Simultaneous calculation of aircraft design loads and structural member sizes

A design process which accounts for the interaction between aerodynamic loads and changes in member sizes during sizing of aircraft structures is described. A simultaneous iteration procedure is used wherein both design loads and member sizes are updated during each cycle yielding converged, compatible loads and member sizes. A description is also given of a system of programs which incorporates this process using lifting surface theory to calculate aerodynamic pressure distributions, using a finite-element method for structural analysis, and using a fully stressed design technique to size structural members. This system is tailored to perform the entire process with computational efficiency in a single computer run so that it can be used effectively during preliminary design. Selected results, considering maneuver, taxi, and fatigue design conditions, are presented to illustrate convergence characteristics of this iterative procedure.

Simultaneous measurement of the horizontal components of the earth's electric field in the atmosphere and in the ionosphere

Simultaneous measurements have been made of the ionospheric electric field at altitudes above 100 km (with rockets and radar) and of the atmospheric electric field at an altitude of about 30 km (with balloons). These results show that the horizontal components of the electric field at 30 km were essentially equal to the ionospheric electric field, as has been argued previously on theoretical grounds.

A simultaneous spin/eject mechanism for aerospace payloads

A simultaneous spin/eject mechanism was developed for aerospace applications requiring a compact, passive device which would accommodate payload support and controlled-release functions, and which would provide a highly accurate spin-ejection motion to the payload. The mechanism satisfied the requirements and is adaptable to other deployment applications.

Diagonalization and simultaneous symmetrization of the gas-dynamic matrices

The hyperbolic nature of the unsteady, inviscid, gas-dynamic equations implies the existence of a similarity transformation for diagonalizing an arbitrary linear combination of coefficient matrices. It is shown that the individual matrices are simultaneously symmetrized by the similarity transformation. The transformations and their norms can be applied to the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem, linear stability theory for finite-difference approximations, and simplification of block-tridiagonal systems that arise in implicit time-split algorithms.

Coordinated ATS 5 electron flux and simultaneous auroral observations

An attempt is made to correlate ATS 5 plasma data with all-sky photographic data taken at Thompson and Gillam, Manitoba. The fields of view of the Canadian stations cover the projected field line position of the satellite. Trapped electron fluxes at the satellite and the simultaneously measured auroral activity near the projected foot of the satellite field line were compared for several days of varying substorm activity with all-sky camera data, which was in the form of time-varying luminosity plots. The observed auroral intensification coincident with plasma injection shows that on a broad scale the auroras are correlated well with the magnetospheric trapped plasma; however, there is a lack of detailed correlation between the fine structure of the trapped plasma fluxes and the small scale auroral features.

Simultaneous radio and optical observations of UV Ceti-type flare stars

The UV Ceti-type stars, YZ Canis Minoris, AD Leonis, and Wolf 424 AB, were monitored for 57.8 hours from January 15 to February 22, 1974, using the 1000-foot (305-m) radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and the 91-cm or 76-cm reflector at McDonald Observatory. Radio observations were made at frequencies of 430, 318, and 196 MHz, and optical monitoring was done in the Johnson U or B band, the Stromgren u band, or white light. During the period of simultaneous observations, 62 optical flares were detected. A total of 13 RF flares were independently identified, of which 10 reached maximum flux within 10 min of the peak time of an optical flare. Using times of optical-flare events as reference data, an additional 15 cases of radio enhancements associated with optical flares are identified. The most probable delay interval between the optical-flare maximum and 318-MHz radio peak was found to be 0 to 5 min, with the optical flare occurring first. Aside from this statistical delay of peak occurrence and a general tendency for radio and optical flares to be associated, no systematic correlations of optical and radio amplitudes or morphology were found. The possible consequences of the radio emission's being due to a coherent process are discussed.

