Axion-like particle at the 10 GeV scale: Higgs decays to wide jets and photons

If axion-like particles (ALPs) exist, they may have renormalizable couplings only to the Higgs boson ($h^0$) or to fields beyond the Standard Model. An ALP $A_h$ lighter than about 60 GeV would allow the $h^0 \to A_h A_h$ decay, with a branching fraction determined by the explicit global symmetry breaking responsible for the main contributions to the $A_h$ mass ($M_A$). New heavy fields that carry color and electric charge, such as squarks, can mediate $A_h$ decays at one loop mostly into gluons, but also into photons. Exploring LHC sensitivity to $A_h$, we show that the $h^0 \to A_h A_h \to (gg)(γγ)$ channel leads to a diphoton resonance at $M_A$ whose production rate is consistent with a $3.5σ$ excess reported by a CMS search at $M_A \approx 13.6$ GeV. For $M_A$ of order 10 GeV, the $h^0 \to A_h A_h \to 4g$ cascade decay leads to two wide jets (each with 2-prong substructure) that form a resonance at 125 GeV.

Factorization and resummation of QED radiative corrections for neutron beta decay

Details of the two-loop analysis of long-distance QED radiative corrections to neutron beta decay are presented. Explicit expressions are given for hard, jet, and soft functions appearing in the factorization formula that describes the limit of small electron mass and large electron energy. Numerical enhancements from the infrared region are resummed using renormalization group methods. Power corrections, cancellation of singularities in the small-mass expansion, renormalization scheme dependence, and bound-state effects are also discussed. These results provide the most precise determination of long-distance radiative corrections to neutron beta decay and impact the determination of |𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑑 | from the measured neutron lifetime and thus set a target for uncertainty reductions in the experimental and short-distance inputs.

Data-driven reevaluation of f t values in superallowed β decays

We present a comprehensive reevaluation of the ft values in superallowed nuclear β decays crucial for the precise determination of V ud and low-energy tests of the electroweak standard model. It consists of the first, fully data-driven analysis of the nuclear β decay form factor, that utilizes isospin relations to connect the nuclear charged weak distribution to the measurable charge distributions. This prescription supersedes previous shell-model estimations, and allows for a rigorous quantification of theory uncertainties in f which is absent in the existing literature. Furthermore, our new evaluation shows an overall downward shift of the central values of f at the level of 0.01%.

Analog-antianalog isospin mixing in 47 K 𝛽−decay

Here, we have measured the isospin mixing of the 𝐼 𝜋 =1/2 + , 𝐸 𝑥 = 2.599 MeV state in nearly doubly magic 47 Ca with the isobaric analog 1/2 + state of 47 K . Using the TRIUMF atom trap for 𝛽 decay, we have measured a nonzero asymmetry of the progeny 47 Ca with respect to the initial 47 K spin polarization, which together with the 𝛽 asymmetry implies a nonzero ratio of Fermi to Gamow-Teller matrix elements 𝑦 = 0.098 ± 0.037 for the 1/2 + → 1/2 + transition. Interpreting 𝑦 as mixing between this state and the isobaric analog state implies a Coulomb matrix element magnitude 101 ± 37 keV. This relatively large matrix element supports a model from the literature of analog-antianalog isospin mixing, which predicts large matrix elements in cases involving excess neutrons over protons occupying more than one major shell. The result supports pursuing a search for time-reversal odd, parity-even, isovector interactions using a correlation in 47 K 𝛽 decay.

Precise measurements of the γ -ray intensities following the β decay of Ce 144 and Nd 147

For many fission products, the γ rays emitted following β decay provide an easily detectable signature that can be used to identify their quantities and distributions in a sample. As a result, γ-ray spectroscopy is often exploited to study fission-product yields, provided sufficiently accurate information on the γ-ray intensities is available. Further, in many cases, the uncertainties in the existing nuclear data are large enough that they compromise the precision achievable for modern experiments and applications. In this paper, we present high-precision results for the absolute γ-ray emission intensities for the most intense transitions in the β decays of 144 Ce and 147 Nd. We measured these intensities to ≲1% accuracy by producing radiopure samples with fission-product beams at CARIBU and detecting the emitted radiation with a 4⁢πβ counter and a meticulously efficiency-calibrated high purity germanium detector at Texas A&M University.

