Two new classes of compactifications of d = 11 supergravity

Two new classes of solutions of the d = 11 supergravity equations are obtained in which the internal space is a U(1) bundle over a six-dimensional Kaehler manifold. The 4-index field strength is nonzero both in space-time and in the internal space.

Fractional representation theory - Robustness results with applications to finite dimensional control of a class of linear distributed systems

This paper reviews and extends the fractional representation theory. In particular, new and powerful robustness results are presented. This new theory is utilized to develop a preliminary design methodology for finite dimensional control of a class of linear evolution equations on a Banach space. The design is for stability in an input-output sense, but particular attention is paid to internal stability as well.

Closed-form solutions for a class of optimal quadratic tracking problems

Closed-form solutions are derived for a class of tracking problems including a linear optimal regulator and a prefilter for a time-invariant plant. The solutions for the prefilter equation and state trajectory coupled by the Riccati equation are exponentially related to the stability matrix of the plant. A computational procedure is presented in recursive form when the desired output state dynamics is assumed linear and time-invariant. Several examples are given for illustration.

Extending the capabilities of sounding rocket class experiments

A low cost, Shuttle launched short duration free-flyer, known as Spartan that can accommodate sounding rocket class experiments for up to 40 hr of data collection time was developed. A family of retrievable carriers is under construction to accommodate payloads from X-ray astronomy, solar physics, UV astronomy, and studies of Halley's comet. The capabilities, rationale, design, and mission operations of the carriers is discussed.

Dynamic characteristics of two 300 kW class dual keel space station concepts

Results from an investigation of the dynamic behavior of a 300 kW class solar dynamic powered, dual kell space station are presented. The purpose of the investigation was to determine and assess the influence of space station truss bay size on station controllability during rigid body attitude adjustment and orbit reboost maneuvers. The dual keel space station concept is defined and two finite element models (one which has a truss bay size of 5m and another with a truss bay size of 9 feet) are described. Rigid and flexible body characteristics of the two space station models are also presented. Finally, results from a transient response analysis, where the stations are subjected to an orbit reboost maneuver, are summarized.

Two classes of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances observed with an array on HF-Doppler sounders

The importance of the quasi-evanescent mode of acoustic-gravity waves (AGW) was recently stressed to elaborate on the daytime dispersion characteristics of horizontal velocity of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MS-TID) which were observed by a high frequency Doppler (HFD) sounder array in central Japan. Observed MS-TIDs were classified into two categories: the internal mode and the quasi-evanescent mode as regards physical implication. Nonlinear wave-wave interaction is proposed in an attempt to explain salient features of the latter-class TID.

Construction of approximate analytical solutions to a new class of non-linear oscillator equation

The principle of harmonic balance is invoked in the development of an approximate analytic model for a class of nonlinear oscillators typified by a mass attached to a stretched wire. By assuming that harmonic balance will hold, solutions are devised for a steady state limit cycle and/or limit point motion. A method of slowly varying amplitudes then allows derivation of approximate solutions by determining the form of the exact solutions and substituting into them the lowest order terms of their respective Fourier expansions. The latter technique is actually a generalization of the method proposed by Kryloff and Bogoliuboff (1943).

Two classes of solar energetic particle events associated with impulsive and long-duration soft X-ray flares

For the period 1978 September to 1983 December, 67 solar particle events have been identified for which the instruments detected electrons above 3 MeV and for which there are soft X-ray observations. The events are divided into two classes impulsive and long-duration - based on their signature in soft X-rays, and it is found that they have different properties. The events originating with impulsive flares are associated with intensed meter-wavelength type III bursts with associated type V continuum. The events associated with long-duration flares can originate anywhere on the solar disk, extend to much higher proton energies, and are well associated with coronal and interplanetary shocks; for about half of the long-duration events, the associated meter-wavelength events do not include type III bursts. The results discovered by Evenson et al. (1984) and by Kahler et al. (1984) are extended.

Steady hydromagnetic flows in open magnetic fields. I - A class of analytic solutions

In the case of an establishment of theoretical models of the hydromagnetic solar wind, the inclusion of the effects of the magnetic field in the solar wind makes it extremely dificult to solve the mathematical problem. This paper has the objective to present a set of particular analytic solutions. The general formulation of Tsinganos (1982) is used to identify a class of analytic solutions to the equations of steady hydromagnetic flows in spherical coordinates. Flow in an open magnetic field are studied, taking into account the problem in dimensionless form, the special case of radial flows with alpha = 0, general radial flows, illustrative examples for flows in which alpha is not equal to 0, a parametric study of nonradial flows in which alpha is not equal to zero, variations in the parameter nu, and variations in the initial speed eta.

Analysis of a new class of grazing incidence spectroscopic telescope

The throughput and imaging properties of one of a new class of grazing incidence spectroscopic telescope are examined with a Monte Carlo ray tracing technique. The results are compared with Wolter Schwarzschild type II telescopes of similar size. The image quality of this telescope is comparable, and the control of the off-axis light is superior to the Wolter Schwarzschild design.

The elimination of a class of pseudo echoes by an improved T/R switch technique

An annoying class of pseudo echoes are described that evidently occur occasionally in a number of ST (stratosphere troposphere) radars. The origin of these signals are located in the output circuitry of the radar transmitter. Two methods for the elimination of the radar echoes are suggested and briefly desscrib.

