Promotion and Tuning of the Electrochemical Reduction of Hetero‐ and Homobimetallic Zinc Complexes**

Abstract Compounds containing multiple metals attract significant interest due to the useful redox and reactivity properties of such species. Here, the electrochemical properties of a family of macrocyclic complexes that feature a zinc(II) center paired with a secondary redox‐inactive metal cation in heterobimetallic (Na + , Ca 2+ , Nd 3+ , Y 3+ ) motifs or homobimetallic (Zn 2+ ) motifs have been investigated. The new complexes were prepared via a divergent strategy, isolated, and structurally characterized with single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. XRD results show that the structures of the complexes are modulated by the identity of the incorporated secondary metal ions. Cyclic voltammetry data reveal that ligand‐centered reduction is promoted in the bimetallic complexes and that the paired metal ions synergistically influence the redox properties of the complexes. Similar to prior work from our group and others, the bimetallic complexes containing stronger Lewis acids undergo more significant reduction potential shifts; contrasting with prior work on complexes containing redox‐active metals, however, the zinc(II) complexes studied here display faster electron transfer (as judged by lower reorganization energies, λ) when incorporating di‐ or tri‐valent Lewis acids in contrast to monovalent (and more weakly acidic) sodium. The quantified trends in these data offer insights that could help distinguish metal‐ versus ligand‐centered reduction of bimetallic complexes.

Multipurpose Energetic Materials by Shuffling Nitro Groups on a 3,3′‐Bipyrazole Moiety

Abstract A family of 3,3′‐bipyrazole‐based energetic compounds having C‐NO 2 /N‐NO 2 functionalities was synthesized by using various nitrating conditions. These nitro derivatives of bipyrazole are significantly more dense and energetic compared to the corresponding nitropyrazole analogues while maintaining the desired thermal stability and sensitivity. Depending on the number and nature of energetic nitro groups (C‐NO 2 /N‐NO 2 ), different classes of energetic materials, such as green primary explosives, high‐performance secondary explosives and heat‐resistant explosives, were obtained. All the compounds were thoroughly characterized by IR, NMR [ 1 H, 13 C{ 1 H}, 15 N], elemental analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Four were also structurally characterized with single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction studies. Heats of formation and detonation performance were calculated using Gaussian 03 and EXPLO5 v6.01 programs, respectively.

Synthesis, Electronic Properties and Reactivity of [B 12 X 11 (NO 2 )] 2– (X=F–I) Dianions

Nitro-functionalized undecahalogenated closo-dodecaborates [B 12 X 11 (NO 2 )] 2– were synthesized in high purities and characterized by NMR, IR, and Raman spectroscopy, single crystal X-diffraction, mass spectrometry, and gas-phase ion vibrational spectroscopy. The NO 2 substituent leads to an enhanced electronic and electrochemical stability compared to the parent perhalogenated [B 12 X 12 ] 2– (X=F–I) dianions evidenced by photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and quantum-chemical calculations. The stabilizing effect decreases from X=F to X=I. Thermogravimetric measurements of the salts indicate the loss of the nitric oxide radical (NO . ). The homolytic NO . elimination from the dianion under very soft collisional excitation in gas-phase ion experiments results in the formation of the radical [B 12 X 11 O] 2–. . Theoretical investigations suggest that the loss of NO . proceeds via the rearrangement product [B 12 X 11 (ONO)] 2– . The O-bonded nitrosooxy structure is thermodynamically more stable than the N-bonded nitro structure and its formation by radical recombination of [B 12 X 11 O] 2–. and NO . is demonstrated.

Organo‐Functionalized Lacunary Double Cubane‐Type Oxometallates: Synthesis, Structure, and Properties of [(M II Cl) 2 (V IV O) 2 {((HOCH 2 CH 2 )(H)N(CH 2 CH 2 O))(HN(CH 2 CH 2 O) 2 )} 2 ] (M=Co, Zn)

Abstract Organofunctionalized tetranuclear clusters [(M II Cl) 2 (V IV O) 2 {((HOCH 2 CH 2 )(H)N(CH 2 CH 2 O))(HN(CH 2 CH 2 O) 2 )} 2 ] (1, M=Co,2: M=Zn) containing an unprecedented oxometallacyclic {M 2 V 2 Cl 2 N 4 O 8 } (M=Co, Zn) framework have been prepared by solvothermal reactions. The new oxo‐alkoxide compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods, magnetic susceptibility measurement, DFT and ab initio computational methods, and complete single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction structure analysis. The isostructural clusters are formed of edge‐sharing octahedral {VO 5 N} and trigonal bipyramidal {MO 3 NCl} units. Diethanolamine ligates the bimetallic lacunary double cubane core of1and2in an unusual two‐mode fashion, unobserved previously. In the crystalline state, the clusters of1and2are joined by hydrogen bonds to form a three‐dimensional network structure. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate weakly antiferromagnetic interactions between the vanadium centers [J iso (V IV −V IV )=−5.4(1); −3.9(2) cm −1 ], and inequivalent antiferromagnetic interactions between the cobalt and vanadium centers [J iso (V IV −Co II )=−12.6 and −7.5 cm −1 ] contained in1.

