Collapse of long cylindrical shells under combined bending and pressure loads

The nonlinear collapse behavior of long cylindrical shell structures subject to a bending load only or combined bending and uniform normal pressure loads is studied using the STAGS computer code. Two modes of nonlinear collapse are investigated to determine maximum strength. One mode of collapse is described by circumferential flattening of the cylinder cross section, while the other mode is represented by axial wrinkling in the region of maximum compression. Results compare favorably with available published data for cylinders loaded by pure bending, and results are presented for combined loads which have not been previously reported. The collapse loads obtained in this study show that current design criteria are conservative except for a narrow range of length-to-radius ratios and pressures.

Long arc orbit determination for Mariner 9 using combined radio and optical data types

Results of postflight orbit determination for the Mariner 9 trajectory (Mariner-Mars 1971 mission) using Doppler data combined with optical data in the form of TV photographs of the natural satellites and Mars' surface features. It is shown that the combined data yield a solution which is a factor of 3 to 5 better than that obtained from Doppler-only solutions for the node of the orbit relative to the plane perpendicular to the Earth-Mars line. Consequently, these optical data types have a demonstrated potential to significantly improve planetary orbiter navigation accuracies.

Skin friction reduction in supersonic flow by injection through slots, porous sections and combinations of the two

An experimental study of skin friction reduction in a Mach 3.0 air steam with gaseous injection through a tangential slot, a porous wall section, and combinations of the two was conducted. The primary data obtained were wall shear values measured directly with a floating element balance and also inferred from Preston Tube measurements. Detailed profiles at several axial stations, wall pressure distributions and schlieren photographs are presented. The data indicate that a slot provides the greatest skin friction reduction in comparison with a reference flat plate experiment. The porous wall section arrangement suffers from an apparent roughness-induced rise in skin friction at low injection rates compared to the flat plate. The combination schemes demonstrated a potential for gain.

Side cracked plated subject to combined direct and bending forces

The opening mode stress intensity factor and the associated crack mouth displacement are comprehensively treated using planar boundary collocation results supplemented by end point values from the literature. Data are expressed in terms of dimensionless coefficients of convenient form which are each functions of two dimensionless parameters, the relative crack length, and a load combination parameter which uniquely characterizes all possible combinations of tension or compression with bending or counterbending. Accurate interpolation expressions are provided which cover the entire ranges of both parameters. Application is limited to specimens with ratios of effective half-height to width not less than unity.

Buckling analysis for anisotropic laminated plates under combined inplane loads

The buckling analysis presented considers rectangular flat or curved general laminates subjected to combined inplane normal and shear loads. Linear theory is used in the analysis. All prebuckling deformations and any initial imperfections are ignored. The analysis method can be readily extended to longitudinally stiffened structures subjected to combined inplane normal and shear loads.

Fracture under combined modes in 4340 steel

An experimental investigation was conducted to study the interaction of combined modes of loading on crack instability in the presence of the opening and sliding modes of stress intensity factors, the opening and tearing modes of stress intensity factors, and all three modes of stress intensity factors. Through-cracked and surface-cracked flat and round specimens, and round notched bar specimens fabricated from high strength 4340 steel were used for the investigation. The results are evaluated to determine fracture criteria under the combined modes of stress intensity factors for the 4340 steel. These results are compared with the results of other investigators obtained for different materials.

Combination of an electrolytic pretreatment unit with secondary water reclamation processes

The design and fabrication of a flight concept prototype electrolytic pretreatment unit (EPU) and of a contractor-furnished air evaporation unit (AEU) are described. The integrated EPU and AEU potable water recovery system is referred to as the Electrovap and is capable of processing the urine and flush water of a six-man crew. Results of a five-day performance verification test of the Electrovap system are presented and plans are included for the extended testing of the Electrovap to produce data applicable to the combination of electrolytic pretreatment with most final potable water recovery systems. Plans are also presented for a program to define the design requirements for combining the electrolytic pretreatment unit with a reverse osmosis final processing unit.

