Resonant coupling of ionization waves and acoustic gravity waves in the presence of a magnetic field

The nature of the two resonant directions that occur for a single frequency in the presence of a magnetic field is demonstrated, along with the manner in which the resonances change with the dip angle and the angle of propagation from the meridian plane. The conditions under which acoustic branch resonances may occur are outlined. It is found that the calculated frequencies and directions for resonance are in the range of observed values for TID's obtained from ground and satellite measurements. This result is indicative of a possible connection between TID's and the resonance phenomenon. It is shown that a strong resonance type of response may be possible in the F region at a particular frequency from a region that can be as great as 100 km in altitude.

Imaging front-end systems for millimeter waves and submillimeter waves

Imaging (multi-beam) front-end systems utilize a reflector or a lens, as well as a focal-plane array of receptor elements (beams). To be practical, such systems must utilize focal plane arrays which can be fabricated using hybrid integrated (and eventually monolithic) technology. This paper reviews alternative approaches to focussing elements, auxiliary devices required for local oscillator injection and similar functions, and focal plane arrays. It also discusses general limitations and advantages of these approaches, as well as typical applications to millimeter and submillimeter astronomical instrumentation.

Electron cyclotron harmonic waves observed by the AMPTE-IRM plasma wave experiment following a lithium release in the solar wind

An unexpected occurrence following the second lithium release by the AMPTE-IRM spacecraft in the solar wind on September 20, 1984, was the appearance of electron cyclotron harmonic emissions. These emissions began about 50 s after the release and continued for several minutes. Narrow-band emissions polarized perpendicular to the magnetic field with amplitudes of approximately 0.00001 V/m were observed in each of the first five harmonic bands. The diffuse emissions extended from below the lowest measured frequency channel to above the highest narrow-band emission with a maximum below the electron cyclotron frequency. It will be shown that these observations are inconsistent with their generation by several ion beam instabilities.

Effects of transverse oscillatory waves on turbulent boundary waves

Studies of the interaction of unsteady (oscillatory) flows with the growth of a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate have primarily dealt with an oscillatory component in the primary flow direction. Past studies of the 2-D flow have shown little or no increase in the time averaged heat transfer. The present paper deals with a steady axial and an oscillatory transverse flow. It is shown that for such flows the temporal variation for both the turbulent skin friction and heat transfer are such as to yield increased time averaged values.