High‐pressure Synthesis of Cobalt Polynitrides: Unveiling Intriguing Crystal Structures and Nitridation Behavior

Abstract In this study, we conduct extensive high‐pressure experiments to investigate phase stability in the cobalt‐nitrogen system. Through a combination of synthesis in a laser‐heated diamond anvil cell, first‐principles calculations, Raman spectroscopy, and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, we establish the stability fields of known high‐pressure phases, hexagonal NiAs‐type CoN, and marcasite‐type CoN 2 within the pressure range of 50–90 GPa. We synthesize and characterize previously unknown nitrides, Co 3 N 2 ,Pnma‐CoN and two polynitrides, CoN 3 and CoN 5 , within the pressure range of 90–120 GPa. Both polynitrides exhibit novel types of polymeric nitrogen chains and networks. CoN 3 feature branched‐type nitrogen trimers (N 3 ) and CoN 5 show π‐bonded nitrogen chain. As the nitrogen content in the cobalt nitride increases, the CoN 6 polyhedral frameworks transit from face‐sharing (in CoN) to edge‐sharing (in CoN 2 and CoN 3 ), and finally to isolated (in CoN 5 ). Our study provides insights into the intricate interplay between structure evolution, bonding arrangements, and high‐pressure synthesis in polynitrides, expanding the knowledge for the development of advanced energy materials

Crystallography Reveals Metal‐Triggered Restructuring of β‐Hairpins

Abstract Metal binding to β‐sheets occurs in many metalloproteins and is also implicated in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease. De novo designed metallo‐β‐sheets have been pursued as models and mimics of these proteins. However, no crystal structures of canonical β‐sheet metallopeptides have yet been obtained, in stark contrast to many examples for ɑ‐helical metallopeptides, leading to a poor understanding for their chemistry. To address this, we have engineered tryptophan zippers, stable 12‐residue β‐sheet peptides, to bind Cu(II) ions and obtained crystal structures through single crystal X‐ray diffraction (SC‐XRD). We find that metal binding triggers several unexpected supramolecular assemblies that demonstrate the range of higher‐order structures available to metallo‐β‐sheets. Overall, these findings underscore the importance of crystallography in elucidating the rich structural landscape of metallo‐β‐sheet peptides.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization and Chemical Bonding of Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and its Quaternary Derivatives with Eu and Alkaline Earth Metal (Mg, Ca, Ba) Substitutions. A Tale of Seven Li‐Containing Stannides and Two Complex Crystal Structures

In this paper, we discuss the synthesis and the structural characterization of the new ternary compound Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and its six quaternary derivatives, where alkaline earth metals (Ca, Mg, Ba) and the rare earth metal Eu are substituted, yielding crystalline phases of monoclinic or orthorhombic symmetry. The title compounds were synthesized via high‐temperature solid‐state reactions of the corresponding elements. The crystal structures were determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction methods. The (Sr,Ca) 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and Eu 7 (Mg,Li) 6 Sn 12 phases represent a new structure type (space group P 2/ m , No. 10) while Sr 7 Li 6 Sn 12 and the rest of the title phases crystallize in the orthorhombic base‐centered space group Cmmm (No. 65) which is similar to the Eu 7 Li 8– x Sn 10+ x ( x ≈ 2.0) phase with the Ce 7 Li 8 Ge 10 structure type (Pearson code oC 50). Careful examination of the resulting structures shows intricate disordering between Li and Sn atoms, which is governed by the total number of valence electrons. The discussion of experimental results is also supported by DFT electronic structure calculations.

Unique Aluminum Clusters Stabilized by Cation‐Ligand Cooperativity

Abstract Two novel cyclic Al 3 clusters, Li 2 [Al 3 (PR 2 ) 6 ] ⋅ 2(Et 2 O) [R=Ph ( 1 ), Cy ( 2 )] were synthesized through salt metathesis of metastable AlCl ⋅ (Et 2 O) n solutions with LiPR 2 . Both complexes were characterized by single crystal X‐Ray diffraction and their solid state and electronic structures are compared to previously reported cyclic Al 3 clusters. Compounds 1 and 2 were further characterized using density functional theory (DFT) methods to understand the nature of the free electron and the three‐center two‐electron Al−Al bonds. Calculations revealed that both clusters are influenced by pseudo Jahn‐Teller distortion and are likely in equilibrium between two low energy bonding states. The solid‐state structures of 1 and 2 are unique among Al 3 clusters, while the electronic structure is similar to the previously reported [Si t 4 Al 3 ]. In aluminum chemistry, 1 and 2 are rare examples of clusters containing isoelectronic cores in different ligand environments. The effects of the phosphide ligand sphere and strongly coordinated lithium atoms are discussed in detail.

