Effects of asymmetric passband filtering on the phase of the Costas loop's reconstructed carrier

The reconstructed carrier of a telemetry return signal is used in deriving the Doppler and range information in the radiometric systems. When suppressed carrier BPSK signalling with Costas loop demodulation is used, there are concerns on the amount of shift in the reconstructed carrier phase, when the received signal suffers asymmetric bandpass filtering through the various stages of the receiver. It is concluded that the phase shifts due to asymmetric bandpass filtering on the Costas loop's reconstructed carrier can be slightly worse than those suffered by the residual carrier loop's reconstructed carrier. However, they are well within the error budgets of the radiometric system.

A long-range and long-life telemetry data-acquisition system for heart rate and multiple body temperatures from free-ranging animals

The system includes an implantable transmitter, external receiver-retransmitter collar, and a microprocessor-controlled demodulator. The size of the implant is suitable for animals with body weights of a few kilograms or more; further size reduction of the implant is possible. The ECG is sensed by electrodes designed for internal telemetry and to reduce movement artifacts. The R-wave characteristics are then specifically selected to trigger a short radio frequency pulse. Temperatures are sensed at desired locations by thermistors and then, based on a heartbeat counter, transmitted intermittently via pulse interval modulation. This modulation scheme includes first and last calibration intervals for a reference by ratios with the temperature intervals to achieve good accuracy even over long periods. Pulse duration and pulse sequencing are used to discriminate between heart rate and temperature pulses as well as RF interference.

On signal design by the R/0/ criterion for non-white Gaussian noise channels

The use of the cut-off rate criterion for modulation system design is investigated for channels with non-white Gaussian noise. A signal space representation of the waveform channel is developed, and the cut-off rate for vector channels with additive non-white Gaussian noise and unquantized demodulation is derived. When the signal input to the channel is a continuous random vector, maximization of the cut-off rate with constrained average signal energy leads to a water-filling interpretation of optimal energy distribution in signal space. The necessary condition for a finite signal set to maximize the cut-off rate with constrained energy and an equally likely probability assignment of signal vectors is presented, and an algorithm is outlined for numerically computing the optimum signal set. As an example, the rectangular signal set which has the water-filling average energy distribution and the optimum rectangular set are compared.

Fiber optic rotation sensor /FORS/ signal detection and processing

The recent development of low-loss single-mode optical fiber waveguides for light has made possible a new class of inertial reference devices built on the principle of a closed loop interferometer. Light circulating through the loop in both directions experiences a relative phase delay proportional to rotation rate about the loop axis. This paper derives the phase delay and discusses signal detection, signal processing techniques and error sources. It is concluded that synchronous modulation and demodulation and an active gain control at the signal calculation level are required to eliminate drift errors. Potential performance is extraordinarily good; rotation rate sensitivity of a few milli-arc seconds per second and angular position random walk errors of an arc second per square root hour appear feasible.

A class of programmable satellite receivers

The primary purpose of programmable satellite receivers is to provide flexibility in application through digital control of the important functions of the receiver. This permits the acquisition and demodulation of medium to very low data rates in widely varying communications environments and over a wide range of modulation schemes. The first application of the programmable concept is in the high-reliability, low-power NASA Standard Command Detector Unit. A second programmable receiver has been designed and breadboarded for the Jupiter Orbiter Probe or Galileo mission.

A versatile microprocessor-controlled hybrid receiver

A hybrid receiver has been designed for the Galileo Project. The receiver, located on the Galileo Orbiter, will autonomously acquire and track signals from the first atmospheric probe of Jupiter as well as demodulate, bit-synchronize, and buffer the telemetry data. The receiver has a conventional RF and LF front end but performs multiple functions digitally under firmware control. It will be a self-acquiring receiver that operates under a large frequency uncertainty; it can accommodate different modulation types, bit rates, and other parameter changes via reprogramming. A breadboard receiver and test set demonstrate a preliminary version of the sequential detection process and verify the hypothesis that a fading channel does not reduce the probability of detection.

