Hazard and risk analysis framework for nuclear power plant–based integrated energy systems

Employing integrated energy systems (IESs) with nuclear power plants (NPPs) can improve NPP utilization by leveraging dedicated thermal and electric power delivery, but it may also increase operational safety risks. This paper presents a framework to identify and quantify hazards and risks for such IESs. The framework combines accidentology to review past industrial accidents with failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) to identify potential future incidents. Hydrogen explosion and toxic chemical release hazards are of particular concern. Explosion consequences are quantified using the Bauwens-Dorofeev (Bauwens) and trinitrotoluene equivalent mass (TNT-EM) methods, while chemical release consequences are computed using the Gaussian atmospheric dispersion method. Operational disturbances from direct electrical and thermal integration that may affect NPP safety are modeled using probabilistic risk analysis (PRA). Hazards and risks are then evaluated for regulatory compliance. The framework is applied to IESs comprising pressurized or boiling water reactors supplying three levels of thermal and electrical power to industrial customers. Case studies include high-temperature steam electrolysis hydrogen plants of varying capacities and a synthetic fuel production plant. Sensitivity analysis examines piping component failures in the PRA model as a precursor to cost estimation for thermal extraction line design. Additionally, Fussel-Vessely (FV) and risk increase importance (RII) measures identify risk-informed design improvements for the thermal extraction system. FMEA highlights hazards such as loss of offsite power, prompt loss of electrical load, loss of thermal output, and immediate steam diversion, in addition to hydrogen explosions and toxic chemical releases. Both Bauwens and TNT-EM methods suggest maintaining several hundred meters of separation between the NPP and hydrogen facility to mitigate explosion risks. PRA results show a maximum initiating event frequency increase of 1.15% and an overall risk increase of 0.28%. Importance measure analysis identifies upstream pipe leak isolation components as critical. Evaluating the results against safety regulations, it is concluded that hazards and risks can be managed to comply with regulations through risk-informed thermal and electrical connection designs, component selection, maintenance programs, and safe separation distances between NPPs and integrated industrial facilities.

Postanaerobic Digestion Manure Fibers as a Renewable Source of Lignin-Derived Aromatic Compounds for Microbial Upgrading

Abstract Postanaerobic digestion manure fibers are an abundant solid residue that remains underutilized. The substantial lignocellulosic content of digested manure opens the possibility of using it as a renewable resource for producing valuable products. In this study, we performed compositional and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses to determine lignin content and aromatic composition of these fibers. Additionally, alkaline-based treatment and reductive catalytic fractionation were evaluated as two different processes to produce aromatic-rich streams. The liquor from the alkaline treatment was subsequently utilized for microbial upgrading to produce 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDC). The results showed that lignin in manure fibers represents 30% of the biomass (dry weight basis), with a ∼26% abundance of β-ether-linked aromatics and ∼13% p-coumarate moieties, indicating that the amount of lignin in the postanaerobic biomass is comparable to a moderately pretreated plant biomass. The alkaline treatment released 5.6 g aromatics/kg fibers, while reductive catalytic fractionation produced 14.0 g aromatics/kg fibers. A bioreactor operated in fed-batch mode produced a yield of ∼1 mol of PDC/mol measured aromatics at a rate of 0.2 g PDC/L·h and a titer of 2.6 g PDC/L. This study demonstrates how postanaerobic digestion manure fibers could be used in a circular bioeconomy by harnessing their lignocellulosic content to extract aromatic compounds and use them for obtaining valuable chemicals via microbial upgrading.

Updated global and regional trends of stratospheric ozone profiles

We present updated evaluation of stratospheric ozone profile trends in the 60° S–60°N latitude range using long-term ground-based and satellite climate data records, as well as simulations by chemistry-climate models. The trends are evaluated using the LOTUS (Long-term Ozone Trends and Uncertainties in the Stratosphere) regression model. Analyses of satellite data confirm the statistically significant positive ozone trends in the period 2000–2024 in the upper stratosphere of ~1–3% per decade, with larger trends at mid-latitudes compared to the tropics. The trends are slightly positive or close to zero in the middle stratosphere, and mostly negative, -1 to -2% per decade, in the lower stratosphere, but they are not statistically significant. The morphology and magnitude of ozone trends are similar to previous analyses (2000–2020 trends). Ozone trends in 2000–2024 predicted by chemistry-climate model simulations are in good agreement with combined satellite trends. In the upper stratosphere, models predict a slightly stronger ozone recovery than observations. In the lower stratosphere, both models and satellite observations report negative trends in the tropics, while modelled ozone trends are slightly positive at mid-latitudes. Ozone profile trends over several stations estimated from ground-based records capture the same overall vertical pattern of ozone trends as merged gridded satellite datasets. Analyses of regional ozone profile trends in 2003–2024 using merged satellite datasets confirmed the previous observations of a longitudinal structure in ozone trends in the NH mid-latitude stratosphere, with positive trends over Scandinavia and negative trends over Siberia. However, the magnitude of this dipole-like structure is reduced compared to previous analyses.

3D Printing ofThermally Responsive Shape Memory LiquidCrystalline Epoxy Networks

Abstract A two-component liquid crystalline epoxy network (LCEN) with shape memory behavior was developed and evaluated as a candidate material for 3D printing. The cure kinetics of the uncured material and the shape memory properties of the cured LCEN were investigated by using parallel plate rheology and dynamic mechanical analysis, respectively. A commercially available fumed silica additive was introduced to the neat, uncured material to improve the rheological properties for 3D printing. The addition of fumed silica was found to increase the yield stress, shear-thinning behavior, and toughness of the uncured epoxy ink. Polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements between the neat and additive-modified LCEN suggested a reduction in liquid crystalline alignment in the modified LCEN, owing to interactions between crystalline domains and fumed silica, which in turn influenced the mechanical behavior. Overall, the additive was found to be successful in preserving the shape memory properties of LCEN while improving its printability.
