Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) accelerators. SODA tightly couples the Multi- Level Intermediate Representation (MLIR) compiler infrastructure [24] and open-source HLS approaches. Thus, SODA can support various ML frameworks and algorithms and can perform optimizations that combine specialized architecture templates and conventional HLS to generate the hardware modules. In addition, SODA’s closed-loop design space exploration (DSE) engine allows developers to perform end-to-end design space explorations on different metrics and technology nodes.

A theoretically perfectly absorbing photoconductive all-dielectric metasurface is provided. This metasurface can improve the efficiency and performance of ultrafast photoconductive switches and detectors. In an embodiment, the metasurface is incorporated in photoconductive THz switches or detectors. In embodiments, the metasurface is constituted by a network of gallium arsenide resonators. Each resonator supports two degenerate and critically coupled magnetic dipole modes. Simultaneous excitation of these two modes leads to theoretically close-to-perfect optical absorption near the resonant wavelength.

Controller area network decoder (CAN-D)

A system and method for decoding an unknown automotive controller area network (“CAN”) message definitions. CAN data vehicle signal mappings are typically held in secret and varied by automotive model and year. Without knowledge of the mappings, the wealth of real-time vehicle data hidden in the automotive CAN packets is uninterpretable—impeding research, after-market tuning, efficiency and performance monitoring, fault diagnosis, and privacy-related technologies. This technology can ascertain the CAN signals' boundaries (start bit and length), endianness (byte ordering), signedness (binary-to-integer encoding) from raw CAN data. This allows conversion of CAN data to time series. Interpreting the translated CAN data's physical meaning and finding a linear mapping to standard units (e.g., knowing the signal is speed and scaling values to represent units of miles per hour) can be achieved for many signals by leveraging diagnostic standards to obtain real-time measurements of in-vehicle systems. The system and method can be integrated into lightweight hardware enabling an OBD-II plugin for real-time in-vehicle CAN decoding or run on standard computers. The system can output a standard DBC file with the signal definition information.

X-ray Response of the Fully-Depleted, p-Channel SiSeRO-CCD

We present an X-ray characterization of a fully depleted, 725 $μ$m thick p-channel SiSeRO CCD. Measurements with a $^{55}$Fe source yield an energy resolution of $54 \pm 0.9$ eV ($14.6 \pm 0.25 e^{-}$) at 5.9 keV for single-pixel events, demonstrating that the SiSeRO amplifier preserves the intrinsic charge resolution of the CCD under multi-sample non-destructive readout. Characterization with a $^{241}$Am source extends the response to higher-energy photons, with reconstructed spectral features observed between 9-26 keV and the 59.5 keV $γ$ emission. These measurements, together with a muon-derived diffusion calibration, show that charge transport and diffusion are consistent with interactions spanning the full sensor depth. These results demonstrate that the SiSeRO CCD simultaneously achieves sub-electron noise performance and efficient charge collection in a thick, fully depleted silicon detector. This combination enables X-ray spectroscopy across a broad energy range while maintaining sensitivity to faint signals.

Synthetic Lubricants Derived from Plastic Waste and their Tribological Performance

The energy efficiency, mechanical durability, and environmental compatibility of all moving machine components rely heavily on advanced lubricants for smooth and safe operation. Herein an alternative family of high-quality liquid (HQL) lubricants was derived by the catalytic conversion of pre- and post-consumer polyolefin waste. The plastic-derived lubricants performed comparably to synthetic base oils such as polyalphaolefins (PAOs), both with a wear scar volume (WSV) of 7.5×10 -5 mm -3 . HQLs also performed superior to petroleum-based lubricants such as Group III mineral oil with a WSV of 1.7×10 -4 mm -3 , showcasing a 44% reduction in wear. Furthermore, a synergistic reduction in friction and wear was observed when combining the upcycled plastic lubricant with synthetic oils. Additionally, life cycle and techno-economic analyses also showed this process to be energetically efficient and economically feasible. This novel technology offers a cost-effective opportunity to reduce the harmful environmental impact of plastic waste on our planet and to save energy through reduction of friction and wear-related degradations in transportation applications akin to synthetic oils.

