Virtual Assistant for First Responders Using Natural Language Understanding and Optical Character Recognition

Commercial deep learning capabilities are available for many applications such as computer vision processing and intelligent chat bots. The Google Cloud Platform product Google Dialogflow provides lifelike conversational artificial intelligence (AI) using machine learning (ML) to generate natural conversations between computers and humans. This ML utilizes natural language understanding (NLU) to recognize a user’s intent and extracts key information into a form of entities. We have developed a user-friendly application through understanding the hazardous material database, first aid safety guidelines and observing the process of first responders who access this information in the field. We created the Trusted and Explainable Artificial Intelligence for Saving Lives (TruePAL) virtual assistant using Dialogflow1 and TensorFlow2 paired with EasyOCR.3 The chatbot supports first responders by providing voice interaction which helps limit additional steps such as browsing through multiple categories when searching for information. Using feedback from our field interviews, the voice interface has been developed to enable the first responder to focus on the immediate emergency. With less distractions, the first responder is able to engage the incident more effectively. The partial hands-free TruePAL chatbot assistant improves the accessibility to the correct guidance by an average of 1.9 seconds compared to the widely used application, NIH WISER, which requires full attention to operate. We combined this intelligent chatbot with a separate visual processing capability to produce hazardous signage analysis and generate the proper guidance for first responders. With the evolving functionality of AI tools, the use of virtual assistants in first responder technology will be an advancement, benefiting the safety of both first responders and civilians.

Future Lunar Surface Network Study: Final Project Report-Unlimited Data Rights

Nokia of America Corporation (Nokia) powered by the research and innovation of Nokia Bell Labs, is honored to have been asked by NASA to conduct a Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) study to evaluate an Initial Operating Capability (IOC) for a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)-based future lunar surface communication network for the Artemis Program. In particular, the SE&I study has focused on developing an architecture and a 3GPP-based network solution that meets the requirements of the Artemis V mission and at the same time can be evolved and expanded to meet the needs and requirements of future missions in the Moon to Mars program. Nokia strongly believes that 3GPP-based communications and networking solutions present the most effective and future-proof technological path for advanced lunar surface communications (and beyond) for the next decades. 3GPP technologies (whether 4G, 5G or 6G in the future) have revolutionized voice, video, and data transmissions on Earth in consumer, enterprise, and industrial applications, and continue to enable significant gains in productivity, efficiency, and safety. The same benefits can be harnessed for space missions and the future lunar economy including, but not limited to the Artemis program. 3GPP technologies will revolutionize lunar surface communications by increasing data-rates, reducing latency, and providing critical voice, video and data communication capabilities across large surface areas while meeting the stringent reliability requirements of human-rated space flight missions.

Communications System Concept of Operations (ConOp) for Supporting Second Shift (SS) Operations

Wildland fires take place most often in remote areas without access to communications infrastructure. Communication during wildfire operations is crucial for safe and effective command and control of air assets, ground-based firefighters, and fire management. Without connectivity, Incident Command (IC) cannot exchange information, receive alerts or work with all parties involved in the wildfire suppression operation. Current policy directs IC to use voice radio communications, which require no prior infrastructure, to provide information needed for the command, control and safety of personnel and resources. Cellular communications are used only for logistical purposes unless no other method is available. To address some of the shortcomings of the current state of communications, the Advanced Capabilities for Emergency Response Operations (ACERO) Second Shift (SS) technical team is developing characteristics of an air-to-ground Mesh Radio System (MRS) and preparing for a future demonstration. The MRS will allow air and ground assets to automatically join a radio network without relying on existing infrastructure and exchange information critical to maintaining situation awareness and air traffic management by the onsite IC. The MRS will also give users more options for communications in addition to voice communications.

Electronic dummy for acoustical testing

Electronic Dummy /ED/ used for acoustical testing represents the average male torso from the Xiphoid process upward and includes an acoustic replica of the human head. This head simulates natural flesh, and has an artificial voice and artificial ears that measure sound pressures at the eardrum or the entrance to the ear canal.
