Drought increases microbial allocation to stress tolerance but with few tradeoffs among community-level traits

We leverage the Kellogg Biological Station Long Term Ecological Research Main Cropping System Experiment (KBS MCSE) field experiment to test trade-offs among high growth yield (Y), resource acquisition (A), and stress tolerance (S) traits using metagenomic data from plots with different land use, drought manipulation, and C addition.

Computer/PERT technique monitors actual versus allocated costs

A computer method measures the users performance in cost-type contracts utilizing the existing nasa program evaluation review technique without imposing any additional reporting requirements. progress is measured by comparing actual costs with a value of work performed in a specific period.

Interplex: An analysis of optimized power allocations for two and three channel PSK/PM telecommunications systems

Optimal design concepts are presented for two- and three-channel telemetry modes in the context of the Mariner Venus-Mercury 1973 mission and the usefulness of interplex modulation techniques is discussed. These ideas are applied as an example to one Mariner Venus-Mercury 1973 telemetry mode to demonstrate that interplex can reduce the required total average power by more than 2 dB in some cases.

Sharing the 620-790 MHz band allocated to terrestrial television with an audio-bandwidth social service satellite system

A study was carried out to identify the optimum uplink and downlink frequencies for audio-bandwidth channels for use by a satellite system distributing social services. The study considered functional-user-need models for five types of social services and identified a general baseline system that is appropriate for most of them. Technical aspects and costs of this system and of the frequency bands that it might use were reviewed, leading to the identification of the 620-790 MHz band as a perferred candidate for both uplink and downlink transmissions for nonmobile applications. The study also led to some ideas as to how to configure the satellite system.

Psychological Issues in Online Adaptive Task Allocation

Adaptive aiding is an idea that offers potential for improvement over many current approaches to aiding in human-computer systems. The expected return of tailoring the system to fit the user could be in the form of improved system performance and/or increased user satisfaction. Issues such as the manner in which information is shared between human and computer, the appropriate division of labor between them, and the level of autonomy of the aid are explored. A simulated visual search task was developed. Subjects are required to identify targets in a moving display while performing a compensatory sub-critical tracking task. By manipulating characteristics of the situation such as imposed task-related workload and effort required to communicate with the computer, it is possible to create conditions in which interaction with the computer would be more or less desirable. The results of preliminary research using this experimental scenario are presented, and future directions for this research effort are discussed.