Tetrazolyl Triazolotriazine: A New Insensitive High Explosive

A triazolotriazine carbonitrile ( 1 ) was formed by diazotization of 3–amino–5–cyano–1,2,4–triazole followed by treatment with nitroacetonitrile. Cyclization of the C≡N bond with sodium azide results in a tetrazolyl triazolotriazine ( 2 ). Formation of the sodium salt of 2 , followed by metathesis with [PPN][Cl] resulted in the organic salt 3 . Compounds 1 , 2 , and 3 were characterized by elemental analysis and infrared, 1 H, and 13 C{ 1 H} NMR spectroscopy and 1 and 3 were characterized by single–crystal X–ray diffraction. Compound 2 has a density of 1.819 g cm –1 , is thermally stable up to 305 °C, and is insensitive to impact, friction, and electrical discharge. The detonation pressure and velocity of 2 are calculated to be 27.04 GPa and 8.312 km s –1 , respectively, making this a 1,3,5–triamino–2,4,6–trinitrobenzene (TATB) replacement candidate.

First Full Structural Characterization of Chloro Formamidinium Salts

While the synthesis of chloro formamidinium chloride has been known for over one century, no solid‐state structure of a chlorine‐substituted formamidinium compound has been reported up to now. Herein, we describe syntheses, solid‐state structures, and vibrational properties of four chloro formamidinium compounds, namely [ClC(NH 2 ) 2 ]Cl ( 1 ), [ClC(NH 2 ) 2 ](AuCl 4 ) ( 2 ), [ClC(NH 2 ) 2 ] 2 (PdCl 4 ) ( 3 ), and [ClC(NH 2 ) 2 ] 2 (PtCl 6 ) ( 4 ), as determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD). 1 and 3 crystallize in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 / c , 2 in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn , whereas 4 adopts the triclinic space group P 1 . By using a combination of high‐resolution time‐of‐flight neutron powder diffraction, state‐of‐the‐art DFT calculations as well as IR spectroscopy, the prior SCXRD result was fully confirmed and augmented by determining the hydrogen‐bonded molecular networks. First‐principles electronic‐structure calculations corroborate the ionic nature of these salts by showing very flat, molecular‐like bands next to the Fermi level, in addition to indirect bandgaps. This study underlines the upmost importance of complementing diffraction data by ab initio calculations, as theory‐derived anisotropic displacement parameters served as fixed numerical entries.

The Crystal Structure of BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 Featuring Brownmillerite‐Type Layers

Abstract A bimetallic hydroxychalcogenide, BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 , was synthesized through hydrothermal pouch methods. The single crystal X‐ray diffraction and electron diffraction indicates that the phase crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma and is composed of anionic layers [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] − that are separated and charged balanced by Ba 2+ cations. The [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] – layer comprises two unique Zn sites, which form interpenetrating zigzag chains with an in‐plane dipole moment and adopts a brownmillerite‐type structural motif. The adjacent layers contain tetrahedrally coordinated Zn chains of opposite handedness related by an inversion center, which cancel the microscopic dipoles to minimize the macroscopic electric polarization. The adoption of a brownmillerite structural motif in BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 can be rationalized by the distinct charge difference between Se 2− and OH − anions, which creates a sufficient dipole moment in the ZnSe 3 (OH) tetrahedra to allow the occurrence of twisted chains. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the existence of OH − anions and DFT calculations indicate that BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap. This work expands the chemistry of the brownmillerite family from traditional homoanionic oxides to multianion hydroxychalcogenides, offering a new opportunity to explore tunable structural complexity for better design of functional materials.

Octahedral Distortion and Excitonic Behavior of Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 Halide Perovskite at Low Temperature

The metal halide ionic octahedron, represented as [MX 6 ] $n$- (M = metal cation, X = halide anion), serves as the basic structural unit in halide perovskites and plays a crucial role in determining their optoelectronic and chemical properties. Thus, it is possible to correlate the responses of metal halide perovskites to various environmental stimuli with the dynamic behaviors of the [MX 6 ] $n$- octahedra. In this study, with the temperature-dependent single-crystal X ray diffraction (SCXRD) measurements on Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 2D halide perovskites, we can identify two classes of distortions through the lowering of temperature: intraoctahedral distortion, which is the off-centering of Bi 3+ cation within a [BiBr 6 ] 3– octahedron due to the Bi 3+ 6s 2 lone pair electrons, and interoctahedral distortion, which is the collective misalignments among the [BiBr 6 ] 3– building blocks. Free exciton (FE) and self-trapped exciton (STE) models are used to study the relationship between the distortion of octahedra in Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 and the corresponding changes in its optoelectronic properties, which transform from dominating blue emission above 100 K to red emission at 4 K. In conclusion, this work provides new insights into the excitonic behaviors of perovskites and suggests a possibility that we can design and rationalize the optical properties of halide perovskites by regulating the environmental stimuli based on the knowledge of behaviors of the individual [MX 6 ] $n$- building blocks.