Nuclear structure of 157 Sm via 𝛽−decay of 157 Pm

Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus 157 Sm were populated through the 𝛽−decay of 157 Pm , which has a tentatively assigned ground-state spin and parity of 𝐽 𝜋 =(5/2 − ). Over 30 levels have been observed, 16 of which are new, and over 45 new 𝛾-ray transitions have been placed in the level scheme. An evolution in the ground-state configurations for 𝑁 = 95 nuclei from 5/2 − ⁢[523] (Er/Yb), to 5/2 + ⁢[642] (Dy), to 3/2 − ⁢[521] (Sm/Gd) can be explained based on increasing deformation from 𝑍 = 70 to 𝑍 = 62 and the fact that these three orbitals are energetically close to each other at deformations near 𝛽 2 ≈ 0.25–0.3. Finally, tentative spin and parity assignments are made for most of the states below 1500 keV based on the decay properties of the levels and using excitation-energy systematics of the various orbitals observed in 𝑁 = 95 nuclei.

Lattice QCD Calculation of Electroweak Box Contributions to Superallowed Nuclear and Neutron Beta Decays

We present the first lattice QCD calculation of the universal axial γ W -box contribution □ γ W V A to both superallowed nuclear and neutron beta decays. This contribution emerges as a significant component within the theoretical uncertainties surrounding the extraction of | V u d | from superallowed decays. Our calculation is conducted using two domain wall fermion ensembles at the physical pion mass. To construct the nucleon four-point correlation functions, we employ the random sparsening field technique. Furthermore, we incorporate long-distance contributions to the hadronic function using the infinite-volume reconstruction method. Upon performing the continuum extrapolation, we arrive at □ γ W V A = 3.65 ( 7 ) lat ( 1 ) PT × 10 − 3 . Consequently, this yields a slightly higher value of | V u d | = 0.973 86 ( 11 ) exp ( 9 ) RC ( 27 ) NS , reducing the previous 2.1 σ tension with the CKM unitarity to 1.8 σ . Additionally, we calculate the vector γ W -box contribution to the axial charge g A , denoted as □ γ W V V , and explore its potential implications. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for the 𝐾 𝐿 → 𝜋 0 ⁢$𝜈⁢\bar{𝜈}$ Decay at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment

We performed a search for the 𝐾 𝐿 → 𝜋 0 ⁢$𝜈⁢\bar{𝜈}$ decay using the data taken in 2021 at the J-PARC KOTO experiment. With newly installed counters and new analysis method, the expected background was suppressed to 0.252 ± 0.055 stat ⁢ $^{+0.052}_{{−0.067^{syst}}}$. With a single event sensitivity of (9.33 ± 0.0⁢6 stat ±0.8⁢4 syst ) × 10 −10 , no events were observed in the signal region. An upper limit on the branching fraction for the decay was set to be 2.2 ×10 −9 at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous upper limit from KOTO by a factor of 1.4. With the same data, a search for 𝐾 𝐿 → 𝜋 0 ⁢𝑋 0 was also performed, where 𝑋 0 is an invisible boson with a mass ranging from 1 to 260 MeV/𝑐 2 . For 𝑋 0 with a mass of 135 MeV/𝑐 2 , an upper limit on the branching fraction of 𝐾 𝐿 → 𝜋 0 ⁢𝑋 0 was set to be 1.6 ×10 −9 at the 90% C.L.