The interpretation of simultaneous soft X-ray spectroscopic and imaging observations of an active region

Simultaneous soft X-ray spectroscopic and broad-band imaging observations of an active region have been analyzed together to determine the parameters which describe the coronal plasma. From the spectroscopic data, models of temperature-emission measure-elemental abundance have been constructed which provide acceptable statistical fits. By folding these possible models through the imaging analysis, models which are not self-consistent can be rejected. In this way, only the oxygen, neon, and iron abundances of Pottasch (1967), combined with either an isothermal or exponential temperature-emission-measure model, are consistent with both sets of data. Contour maps of electron temperature and density for the active region have been constructed from the imaging data. The implications of the analysis for the determination of coronal abundances and for future satellite experiments are discussed.

Comparison of simultaneous magnetotail and polar ionospheric electric fields and energetic particles

DC electric fields and solar electrons were simultaneously measured by the Apollo 15 subsatellite in the earth's magnetotail at lunar orbital distance and by rocket and balloon experiments in the polar ionosphere. The magnetotail and polar ionosphere transverse electric fields are found generally to agree in magnitude and direction. The electron spectra from 0.5 to 200 keV are essentially identical, indicating that the potential difference due to parallel electric fields between the magnetotail and the rocket located in the polar ionosphere did not exceed approximately 500 V during the time of the measurements.

Simultaneous observations of field-aligned currents and particle fluxes in the post-midnight sector

The paper presents several examples of simultaneous measurements of electrons and positive ions (5 eV to 15 eV) and of magnetic field perturbations due to field-aligned currents made on the polar-orbiting ISIS-2 satellite at 1400 km altitude in the early morning local time (MLT) sector. There is a good general correspondence between changes in the gradient of the E-W component of the magnetic field along the spacecraft orbit and changes in the character of the low-energy electron fluxes. The equatorward region of outward current flow in this post-midnight sector is spatially coincident with the isotropic precipitation associated with the low-altitude plasma sheet. In cases examined, electron current density always exceeds positive ion current density by a factor of 10 and usually by a factor of over 100.

Performance correlations of five solar collectors tested simultaneously outdoors

Collector thermal efficiency, and efficiency degradation with time were measured for 5 flat-plate solar collectors tested simultaneously in an outdoor solar collector test facility. Results indicate that by using collector performance parameters which account for diffuse isolation, outdoor data recorded on cloud days can be used as a measure of performance, as long as the ratio of direct to total insolation exceeds approximately 0.6. These outdoor results also show good agreement with thermal efficiency data obtained indoors in a solar simulator. Significant efficiency degradation occurred on only one of the five collectors exposed to outdoor conditions for a period of one to two years.

Summer performance results obtained from simultaneously testing ten solar collectors outdoors

Ten solar collectors were simultaneously tested outdoors. Efficiency data were correlated using a method that separates solar variables (flux, incident angle) from the desired performance parameters (heat loss, absorbtance, transmittance) which are unique to a given collector design. Tests were conducted on both clear and moderately cloudy days. Correlating data in the above manner, a 2-glass, black paint collector exhibited a decrease in efficiency of 5 percentage points relative to the baseline data for an exposure time of 2 years, 4 months. Condensation on the collector glazing was thought to be a contributing factor in this efficiency change.

Simultaneous holographic and photocurrent studies of the photorefractive effect in LiTaO3 and LiNbO3

In reduced LiNbO3:Mn both the photorefractive sensitivity and the simultaneously measured photocurrent result from drift with a polarization-dependent effective 'internal field' of about 6 kV/cm. In reduced undoped LiTaO3 the observed difference in applied fields of the minimum photorefractive sensitivity and zero photocurrent imply charge transport is by a mechanism that cannot be completely described by diffusion and drift in an electric field. The direct measurement of the harmonic content of phase gratings written in several LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 crystals shows termination of charge-transport results from the space-charge field of the hologram.

