Evaluating the Potential to Constrain Dark Matter Annihilation with Fermi-LAT Observations of Ultrafaint Compact Stellar Systems

Recent results from numerical simulations and models of galaxy formation suggest that recently discovered ultrafaint compact stellar systems (UFCSs) in the halo of the Milky Way (MW) may be some of the smallest and faintest galaxies. If this is the case, these systems would be attractive targets for indirect searches of weakly interacting massive particle dark matter (DM) annihilation due to their relative proximity and high expected DM content. In this study, we analyze 14.3 yr of γ-ray data collected by the Fermi-Large Area Telescope coincident with 26 UFCSs. No significant excess γ-ray emission is detected, and we present γ-ray flux upper limits for these systems. Assuming that the UFCSs are DM-dominated galaxies consistent with being among the faintest and least massive MW dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellite galaxies, we derive the projected sensitivity for a DM annihilation signal. We find that observations of UFCSs have the potential to yield some of the most powerful constraints on DM annihilation, with sensitivity comparable to observations of known dSphs and the Galactic center. This result emphasizes the importance of precise kinematic studies of UFCSs to empirically determine their DM content.

Reference black body is compact, convenient to use

To replace the classical hollow sphere, a compact reference black body has been constructed from stacked razor blades. Treated with a deposit of black oxide on the surfaces or notches between the upper edges of the blades, the device is useful over a wide range of incident angles.

Compact retractor protects cabling loops

Core and swivel retractor mechanism combined with cable stiffeners provides compact, long-wearing protection for cabling loops in cabinet-mounted electronic equipment drawers.

Compact actuator converts rotary to linear motion

Compact motor mounted on a stationary base converts rotary to linear motion. The motor rotates a gear train assembly so that the end of an arm attached to the assembly moves in a linear path.

Shock-absorbing caster wheel is simple and compact

Compact shock-absorbing caster wheel mitigates or absorbs shock by a compressible tire which deforms into a cavity between its inner edge and the wheel hub. A tee-shaped annular ring embedded in the tire distributes loads more uniformly throughout both wheel and tire.

Compact monitoring and control console for pressurized gas bottles

Compact monitoring and control console dispenses gas over a range of pressures from conventional compressed-gas cylinders. It incorporates in a single assembly the necessary equipment for a portable pressurization system that can be used in welding and other operations requiring a controlled gas supply.

Compact rotating cup anemometer

Compact, collapsible rotating cup anemometer is used in remote locations where portability and durability are factors in the choice of equipment. This lightweight instrument has a low wind-velocity threshold, is capable of withstanding large mechanical shocks while in its stowed configuration, and has fast response to wind fluctuations.

A compact rotary vane attenuator

Rotary vane attenuator, when used as a front end attenuator, introduces an insertion loss that is proportional to the angle of rotation. New technique allows the construction of a shortened compact unit suitable for most installations.
