An all digital low data rate communication system

The advent of digital hardwares has made it feasible to implement many communication system components digitally. With the exception of frequency down conversion, the proposed low data rate communication system uses digital hardwares completely. Although the system is designed primarily for deep space communications with large frequency uncertainty and low signal-to-noise ratio, it is also suitable for other low data rate applications with time-shared operation among a number of channels. Emphasis is placed on the fast Fourier transform receiver and the automatic frequency control via digital filtering. The speed available from the digital system allows sophisticated signal processing to reduce frequency uncertainty and to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. The practical limitations of the system such as the finite register length are examined. It is concluded that the proposed all-digital system is not only technically feasible but also has potential cost reduction over the existing receiving systems.

Supply support of NASA tracking networks

The extent which supply support for Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Deep Space Network and Goddard Space Flight Center's Space Flight Tracking and Data Network should be consolidated is considered along with the Identification of opportunities for improvements in each of the supply systems without regard to consolidation. There is a considerable amount of commonality between the items in the stock catalogs at the two network depots, 58% for federal stock number items and 30% overall. The workload at the DSIF Supply Depot (DSD) is small (less than 20%) compared to the Network Logistics Depot (NLD). A number of important benefits in supply support would result from a consolidation of DSD into NLD. LMI found that a consolidation as is, without any changes in inventory management techniques, would reduce annual operating costs by from $208,000 to $358,000. However, if the consolidation were coupled with a change to use of economic order quantities, the annual operating cost reduction would range from $930,000 to $1,078,000.

Life sciences payload definition and integration study. Volume 2: Requirements, design, and planning studies for the carry-on laboratories

The task phase concerned with the requirements, design, and planning studies for the carry-on laboratory (COL) began with a definition of biomedical research areas and candidate research equipment, and then went on to develop conceptual layouts for COL which were each evaluated in order to arrive at a final conceptual design. Each step in this design/evaluation process concerned itself with man/systems integration research and hardware, and life support and protective systems research and equipment selection. COL integration studies were also conducted and include attention to electrical power and data management requirements, operational considerations, and shuttle/Spacelab interface specifications. A COL program schedule was compiled, and a cost analysis was finalized which takes into account work breakdown, annual funding, and cost reduction guidelines.

Delta's inexpensive, reliable, and versatile third generation upper stage

The need for larger diameter fairings to encapsulate spacecraft designed to use Delta's increased lifting capabilities resulted in hammer-head design configurations that would have unaccepably degraded vehicle flight characteristics. This situation led to the development of the Straight Eight configuration. The towed mode arrangement for the second stage negated the requirement for the engine compartment structure, thus establishing the potential for an improved packaging of the hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Therefore, with cost reduction and reliability improvement objectives, a second stage propulsion system improvement program was initiated. The paper will describe these improvements and their system benefits.

Design/cost tradeoff studies. Appendix A. Supporting analyses and tradeoffs, book 2. Earth Observatory Satellite system definition study (EOS)

Attitude reference systems for use with the Earth Observatory Satellite (EOS) are described. The systems considered are fixed and gimbaled star trackers, star mappers, and digital sun sensors. Covariance analyses were performed to determine performance for the most promising candidate in low altitude and synchronous orbits. The performance of attitude estimators that employ gyroscopes which are periodically updated by a star sensor is established by a single axis covariance analysis. The other systems considered are: (1) the propulsion system design, (2) electric power and electrical integration, (3) thermal control, (4) ground data processing, and (5) the test plan and cost reduction aspects of observatory integration and test.

Data monitoring and information availability - A key to solar energy utilization

Widespread use of solar energy heating and cooling systems is dependent upon their price competitiveness with other systems in the marketplace. There are indications that the degree of accuracy of existing solar insolation data is such that systems must be oversized by 50 percent. Refinement of the solar insolation data could result in a substantial cost reduction of solar heating and cooling systems making these units more competitive with conventional systems. This paper describes a system, the Sunfall Monitor, that provides this capability. The system monitors and records on tape in computer-compatible format the values of the direct and total solar irradiance. Provisions are also incorporated for evaluation of solar cell, collector and absorber material samples. Concepts and discussions for application of the device in relationship to research/development and the solar energy heating and cooling acts conclude the paper.

Low cost solar cell arrays

Limitations in both space and terrestial markets for solar cells are described. Based on knowledge of the state-of-the-art, six cell options are discussed; as a result of this discussion, the three most promising options (involving high, medium and low efficiency cells respectively) were selected and analyzed for their probable costs. The results showed that all three cell options gave promise of costs below $10 per watt in the near future. Before further cost reductions can be achieved, more R and D work is required; suggestions for suitable programs are given.

Spacecraft factory-to-pad testing concept

It is noted that the concept of factory-to-pad testing is based on the shipment of a flight-ready spacecraft to the launch base and can be achieved by thorough and comprehensive factory testing of the spacecraft. The principal objectives and results of this approach are shown to be significant cost reductions, increased test effectiveness, and fewer flight problems. Key elements for this concept's success are discussed, including factory-to-pad commonality of support equipment, test requirements and procedures, test teams, and computer programs. Applications of this approach in the space-shuttle era are considered, and a preliminary factory-to-pad concept for the Large Space Telescope spacecraft is presented.

Recent developments in multiplane-multispeed balancing of flexible rotors in the United States

This paper describes current developments in the evolution of a computer-implemented balancing procedure which permits flexible rotors to be precisely balanced in a cost-effective manner. Corrections in virtually any reasonable number of planes, computed by the procedure using signals from vibration sensors at critical locations, permit rotor operation over any design speed range. Steady-state operation at undamped critical speeds has been demonstrated. Results of recent test efforts indicate that the procedure can be applied with equal effectiveness to rotors of any size. Manufacturing and overhaul cost reductions are expected to flow from its adoption, together with performance advantages from operation in hitherto restricted dynamic regimes.-

General aviation design synthesis utilizing interactive computer graphics

Interactive computer graphics is a fast growing area of computer application, due to such factors as substantial cost reductions in hardware, general availability of software, and expanded data communication networks. In addition to allowing faster and more meaningful input/output, computer graphics permits the use of data in graphic form to carry out parametric studies for configuration selection and for assessing the impact of advanced technologies on general aviation designs. The incorporation of interactive computer graphics into a NASA developed general aviation synthesis program is described, and the potential uses of the synthesis program in preliminary design are demonstrated.

HEAO attitude control subsystem - A multimode/multimission design

The initial three satellites in the High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO) series are in the final development stages with the first launch to be in April 1977. The overall program design concept stressed cost reduction through use of hardware standardization for the three configurations and missions. The Attitude Control and Determination Subsystem (ACDS) developed for HEAO was able to achieve significant design commonality in both hardware and software in an implementation which satisfied the performance requirements of the different missions. The ACDS thus provides an example of a multimode/multimission design which should soon be operational.