The 1986 DA and 1986 EB: M-class asteroids in near-Earth orbits

The Earth-approaching asteroid population is composed of asteroids in orbits with short lifetimes compared with the age of the solar system. These objects which are comprised of Aten, Apollo, and Amor asteroids must be replenished from either cometary or mainbelt asteroid sources since lifetimes against collision with or ejection by a planet are on the order of 10 to 100 million years. The physical study of Earth-approaching asteroids is constrained by the generally long period between favorable apparitions and poorly known orbits. Broadband spectrophotometry on the Johnson UBVR system and the Eight-Color Asteroid Survey system were obtained at Kitt Peak National Observatory and on the Johnson JHK system and at 10 and 20 microns at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea Observatory. These observations were used to determine the absolute visual magnitudes and to derive the visual geometric albedos and diameters on the IRAS system. The spectral reflectance properties and geometric albedos of the M-class asteroids are consistent compositions analogous to the iron nickel meteorites or the enstatite-metal assemblages of the enstatite chondrites. The issue of the source(s) of the near-Earth asteroids population was examined by comparing the classifications on the scheme employed by Gradie and Tedesco of 38 such asteroids. Most of the near-Earth objects is indeed the asteroid belt as the observations suggest, then a method for removing extinct nuclei of short period comets must be found since the rate of production of short period comets from the long period comets is relatively large.

A statistical study of Mercurian crater classes applied to the emplacement of the intercrater plains

Two principal processes have been invoked for emplacement of the intercrater plains: (1) basin ejecta and autochthonous surface materials reworked by that ejecta or (2) volcanic flows. A new approach was taken: the multivariate statistical analysis of crater class. The results of the analysis constrain the formative process of the intercrater plains units to have affected craters on both terrains in a similar manner. Any emplacement process brief in temporal extent (compared to the period of late heavy bombardment), such as emplacement of ejecta from a single event or a brief period of extensive volcanism, violates this constraint. This analysis is briefly discussed.

Wind-tunnel evaluation of an advanced main-rotor blade design for a utility-class helicopter

An investigation was conducted in the Langley Transonic Dynamics Tunnel to evaluate differences between an existing utility-class main-rotor blade and an advanced-design main-rotor blade. The two rotor blade designs were compared with regard to rotor performance oscillatory pitch-link loads, and 4-per-rev vertical fixed-system loads. Tests were conducted in hover and over a range of simulated full-scale gross weights and density altitude conditions at advance ratios from 0.15 to 0.40. Results indicate that the advanced blade design offers performance improvements over the baseline blade in both hover and forward flight. Pitch-link oscillatory loads for the baseline rotor were more sensitive to the test conditions than those of the advanced rotor. The 4-per-rev vertical fixed-system load produced by the advanced blade was larger than that produced by the baseline blade at all test conditions.

Electromagnetic scattering from a class of open-ended waveguide discontinuities

A relatively simple high frequency analysis of electromagnetic scattering from a class of open-ended waveguide discontinuites was developed. The waveguides are composed of perfectly-conducting sections in which the electromagnetic field can be written as the sum of waveguide modes. Junctions are formed at the open end and also within interior regions where different sections are joined. The reflection and transmission properties of each junction are described in terms of a scattering matrix which is determined by combining the modal ray picture with high frequency techniques such as the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD), the Equivalent Current Method (ECM), and modifications of the Physical Theory of Diffraction (PTD). A new set of equivalent circuits are employed in this ECM analysis which leads to a simple treatment of many types of junction discontinuities. Also, a new procedure is presented to improve the efficiency of the aperture integration at the open end which is required in the PTD procedure for finding the fields radiated from (or coupled to) the open end. Once the scattering matrices are determined, they are then combined using a self-consistent multiple scattering method to obtain the total scattered fields.

On a class of TVD schemes for gas dynamic calculations

The purpose of this paper is to review a class of explicit and implicit second-order accurate Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) schemes and to show by numerical experiments, the performance of these schemes to the Euler equations of gas dynamics. The method of constructing these second-order accurate TVD schemes is sometimes known as the modified flux approach.

Two classes of gamma-ray/proton flares - Impulsive and gradual

Various observational properties of gamma-ray/proton (GR/P) flares are investigated. The question whether gamma ray line (GRL) flares are different from other flares is reevaluated, and flares with gradual hard X-ray time profiles are searched for and shown to share many common characteristics. Among the gradual flares, the only difference between those with observable nuclear gamma rays and those without is that hard X-ray burst spectrometer peak rates are greater than 4500 counts/s for the former, and less for the latter. It is proposed that GR/P flares be classified into impulsive and gradual flares. The differences between the two classes ofo GR/P flares are studied in phenomena occurring in the high corona and interplanetary medium. By examining the ratio of the number of interplanetary protons to the number of gamma-ray producing protons, it is found that it is small for impulsive GR/P flares but relatively large for gradual GR/P flares.

Simplified solution for a class of fading memory filters

A fading memory filter is a least squares estimator (LSE) that applies an exponentially decaying weight to past measurements. When compared with a standard Kalman filter, its key advantages are asymptotic stability and reduced sensitivity to modeling errors. This paper derives a simple solution for a class of fading memory filters, resulting in a reduction in computational complexity. Steady state filter solutions are obtained for second- and third-order filters used in a global positioning system (GPS) receiver for high dynamic vehicles.