Final Results of the M AJORANA D EMONSTRATOR ’s Search for Double-Beta Decay of 76 Ge to Excited States of 76 Se

76 Ge can 𝛽⁢𝛽 decay into three possible excited states of 76 Se , with the emission of two or, if the neutrino is Majorana, zero neutrinos. None of these six transitions have yet been observed. The M AJORANA D EMONSTRATOR was designed to study 𝛽⁢𝛽 decay of 76 Ge using a low background array of high purity germanium detectors. With 98.2 kg-y of isotopic exposure, the demonstrator sets the strongest half-life limits to date for all six transition modes. For 2⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 to the 0$^+_1$ state of 76 Se , this search has begun to probe for the first time half-life values predicted using modern many-body nuclear theory techniques, setting a limit of 𝑇 1/2 > 1.5 × 10 24 y (90% CL).

First observation and study of the $K^± → π^0π^0μ^±ν$ decay

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the $K^± → π^0π^0μ^±$ν decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003–2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above 0.03 GeV 2 /c 4 is measured to be (0.65 ± 0.03) × 10 –6 . The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be (3.45 ± 0.16) × 10 –6 , in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions.

A methodology for decay heat characterization in molten salt reactors

Accurate decay heat prediction in molten salt reactors (MSRs) faces dual challenges: complex operational uncertainties and the need for interpretable models compatible with engineering workflows. This work presents a hybrid machine learning and segmented polynomial methodology that addresses both requirements through three key innovations. First, a modular data architecture encodes MSR-specific operational parameters (power density: 1-100 W cm -3 , humidity: 0-0.1 wt %, air ingress: 0-0.1 mol %) with uncertainty-aware temporal discretization spanning 15 orders of magnitude. Second, region-optimized machine learning models achieve 92.3 % root mean square error (RMSE) reduction over conventional polynomials while maintaining physical interpretability through automated piecewise equation generation. Third, dual front-end interfaces accelerate safety analyses — a Jupyter environment enables researchers to explore 10,000+ parameter combinations via interactive widgets, while a Streamlit web application reduces design iteration cycles through production-grade visualization tools. Operational deployment demonstrates prediction times of only a couple hundred milliseconds for 10 4 years decay profiles, enabling real-time optimization of spent fuel container designs.

Excited states in semi-magic 82 Ge populated in the βn-decay of 83 Ga

For this work, the βn and β-decay of the neutron-rich 83 Ga isotopes produced in proton-induced fission of 238 U were studied at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory using on-line mass separation and the hybrid-3Hen neutron-γ detector array. Excited states in semi-magic 82 Ge populated in βn decay of 83 Ga were identified using neutron-γ coincidences. The measured relative population of excited states in 82 Ge is compared with a βn emission model, where the neutron emission model combines the strength distribution obtained from the shell-model calculations with the statistical Hauser-Feshbach model.

Search for the Higgs boson decays to a ρ 0 , ϕ, or K ⁎0 meson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

Three rare decay processes of the Higgs boson to a ρ(770) 0 , Φ(1020), or K ⁎ (892) 0 meson and a photon are searched for using $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Events are selected assuming the mesons decay into a pair of charged pions, a pair of charged kaons, or a charged kaon and pion, respectively. Depending on the Higgs boson production mode, different triggering and reconstruction techniques are adopted. The analyzed data sets correspond to integrated luminosities up to 138 fb -1 , depending on the reconstructed final state. After combining various data sets and categories, no significant excess above the background expectations is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson branching fractions into ρ(770) 0 $γ$, Φ(1020)$γ$, and K ⁎ (892) 0 are determined to be 3.7 x 10 -4 , 3.0 x 10 -4 , and 3.0 x 10 -4 , respectively. In case of the ρ(770) 0 $γ$ and Φ(1020)$γ$ channels, these are the most stringent experimental limits to date.

Angular analysis of the B 0 → K ⁎ (892) 0 μ + μ − decay in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A full set of optimized observables is measured in an angular analysis of the decay B 0 → K* (892) 0 μ + μ – using a sample of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140fb –1 . The analysis is performed in six bins of the squared invariant mass of the dimuon system, q 2 , over the range 1.1 < q 2 < 16 GeV 2 . The results are among the most precise experimental measurements of the angular observables for this decay and are compared to a variety of predictions based on the standard model. Some of these predictions exhibit tension with the measurements.

