Chemical Schemes for Surface Modification of Icy Satellites: A Road Map

The icy Galilean Satellites of Jupiter are subject to magnetospheric plasma ion bombardment which induces chemical changes within the ice. The possible detection of CO2 on the surface of Ganymede by the Galileo spacecraft makes for a more complicatred chemistry and increases the number of chemical compounds that may then be present.

Autonomous Off-road Navigation over Extreme Terrains with Perceptually-challenging Conditions

We propose a framework for resilient autonomous navigation in perceptuallychallenging unknown environments with mobility-stressing elements such asuneven surfaces with rocks and boulders, steep slopes, negative obstacles like cliffsand holes, and narrow passages. Environments are GPS-denied and perceptuallydegradedwith variable lighting from dark to lit and obscurants (dust, fog, smoke).Lack of prior maps and degraded communication eliminates the possibility of prioror off-board computation or operator intervention. This necessitates real-time onboardcomputation using noisy sensor data. To address these challenges, we proposea resilient architecture that exploits redundancy and heterogeneity in sensing modalities.Further resilience is achieved by triggering recovery behaviors upon failure. We propose a fast settling algorithm to generate robust multi-fidelity traversabilityestimates in real-time. The proposed approach was deployed on multiple physicalsystems including skid-steer and tracked robots, high-speed RC car and legged robotsand as a part of Team CoSTAR’s effort to theDARPASubterranean Challenge, wherethe team won 2nd and 1st place in the Tunnel and Urban Circuit, respectively.

The VGOS High Road: From Inception and Prototyping to Operations to Maturation and Beyond

Legacy S/X has been the production system of the IVS since the inception of the service. VGOS was declared operational in 2020 after a visionary journey that involved designing, prototyping, and demonstrating the feasibility of the new observing system to generate high-quality geodetic products. And a fledgling VGOS network of between 8 and 10 stations has been contributing IVS products operationally ever since. That VGOS network had further increased by the end of 2022 to 12 stations, and counting. Currently, the VGOS observing program encompasses the 24-hour VGOS-OPS and VGOS-RD session series; further, a weekdaily VGOS Intensive series has been established (with other VGOS Intensives being set up). In addition to the network, VGOS correlation capabilities have also expanded to try to keep pace with the increased VGOS correlation load, morphing into a multi-center distributed correlator. In this poster, we will provide a status overview of the infrastructure realization efforts of the VGOS station network and the correlation centers as well as plans for a bright VGOS future.

The Road to Endurance: Outcomes From the Endurance Science Workshop

Endurance is a mission concept for a long-range, highly autonomous lunar rover (Fig. 1) designed to explore the farside of the Moon and the largest and oldest (undisputed) impact crater in the Solar System: South Pole–Aitken basin (SPA) (Fig. 2). Endurance would traverse nearly 2,000 kilometers, acquiring a large volume of in situ data, and a large mass of samples (up to 100 kg of material from 12 sites), before rendezvousing with Artemis astronauts at the south pole of the Moon. The Endurance concept was developed during the recent Origins, Worlds, and Life Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey [1–2], which recommended Endurance as the highest priority new strategic mission for NASA’s Lunar Discovery and Exploration Program. Since the release of the Decadal Survey in 2022, NASA has been further studying this concept, and investigating the range of implementation options [3–5].

Monitoring Well Installation Completion Report for Ransom Road Landfill, Vertical Processing Facility, and Environmental Health Facility, Solid Waste Management Units: 003, 077, and 079

The intended purpose of the Monitoring Well Installation project is to support the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Environmental Remediation Department’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Program by installing new monitoring wells. The wells are installed in accordance with the Brevard County Health Department and St. Johns River Water Management Districts rules and guidelines.

Long and Winding Road to Higher Efficiency-The RTU Story: Preprint

Rooftop units (RTUs) and other packaged heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment consume more than four quads of energy annually while conditioning more than 50% of the commercial building floor area in the United States. Historically, these systems have low operating efficiencies and receive infrequent maintenance. In addition, the market has a low first cost, run-to-failure, like-for-like replacement mentality and has been slow to adopt change. This paper explores the broad market transformation that has resulted in higher efficiencies and tremendous energy savings. Although there are many factors in this market transformation, this paper highlights: research behind advancements in components and controls; adoption of an operational efficiency metric; raising the bar for high efficiency with the RTU Challenge; market barriers overcome through the Advanced RTU Campaign; upstream and midstream incentive programs and HVAC distribution networks; alignment of the market efficiency drivers of ASHRAE Standard 90.1, federal minimum efficiency standards, the ENERGY STAR® program, and the Consortium for Energy Efficiency's (CEE's) efficiency tiers. Measures of the market transformation include more than 50% increase in RTU efficiencies, more than 1 billion kWh saved and 160,000 RTUs upgraded with high-efficiency measures by the Advanced RTU Campaign partners, large increases of high-efficiency RTUs purchased through incentive programs, and the largest energy savings from any federal minimum standards action. Although these results are impressive, the market transformation is just beginning, and there remain exciting opportunities for improvements in equipment efficiencies and improved operating performance with advanced controls and fault detection and diagnostics.
