Resilient Autonomous Wind Farms: Preprint

With the advent of an increasing number of control strategies that seek to optimize wind turbine performance on a farm-level, taking account of individual wind turbine information to achieve wind farm-level objectives has become an increasingly important goal. Methods for controlling wind turbines on an individual and farm level have seen significant development, and an abundance of new implementations for gathering and using data from turbines have created potential for novel control mechanisms which can further optimize the performance and delivery characteristics of a wind farm. A key element of making these wind farms more efficient is to develop reliable algorithms that use local sensor information that is already being collected, such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data, local meteorological stations, and nearby radars/sodars/lidars. Making use of information from all wind turbines in a wind farm can enable such approaches as determining the atmospheric conditions across the farm, improving fault-finding, and enabling more efficient overall control of farm-wide optimizations through mechanisms such as wake-steering. However, these approaches typically involve a centralized communications and control center. In order to ensure the resilient operation of the farm, it is necessary to develop an approach which distributes the calculation and communication amongst multiple nodes throughout the farm. In this fashion, a redundant, robust, and secure network can be created, which can tolerate faults in calculation, communication, and even external attacks which seek to disrupt the operation of the wind farm. This paper introduces the use of the Raft Byzantine Fault Tolerance algorithm in the implementation of autonomous control of a wind farm. This implementation will allow for fault tolerance for malfunctioning nodes, sensors, transmitters, and connectors. This approach is equally extensible to account for malicious actors. It will be shown to achieve overall consensus, provided the number of faults/malicious nodes is less than 3$n$+1, where $n$ is the number of turbine cluster faults which may occur, and to be robust in the face of multiple arbitrary faults.

One step removed shadow network

A system and method includes an operational network that communicates with an external network by opening a first transmission protocol socket. A data diode coupled to the operational network and a gateway enables the one-way transfer of all information received from the external network and transmitted by the operational network to the gateway such that no information travels from the gateway to the operational network or the external network. The gateway opens a second transmission protocol socket by mapping a sequence number to an acknowledgement number and increasing that mapped acknowledgement number by a value of one. A transmitter then transmits the acknowledgment to a remote network or a gateway.

Artificial Linear Brush Abrasion of Coatings for Photovoltaic Module First Surfaces

Natural soiling and the subsequent requisite cleaning of photovoltaic (PV) modules result in abrasion damage to the cover glass. The durability of the front glass has important economic consequences, including determining the use of anti-reflective and/or anti-soiling coatings as well as the method and frequency of operational maintenance (cleaning). Artificial linear brush abrasion using Nylon 6/12 bristles was therefore examined to explore the durability of representative PV first-surfaces, i.e., the surface of a module incident to direct solar radiation. Specimens examined include silane surface functionalized-, roughened (etched)-, porous silica-coated-, fluoropolymer-coated-, and ceramic (TiO2 or ZrO2/SiO2/ZrO2/SiO2)-coated-glass, which are compared to monolithic-poly(methyl methacrylate) and -glass coupons. Characterization methods used in this study include: optical microscopy, ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-VIS-NIR) spectroscopy, sessile drop goniometry, white-light interferometry, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and depth-profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The corresponding characteristics examined include: surface morphology, transmittance (i.e., optical performance), surface energy (water contact angle), surface roughness, scratch width and depth, and chemical composition, respectively. The study here was performed to determine coating failure modes; identify characterization methods that can detect nascent failures; compare the durability of popular contemporary coating materials; identify their corresponding damage characteristics; and compare slurry and dry-dust abrasion. This study will also aid in developing an abrasion standard for the PV industry.

Performance Evaluation of High-Temperature Ultrasonic Communication System

Ultrasonic communication is a technique that allows transmitting information through a solid material such as tubes or bars using high-frequency elastic waves. The communication channels often extend into a high-temperature range in the field of power, oil, or nuclear industry. When the temperature is taken into consideration, the ultrasonic wave propagation through the solid channel is complex and unpredictable. It is necessary to study the influence of temperature on the ultrasonic guided wave to improve ultrasonic communication. In this study, a temperature control system is assembled to adjust the temperature of a steel pipe channel ranging from room temperature to 150 degrees C. The temperature performance evaluation is conducted to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER) of transferring the ultrasonic signal. The work aims to develop a reliable ultrasonic communication system in a high-temperature environment. The system temperature can be maintained at 150 degrees C and the LiNbO3 transducers are used as transmitters and receivers. No power amplifier is used in the communication system. The high-temperature ultrasonic communication system (HT-UCS) is feasible at 150 degrees C and can achieve a bit rate of 10 kbps without any error.

