Recent Advances of PyROS: A Pyomo Solver for Nonconvex Two-Stage Robust Optimization in Process Systems Engineering

The document presents recent algorithmic and implementation advances of the two-stage robust optimization (RO) solver PyROS, and a benchmarking study which demonstrates the utility of PyROS for two-stage RO problems. The advances include extensions of the scope of PyROS to models with uncertain variable bounds, improvements to the initializations of the subproblems used by the underlying cutting set algorithm, and extensions of the uncertainty set interfaces. The benchmarking study is performed on a library of over 8,500 instances, with variations in the nonlinearities, degree-of-freedom partitioning, uncertainty sets, and polynomial decision rule approximations. An amine-based CO2 capture case study is presented to demonstrate the utility of PyROS for large-scale process models. Overall, the results highlight the effectiveness of PyROS for obtaining robust solutions to optimization problems with uncertain equality constraints.

Nonlinear dynamics of global atmospheric and Earth-system processes

General Circulation Model (GCM) studies of the atmospheric response to change boundary conditions are discussed. Results are reported on an extensive series of numerical studies based on the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Community Climate Model (CCM) general circulation model. In these studies the authors determined the response to systematic changes in atmospheric CO2 ranging from 100 to 1000 ppm; to changes in the prescribed sea surface temperature (SST) in the Gulf of Mexico, such as occurred during the deglaciation phase of the last ice age; to changes in soil moisture over North America; and to changes in sea ice extent in the Southern Hemisphere. Study results show that the response of surface temperature and other variables is nearly logarithmic, with lower levels of CO2 implying greater sensitivity of the atmospheric state to changes in CO2. It was found that the surface temperature of the Gulf of Mexico exerts considerable control over the storm track and behavior of storm systems over the North Atlantic through its influence on evaporation and the source of latent heat. It was found that reductions in soil moisture can play a significant role in amplifying and maintaining North American drought, particularly when a negative soil moisture anomaly prevails late in the spring.

Recent Advances of PyROS: A Pyomo Solver for Nonconvex Two-Stage Robust Optimization in Process Systems Engineering

This poster highlights uncertainty and technical risk reduction capabilities in CCSI2, with a focus on robust optimization. It presents recent advances of the two-stage robust optimization (RO) solver PyROS and applications to advanced energy systems optimization. To demonstrate the computational performance and reliability of PyROS, a benchmarking study on a library of over 8,500 small-scale RO problems is presented. Further, PyROS is used to obtain robust system designs of a MEA-based CO2 absorber under uncertainty in the thermodynamic property models for a variety of CO2 capture rate threshold requirements. Overall, the results demonstrate that the PyROS solver, including recent extensions to multi-stage RO settings, provides a reliable avenue to optimize the design and operation of advanced energy systems subject to various sources of parametric uncertainty.

Process systems engineering enables efficient and sustainable membrane-based critical material separations

This presentation summarizes work completed over the past year for PrOMMiS Task 2.1. The first half of the preseation motivates the need to develop sustainable critical mineral separation technology, and how PSE is particularly well-suited to tackle this problem. The second half of the presentation presents preliminary results for the custom cost model for diafiltration (2.1) using the superstructure flowsheet developed by Carnegie Mellon University. The presentation serves to emphasize the multi-disciplinary and collaborate nature of developing a circular economy of critical minerals and materials.

Computer program for Video Data Processing System /VDPS/

Video data from spacecraft photographic mission telemetry is scanned to generate digital tape computer program which prints out intensity points, cleans noise and telemetry drop-out, enhances contrast, modifies the picture, and calculates contour lines. The output is converted into new photographic film.

Multi-processing system study

The results are summarized of a multiprocessor systems design review. The systems were reviewed against use in a space station environment. The proposed designs were evaluated from a systems viewpoint in general and from the systems software in particular. The recommendations resulting from this evaluation are anticipated to be considered for the design of a multiprocessing system built around a SUMC. Two multiprocessing system designs were reviewed. The designs reviewed were highly functional and many questions could not be answered. However, several major issues were uncovered which could be evaluated to some detail, and which could greatly impact the SUMC-MP design. The major issues relevant to a multiprocessing system design revolve around the following functions: (1) Storage Management, (2) Processor Management, (3) Intermodule Communication, (4) Memory Access Interference, (5) System Efficiency, and (6) System Recovery/Reliability.

DONAR - A computer processing system to extend ultrasonic pulse-echo testing.

A dedicated general purpose digital computer has been built on the principle of a sampled-data system to run an ultrasonic subsystem under programmed control. A most significant application is the ability to extract a signal from an interfering background. As illustrated in the paper, a 1 mm diameter transducer was used to measure the diameter of a 2.5 mm OD plastics tube with 0.4 mm wall thickness. Echoes from all four surfaces were displayed and the measurements indicated an uncertainty of less than 0.1 mm.

Design, fabrication and testing of a wet oxidation waste processing system

The wet oxidation of sewage sludge during space flight was studied for water and gas recovery, and the elimination of overboard venting. The components of the system are described. Slurry and oxygen supply modules were fabricated and tested. Recommendations for redesign of the equipment are included.

Digital TV processing system

Two digital video data compression systems directly applicable to the Space Shuttle TV Communication System were described: (1) For the uplink, a low rate monochrome data compressor is used. The compression is achieved by using a motion detection technique in the Hadamard domain. To transform the variable source rate into a fixed rate, an adaptive rate buffer is provided. (2) For the downlink, a color data compressor is considered. The compression is achieved first by intra-color transformation of the original signal vector, into a vector which has lower information entropy. Then two-dimensional data compression techniques are applied to the Hadamard transformed components of this last vector. Mathematical models and data reliability analyses were also provided for the above video data compression techniques transmitted over a channel encoded Gaussian channel. It was shown that substantial gains can be achieved by the combination of video source and channel coding.