Modulation of centimetric waves by long gravity waves - Progress report on field and laboratory results

Results are presented from laboratory and field experiments on the modulation of short waves by long waves. The field study employed a wave follower capable of tracking ocean waves with frequencies less than 1.0 Hz and heights less than 2.0 m. A high-response laser-optical system was used to detect upwind-downwind and cross-wind slopes of short waves. The laboratory study was conducted with wind over periodic long waves. The laboratory findings are discussed and compared with laboratory radar measurements and also short wave measurements obtained in the field. It is found that long waves significantly modulate the short wave dispersion by their orbital velocity, and that demodulation is necessary if the data collected by remote sensors are to be compared to surface penetrating devices. The modulation level is weak for wavelengths in the range 2.76-3.30 cm. Other relevant results are also presented.

The 30/20 GHz mixed user architecture development study: Executive summary

The baseline 30/30 GHz satellite communication system, designed for cost-effective communications in the years 1990 to 2000, incorporates on-board satellite demodulation and routing of individual 64 kbps digital voice-grade circuits. This level of routing flexibility is necessary to provide efficient communications to the large number of direct-to-user terminals (DTU) projected. The circuit interfacing hardware is distributed among all the DTU and master control stations. The switching circuitry which provides full interconnectivity between 30 to 45 thousand circuits is in the satellite. The DTU terminal cost, perhaps the largest element in the system cost, represents the largest economic value element of the system because it avoids using terrestrial signal distribution and routing and the charges associated with these functions. Satellite baseline design and power requirements for the system are examined.

Bi-directional four quadrant (BDQ4) power converter development

The feasibility for implementation of a concept for direct ac/dc multikilowatt power conversion with bidirectional transfer of energy was investigated. A 10 kHz current carrier was derived directly from a common 60 Hz three phase power system. This carrier was modulated to remove the 360 Hz ripple, inherent in the three phase power supply and then demodulated and processed by a high frequency filter. The resulting dc power was then supplied to a load. The process was implemented without the use of low frequency transformers and filters. This power conversion processes was reversible and can operate in the four quadrants as viewed from any of the two of the converter's ports. Areas of application include: power systems on air and spacecraft; terrestrial traction; integration of solar and wind powered systems with utility networks; HVDC; asynchronous coupling of polyphase networks; heat treatment; industrial machine drives; and power supplies for any use including instrumentation.

Ultramicrowave communications system, phase 2

Communications system design was completed and reviewed. Minor changes were made in order to make it more cost effective and to increase design flexibility. System design activities identified the techniques and procedures to generate and monitor high data rate test signals. Differential bi-phase demodulation is the proposed method for this system. The mockup and packaging designs were performed, and component layout and interconnection constraints were determined, as well as design drawings for dummy parts of the system. The possibility of adding a low cost option to the transceiver system was studied. The communications program has the advantage that new technology signal processing devices can be readily interfaced with the existing radio frequency subsystem to produce a short range radar.

Critique of the Hughes Aircraft shuttle Ku band leading edge bit synchronizer

A bit synchronizer is analyzed via timing diagrams in a noise-free environment. It is believed that this new bit synchronizer will track the rising edge of the data bits with 25% asymmetry and up to a 90 deg phase shift between the received clock and data bit timing. In addition, the data bits will be demodulated correctly. It is not true that phase shifts larger than 90 deg will necessarily be corrected by this bit synchronizer. However, the specifications currently require the loop to operate over only a + or - 75 deg phase shift between the received data stream leading edges and the bit synchronizer leading edges; consequently, there should be no problem.

Packet communications in satellites with multiple-beam antennas and signal processing

A communication satellite with a multiple-beam antenna and onboard signal processing is considered for use in a 'message-switched' data relay system. The signal processor may incorporate demodulation, routing, storage, and remodulation of the data. A system user model is established and key functional elements for the signal processing are identified. With the throughput and delay requirements as the controlled variables, the hardware complexity, operational discipline, occupied bandwidth, and overall user end-to-end cost are estimated for (1) random-access packet switching; and (2) reservation-access packet switching. Other aspects of this network (eg, the adaptability to channel switched traffic requirements) are examined. For the given requirements and constraints, the reservation system appears to be the most attractive protocol.

Controlling Electron-Beam-Weld Focus

Control loop measures weld-spot temperature to regulate focus current. Square-wave generator modulates current in electron-beam focus coil so that focal point is varied between points slightly above and below surface of weld. Sensor detects intensity of light emitted by weld, proportional to fourth power of temperature at hottest part of weld spot. Sensor signal is detected by chopper demodulator synchronized by square-wave generator, to determine whether average position of focal point is higher than, coincident with, or lower than optimum point; and focus coil current is adjusted accordingly.