A Custom High-Throughput Optical Mapping Instrument (OMI) for Accelerated Stress Testing of PV Module Materials

The performance and integrity of photovoltaic (PV) modules and materials may be assessed through optical characterizations. We have developed a custom Optical Mapping Instrument (OMI) to improve measurement throughput time, facilitate automated measurements, and obtain spatial information relative to commercial benchtop spectrophotometer instruments. Both the key components and the methods used to improve the measurements are described. The measurement precision for the OMI is benchmarked for hemispherical transmittance relative to a previous round-robin study for commercial spectrophotometers. Example mapping measurements and their implications are given for specimens from other studies, including: (1) the depletion of the UV absorber is revealed for specimens beyond a certain size after standardized artificial ultraviolet (UV) weathering, (2) an optical degradation by internal haze formation is confirmed following Damp Heat (85°C/85% relative humidity) testing, (3) the better uniformity of the wear pattern for falling sand abrasion is used to select the DIN 52348 fixture over the ASTM D968 fixture, and (4) the local (millimeter-scale) heterogeneity of surface contamination in the soiling-prone location of Dubai relative to Kuwait. The results of the UV study have already been used to improve the standardized weathering of encapsulants. The example for Damp Heat testing is given to increase awareness of a degradation believed to be ubiquitously occurring in safety and design-type qualification testing of PV modules.

Simultaneous classical and quantum communication scheme based on coherent detection

An improved coherent communication scheme is provided. The coherent communication scheme encodes both classical and quantum information simultaneously using isolated groups of states: classical information is represented by different groups and can be decoded deterministically; and quantum information is represented by highly overlapped states within the same group, thus guaranteeing security. Decoding includes projecting the detection results at the receiver to one of the distinguishable encoding groups first, which allows the classical information to be read out, and then generating a quantum key from the residual randomness. This communications scheme enables simultaneous classical communication and QKD over the same communication channel using the same transmitter and receiver, opening the door to operate QKD in the background of classical communication and at negligible costs.

Progress on the National Solar Radiation Data Base (NSRDB): A new DNI computation

This study introduces a new technique to compute direct normal irradiance (DNI) for improving the National Solar Radiation Data Base (NSRDB). A finite-surface integration algorithm is developed to compute solar radiation in differential solid angles and efficiently infer its contribution to a surface perpendicular to the solar direction. A lookup table of cloud bi-directional transmittance distribution function (BTDF) is developed by use of the discrete ordinates radiative transfer (DISORT) model for possible solar and observing directions and various cloud optical and microphysical properties. In each solar incident direction, DNI is given by the cloud BTDFs from approximately 200 differential solid angles. The simulated DNI is calibrated and evaluated using surface observations at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) Solar Energy Research Laboratory (SRRL) and the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) facility.

Long-haul high rate quantum key distribution

Multiple bit values can be encoded on a single photon in a quantum key distribution (QKD) system using a plurality of sidebands of an optical carrier frequency. Computational and conjugate bases can be defined, and photons decoded based on a selected state from either basis. If n sidebands are available, as many as log2n bits can be encoded on a single photon. Errors in detected bit values due to selection of an incorrect basis state or other errors can be at least partially corrected by bit distillation to identity bit strings for which a transmitter and a receiver record the same values, without insecure transmission of these values.

High-sensitivity gas-mapping 3D imager and method of operation

Measurement apparatuses and methods are disclosed for generating high-precision and -accuracy gas concentration maps that can be overlaid with 3D topographic images by rapidly scanning one or several modulated laser beams with a spatially-encoded transmitter over a scene to build-up imagery. Independent measurements of the topographic target distance and path-integrated gas concentration are combined to yield a map of the path-averaged concentration between the sensor and each point in the image. This type of image is particularly useful for finding localized regions of elevated (or anomalous) gas concentration making it ideal for large-area leak detection and quantification applications including: oil and gas pipeline monitoring, chemical processing facility monitoring, and environmental monitoring.