Simultaneous Pc 1 observations by the synchronous satellite ATS-1 and ground stations - Implications concerning IPDP generation mechanisms

Results are presented for an experimental study designed to examine the properties of Pc 1 activity observed simultaneously at ATS 1 and two Canadian ground stations. The Pc 1 activity is found to follow substorm expansion phase onsets and to occur most frequently at dusk. Dynamic spectra waves at both ground stations are that of IPDP (Intervals of Pulsations Diminishing by Period) type Pc 1. A previously proposed mechanism to explain IPDP generation, which required a rapid increase in the equatorial magnetic field to produce IPDP, is inconsistent with the dynamic spectra and magnetic field observations. Either purely azimuthal or a combination of azimuthal and radial inward drift of energetic resonant protons is an equally plausible mechanism to explain IPDP generation.

Simultaneous observations of substorm electrons - Explorer 45 and ATS 5

Simultaneous observations of substorm-associated electron flux variations made on the satellites Explorer 45 and ATS 5 are used to infer the value of the dawn-dusk electric field present during a substorm. The observations were made during a substorm which occurred on December 17, 1971, while the two satellites were in the evening local time sector, within the plasma sheet. It is found that a dawn-dusk electric field of about 11 kV/R-E (about 2 mV/m) was present during the substorm. It is shown that the observations made at the two satellites are compatible with the model of a uniform enhanced dawn-dusk electric field acting upon a particle source which is spatially uniform in the region from which particles are convected to synchronous orbit.

Auroral energy deposition and neutral composition changes observed simultaneously by ESRO 4 and AE-C at different altitudes

Neutral composition data obtained simultaneously from ESRO 4 and AE-C during geomagnetically disturbed conditions at different altitudes (160 and 230 km) are used to investigate the atmospheric response to geomagnetic storms and to infer information regarding the excitation mechanism. The data are compared with a theoretical model that estimates the composition effects in terms of wind induced diffusion. A parametric study was conducted bearing on the influence of energy deposition at different altitudes and with varying latitudinal extent. In one of the observed events the composition effects at 160 km are substantially smaller than at 230 km for which we inferred by comparison with the theory that the energy mainly was deposited at 150 km altitude over a wide latitude range. Another event required energy deposition at somewhat lower altitudes near 120 km with a more localized energy source. Significant variations of the turbopause level were not necessary to explain the observed variations.

Simultaneous in situ magnetospheric and ionospheric detection of detached plasmas

On January 19, 1972, in situ measurements by Explorer 45, orbiting in the magnetosphere near the equatorial plane, and ISIS 2, in a circular polar orbit at 1400 km, simultaneously detected patches of enhanced ionization outside the main body of the plasmasphere. The magnetospheric plasma region extended between (geomagnetic latitude) L values 3.4-4.8 and the ionospheric electron density enhancement extended between L values 3.6-4.4. The two plasma features were detected near 22 hours magnetic local time (MLT). Based on a number of observations, it is inferred that the plasma density enhancement persisted for more than 5 hours and extended over at least 2 hours in MLT near L = 5. These results provide experimental evidence that some detached magnetospheric plasma regions are signatures of a flux tube containing enhanced ionization throughout a volume extending from the topside ionosphere out to the equator.

Simultaneous measurements of ozone outside and inside cabins of two B-747 airliners and a Gates Learjet business jet

The average amount of ozone measured in the cabins of two B-747 airliners varied from 40 percent to 80 percent of the atmospheric concentrations without special ozone destruction systems. A charcoal filter in the cabin air inlet system of one B-747 reduced the ozone to about 5 percent of the atmospheric concentration. A Learjet 23 was also instrumented with monitors to measure simultaneously the atmospheric and ozone concentrations. Results indicate that a significant portion of the atmospheric ozone is not destroyed in the pressurization system and remains in the aircraft cabin of the Learjet. For the two cabin configurations tested, the ozone retentions were 63 and 41 percent of the atmospheric ozone concentrations. Ozone concentrations measured in the cabin near the conditioned-air outlets were reduced only slightly from atmospheric ozone concentrations. It is concluded that a constant difference between ozone concentrations inside and outside the cabin does not exist.