Vibrational Spin-Orbit Coupling Contributions to Excited State Decay of Ligand-to-Ligand Charge Transfer States

Controlling excited state relaxation processes is important in a variety of photochemical and photophysical processes, including the generation of ground and excited state spin polarization for quantum information science applications. Here, we address how specific static distortions – based on vibrational spin-orbit active modes at C2v symmetry determined by group theory – in a series of low-symmetry ligand-to-ligand charge transfer complexes enable direct spin-orbit coupling contributions to T1 → S0 excited state decay. These results are used to address spin-vibronic coupling contributions to T1 → S0 decay in a high-symmetry (tBu2bpy)Pt(S,S) (tBu2bpy = 4,4’-di-tert-butyl-2,2’-bipyridine and S,S = benzene-1,2-dithiolate) ligand-to-ligand charge transfer complex with effective C2v symmetry, where T1 relaxation is both spin- and orbitally forbidden due to the direct spin-orbit coupling matrix element being zero by symmetry. Low-frequency vibrations that involve a pyridine-pyridine twisting motion within the bpy ligand generate large ∂/∂Qi values that will contribute significantly to T1 → S0 relaxation. The work advances ligand design strategies for the generation of tailored T1 → S0 relaxation rates, which can be utilized to optimize the generation of electron spin polarization in radical-elaborated ligand-to-ligand charge transfer complexes.

Pathfinding quantum simulations of neutrinoless double- β decay

We present results from co-designed quantum simulations of the neutrinoless double- β decay of a simple nucleus in 1+1D quantum chromodynamics using IonQ’s Forte-generation trapped-ion quantum computers. Electrons, neutrinos, and up and down quarks are distributed across two lattice sites and mapped to 32 qubits, with an additional 4 qubits used for flag-based error mitigation. A four-fermion interaction is used to implement weak interactions, and lepton-number violation is induced by a neutrino Majorana mass. Quantum circuits that prepare the initial nucleus and time evolve with the Hamiltonian containing the strong and weak interactions are executed on IonQ Forte Enterprise. Enabled by tuned model parameters, lepton-number violation is observed in real time, providing a clear signal of neutrinoless double- β decay. This was made possible by co-designing the simulation to maximally utilize the all-to-all connectivity and native gate-set available on IonQ’s quantum computers. Quantum circuit compilation techniques and co-designed error-mitigation methods, informed from executing benchmarking circuits with up to 2,356 two-qubit gates, enabled observables to be extracted with high precision. We discuss the potential of future quantum simulations to provide yocto-second resolution of the reaction pathways in these, and other, nuclear processes.

Observation of the decays 𝐵 + → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) ++ $\bar{Ξ}^-_c$ and 𝐵 0 → Σ 𝑐 ⁢(2455) 0⁢ $\bar{Ξ}^0_𝑐$

$Ξ$ 𝑐 → $Ξ$ form factors from lattice QCD with domain-wall quarks: A new piece in the puzzle of $Ξ^0_𝑐$ decay rates

We present a lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) determination of the vector and axial-vector form factors that describe the charm-baryon semileptonic decays Ξ 𝑐 → Ξ⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ . The calculation uses a domain-wall action for the up, down, and strange quarks, and an anisotropic clover action for the charm quark. We use four ensembles of gauge-field configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations, with lattice spacings between 0.111 and 0.073 fm and pion masses ranging from 420 to 230 MeV. We present Standard Model predictions for the decay rates and branching fractions of Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ$^−_𝑐$⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ and Ξ$^+_𝑐$ → Ξ$^0_𝑐$⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ for ℓ =𝑒, 𝜇. In particular, we obtain Γ⁡(Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝜈 𝑒 )/|𝑉 𝑐⁢𝑠 | 2 = 0.2515⁢(73) ps −1 and ℬ⁡(Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ − ⁢𝑒 +⁢ 𝜈 𝑒 ) = 3.58⁢(12)%. These values are higher than those predicted by a previous lattice calculation and substantially higher than the experimentally measured values, but consistent with expectations from approximate 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(3) flavor symmetry.
