Quaternary chalcogenides are attractive for a variety of technological fields of interest due to the diverse physical properties these materials possess. Herein, the structural and thermal properties of the disordered chalcopyrite AgInSnSe 4 are reported revealing a distinct relation between its structure and physical properties. Modeling of the experimental temperature-dependent thermal properties revealed an ultralow thermal conductivity (0.47 Wm -1 K -1 at room temperature) due to lattice anharmonicity, a low speed of sound and a low Debye temperature. Moreover, first principles electronic structure calculations revealed that the Ag-Se tetrahedra within the crystal structure possess relatively weak bonds due to occupied antibonding states from p-d orbital hybridization, which suppress the thermal conductivity. Here, in order to further quantify our findings, we extended our analyses to include comparisons with other ternary and quaternary adamantine materials, all of which possess a fourfold tetrahedral coordination of atoms, in revealing the origin of the thermal properties in AgInSnSe 4 .
Magnesium oxide (MgO) exhibits excellent synergy with cerium oxide (CeO2), serving as either textural or electronic promoters during catalytic reactions. However, achieving well-dispersed CeO2-MgO is technically challenging because they are known not to form solid solutions, and the crystal growth of CeO2 suppresses the structure formation of MgO, leading to MgO being in an inhomogeneous amorphous state within CeO2-MgO. For this reason, most of research groups have been struggling with synthesizing well-dispersed CeO2-MgO. This leads them to focusing on the interaction between the active metal and cerium, overlooking the true role of magnesium. In this study, we successfully synthesized well-dispersed CeO2-MgO via a spray pyrolysis-assisted evaporation-induced self-assembly method, followed by the impregnation of Cu. The location and dispersion of Cu nanoparticles were highly dependent on the MgO distribution. Additionally, we revealed that this significantly influenced the catalytic activity and stability towards the HTS reaction and furthermore supplies electrons to monovalent Cu species, helping maintain the stable electron structure and oxidation state of Cu species considered as active sites. These findings suggest that optimizing the MgO distribution in CeO2-MgO is a promising strategy for developing efficient catalysts for the HTS reaction, emphasizing the role of MgO in designing high-performance catalysts.

The present work is a novel, systematic study of the effect of density functional theory input parameters on the vacancy formation energy (VFE), migration barrier for diffusion, and electronic structure for each element in the CoCrNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA). In particular, the novelties include: (1) calculating the aforementioned properties of Co, Cr, or Ni, in the CoCrNi MEA using magnetic and non-magnetic states, and two versions of the generalized gradient approximation: Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof (PBE) and the PBE version for solids (PBEsol), and (2) a detailed comparison of 0 K activation energy to experimental creep activation energies. First-principles calculations at 0 K are performed using the Vienna ab-initio simulation package. Special quasirandom structures (SQS) and Widom-type substitution are employed. For each element, Co, Cr, or Ni, non-magnetic calculations result in a higher VFE and larger range of calculated values for the configurations studied. The averaged migration barrier is the highest for Co in the CoCrNi for three of four sets of calculation parameters in the configurations studied. Finally, the results indicate that the average 0 K activation energy for diffusion makes up 70–80% of the experimental creep activation energy, depending on the exchange-correlation functional employed.

Phase-pure CuIn 2 Se 4 , a ternary metal chalcogenide that forms in a disordered stannite crystal structure, was synthesized to investigate the structure thermal property relationships as well as reveal the origin of the ultralow thermal conductivity this material possesses over a large temperature range. Modeling of the temperature-dependent heat capacity and thermal conductivity revealed distinctive thermal properties and large lattice anharmonicity. Electron localization function calculations highlight the asymmetric bonding inherent to CuIn 2 Se 4 , which together with lattice anharmonicity directly impacts the thermal properties. Our findings reveal the specific atomic arrangement and bonding governing the thermal properties of this ternary metal chalcogenide. Our findings underscore the specific atomic arrangement and bonding governing the thermal properties in this ternary chalcogenide. This study advances the fundamental understanding of stannites, and our findings can be applied to these and other multinary metal chalcogenides of interest for applications where low thermal conductivity is desirable.