Resizing procedure for optimum design of structures under combined mechanical and thermal loading

An algorithm is reported for resizing structures subjected to combined thermal and mechanical loading. The algorithm is applicable to uniaxial stress elements (rods) and membrane biaxial stress members. Thermal Fully Stressed Design (TFSD) is based on the basic difference between mechanical and thermal stresses in their response to resizing. The TFSD technique is found to converge in fewer iterations than ordinary fully stressed design for problems where thermal stresses are comparable to the mechanical stresses. The improved convergence is demonstrated by example with a study of a simplified wing structure, built-up with rods and membranes and subjected to a combination of mechanical loads and a three dimensional temperature distribution.

A combined representation method for use in band structure calculations. 1: Method

A representation was described whose basis levels combine the important physical aspects of a finite set of plane waves with those of a set of Bloch tight-binding levels. The chosen combination has a particularly simple dependence on the wave vector within the Brillouin Zone, and its use in reducing the standard one-electron band structure problem to the usual secular equation has the advantage that the lattice sums involved in the calculation of the matrix elements are actually independent of the wave vector. For systems with complicated crystal structures, for which the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR), Augmented-Plane Wave (APW) and Orthogonalized-Plane Wave (OPW) methods are difficult to apply, the present method leads to results with satisfactory accuracy and convergence.

Fatigue criterion for the design of rotating shafts under combined stress

A revised approach to the design of transmission shafting which considers the flexure fatigue characteristics of the shaft material under combined cyclic bending and static torsion stress is presented. A fatigue failure relation, corroborated by published combined stress test data, is presented which shows an elliptical variation of reversed bending endurance strength with static torsional stress. From this elliptical failure relations, a design formula for computing the diameter of rotating solid shafts under the most common condition of loading is developed.

Effect of combined heat and radiation on microbial destruction

A series of experiments at several levels of relative humidity and radiation dose rates was carried out using spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger to evaluate the effect of heat alone, radiation alone, and a combination of heat and radiation. Combined heat and radiation treatment of microorganisms yields a destruction rate greater than the additive rates of the independent agents. The synergistic mechanism shows a proportional dependency on radiation dose rate, an Arrhenius dependence on temperature, and a dependency on relative humidity. Maximum synergism occurs under conditions where heat and radiation individually destroy microorganisms at approximately equal rates. Larger synergistic advantage is possible at low relative humidities rather than at high relative humidities.

Theoretical-experimental correlation for buckling of composite cylinders under combined compression and torsion

Comparison between theory and experiment for buckling of laminated graphite-epoxy and boron-epoxy cylinders under combined compression and torsion are presented. The experimental results are compared to a theory by Wu. It is shown that there is excellent agreement between theory and experiment for pure torsional loading (positive and negative), experimental buckling loads for pure compression are well below the predicted values, and good correlation is exhibited between theory and experiment for buckling under combined loading when compared in the form of normalized buckling interaction diagrams in axial-torsional load space.

Open-Cycle Gas Turbine/Steam Turbine Combined Cycles with synthetic fuels from coal

The Open-Cycle Gas Turbine/Steam Turbine Combined Cycle can be an effective energy conversion system for converting coal to electricity. The intermediate step in this energy conversion process is to convert the coal into a fuel acceptable to a gas turbine. This can be accomplished by producing a synthetic gas or liquid, and by removing, in the fuel conversion step, the elements in the fuel that would be harmful to the environment if combusted. In this paper, two open-cycle gas turbine combined systems are evaluated: one employing an integrated low-Btu gasifier, and one utilizing a semi-clean liquid fuel. A consistent technical/economic information base is developed for these two systems, and is compared with a reference steam plant burning coal directly in a conventional furnace.

The Combined Effects of Pulsed Magnetic Radiation (Diapulse) and Chemotherapy on Tumor Bearing Mice. The Measurement of Rodent Palatal Explants as a Device for Measurement of the Biologic Effects of Nonionic Radiation (EMR)

Simultaneous treatment utilizing pulsed radiowave and cancer chemotherapy significantly extended the life span of mice with Lewis lung transplanted carcinoma. In comparison with nontreated controls, the combination of hydroxyurea and whole body nonionizing EM radiation (at 27.12 MHz) produced differential enhancement of longevity depending on hydroxyurea combined with highest power output achieved by pulsing the radiation 600 times per second; at a 3.9% duty cycle, peak watts = 975 produced the mean extension of life 67% greater than that of the group treated with hydroxyurea alone.
