Hybrid Method for Eigenvalue Sensitivity Coefficient Calculations: Part II [Slides]

The hybrid method stemmed from a need to develop a way for CLUTCH to generate more accurate sensitivity coefficients for systems with large fissionable reflectors (i.e., HMF-028-001). For additional systems, the method has been shown to generate accurate sensitivity coefficients for a variety of systems with different fissile nuclides, fissile forms, and neutron energy spectra.

Calculations of Subcritical Limits in ANSI/ANS-8.1 [Slides]

ANSI/ANS-8.1 standard “Nuclear Criticality Safety in Operations with Fissionable Materials Outside of Reactors” provides subcritical limit (SCL) values for several single- and multiple-parameter limits for fissile nuclides, including, uniform aqueous solutions and metals containing nuclides of 233 U, 235 U, and 239 Pu, uranium-water lattices, homogeneous uranium-water mixtures of dry/damp oxides, uniform aqueous solutions of low-enriched uranium, and uniform aqueous mixtures of Pu(NO 3 ) 4 containing 240 Pu

Addressing Critical Challenges of Coal Mines for Underground Pumped Storage Hydropower Using Numerical Calculations

Using existing coal mines to build underground pumped storage hydropower (UPSH) power plants could help reduce the costs associated with starting a new PSH operation. This innovative approach can leverage the existing infrastructure of coal mine facilities available in many regions of the United States. However, technical challenges associated with water quality, mineral chemistry and integrity of subsurface topologies have thus far prevented any of these facilities from going online. Rye Development is investigating the feasibility of UPSH at existing coal mine facilities. In this project, Rye Development received the technical assistance from Oak Ridge National Laboratory to investigate the impacts of minerals, metal particles, and chemical substances in water flow on hydraulic equipment and assess the overall structural integrity of hydraulic equipment in former coal mines.

CPUC Avoided Transmission and Distribution Cost Study to Support the Avoided Cost Calculator: Avoided Transmission Costs Draft Research Plan

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) have been contracted by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) Energy Division (ED) to perform a study which explores and selects an improved methodology to estimate avoided electricity transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure costs that can be attributed to the presence of distributed energy resources (DERs). PNNL is performing the study for avoided electricity transmission infrastructure costs and LBNL is performing the study for avoided electricity distribution infrastructure costs. This document summarizes CPUC’s research questions related to avoided transmission infrastructure costs and PNNL’s proposed technical approach to answer these questions.

Calculation of nuclear magnetic form factors [Slides]

The knowledge of how electron and neutrinos interact in nuclei is critical to an understanding of finite nucle and of astrophysical environments like neutron stars and supernovae. Within this project we are studying nuclear magnetic form factors that reflect how electrons interact with nuclei at low momenta. We implemented realistic treatments of many-nucleon correlations and currents to enable high-precision studies of electron physics.

Continuous-Energy Verification of MCNP Calculations Using One-Group Spherical and Slab Criticality Benchmarks

This work presents a continuous-energy Monte Carlo verification study of one group spherical and slab criticality benchmarks using the MCNP ®1 code. Classical tabulations and newly generated benchmark solutions obtained by direct numerical evaluation by the author are considered. The benchmarks span weakly to strongly multiplying regimes and provide analytically defined critical radii as functions of a single parameter, c .

Nuclear Balance-of-Plant Analysis for Heat and Electricity Calculations in Several Advanced Nuclear Reactor Concepts

In addition to producing electricity, advanced nuclear reactors can also serve as a source of process heat for a wide range of industrial or residential applications. In cases where the heat application requires low-temperature heat, waste heat from the balance of plant (BOP) can be utilized with minimal impact on electricity generation. For applications requiring higher-temperature heat, heat can be extracted from the BOP, though this will reduce the amount of electricity generated. In either case, the optimal BOP design will be case-specific and depend on multiple factors, including the reactor type and the thermal requirements of the heat application.

Specimen sizing and remaining life sample calculations for high temperature reactor material surveillance

Advanced high-temperature nuclear reactors rely on structural components that will operate for decades under combined mechanical, thermal, and environmental loading. Materials surveillance programs are a promising strategy for managing the resulting uncertainty in long-term structural integrity by monitoring degradation in service using passively actuated mechanical test articles. Previous reports have developed a simplified, spreadsheetimplementable framework for sizing these test articles and for inferring accumulated creep damage and remaining life from ex-situ test data. This report advances that work toward practical deployment by providing a sample-problem book: a collection of worked, end-toend examples in which the ASME Section III, Division 5 design analysis of a representative high-temperature reactor component is carried through to a sized surveillance article, verified with detailed finite-element analysis, and concluded with a remaining-life assessment based on an assumed ex-situ creep-rate measurement on the retrieved specimen. The report also summarizes ongoing ANL engagement with ASTM Committee E10 on Nuclear Technology and Applications toward drafting a standard covering surveillance procedures for advanced reactors.