Polythiophene-based terpolymers with modulated aggregation behaviors for high-performance organic solar cells with 16.6% efficiency

Polythiophenes (PTs) are an attractive class of polymer donors (PDs) for organic solar cells (OSCs) owing to their relatively simple structures and scalable synthesis. Herein, a series of chlorinated thiazole-incorporated PT terpolymers are designed and high-performance OSCs with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.6% are demonstrated. By incorporating two different units, 3,3'-difluoro-2,2'-bithiophene (T2F2) and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT), the aggregation properties of the terpolymers (PTz-FX; X = 0, 30, 50, 70, and 100, where X represents the mole percentage of T2F2 to total T2F2 +TT) are modulated. Among the PTz-FX series, PTz-F70 is found to be the optimal P D because its suitably tuned aggregation property leads to an optimized blend morphology with well-developed crystalline structures and donor–acceptor intermixed domains. The balanced morphology not only promotes charge generation/transport but also suppresses charge recombination in OSC devices. Thus, the PTz-F70-based OSCs achieve the highest PCE (16.6%), outperforming the OSCs based on PTz-FX with extremely strong (PTz-F100, PCE = 14.7%) or weak (PTz-F0, PCE = 12.0%) aggregation properties. The PCE of the PTz-F70-based OSCs is one of the highest performances among PT-based binary OSCs. Finally, this study highlights the importance of controlling the aggregation property of PTs for achieving high-performance PT-based OSCs.

Power Electronic Development Challenges for High Power Density Integrated Electric Drive Applications

The ever-increasing demand for compact, efficient, and high-performance traction drive systems for transportation applications has accelerated the development of integrated electric drives. In these systems, the electric machine and inverter are integrated within a single housing, offering significant advantages in electrical performance, volume, weight, cost, and overall system efficiency. Despite these benefits, such high levels of integration introduce a new set of challenges, particularly in power electronic design and component selection. This article presents an in-depth investigation of a highly integrated electric drive architecture with an internal stator-mounted inverter, highlighting key design considerations and trade-offs aimed exclusively at maximizing system power density.Based on a comprehensive review of the literature, the power density of a voltage-source-inverter-driven electric drive is primarily governed by the volumetric contributions of the power modules, heat sinks, and DC-link capacitors. Accordingly, this work focuses on the optimization of these three critical components to enhance the inverter's overall power density. The proposed design achieves a power density of 100 kW/L, demonstrating the effectiveness of the presented approach for next-generation integrated electric drive systems.

How Does Home Energy Score Affect Home Value and Mortgage Performance?

Energy-efficient homes save their occupants money through lower energy bills. These savings might be capitalized into higher home sale prices. They also improve the household’s net cash flow, which might make households better able to pay mortgage debt. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Home Energy Score (HES) assigns a 1-10 score to homes and estimates annual energy bills based on modeled energy consumption. In this paper we investigated the relationship between HES metrics and two housing market outcomes: home sale price and mortgage performance. We found that the relationship was only statistically significant in places with a mandatory HES assessment at the time of sale. Using a sample of 26,291 home sales that occurred after HES assessments, we found that a one-point increase in HES in these locations was associated with a 0.5% increase in sale price, and an increase in $100 of estimated annual energy bills was associated with a 0.4% decrease. This magnitude of effect is consistent with estimated magnitudes of home sale premiums for other green or energy-efficient home certifications in the literature. We also found that a one-point increase in HES was associated with a 5.5% reduction in the odds of a loan going 30 days delinquent if the loan originated after the assessment occurred. Similarly, we found that a $100 decrease in estimated annual energy bills was associated with a 2.3% decrease in the odds of a loan going delinquent if it originated after the assessment occurred. Our results suggest that HES provides a valuable signal for housing market transactions in specific situations.
