Supercontinuum generation in oxide and semiconductor materials (InP, Si, GaN, GaAs, PbMoO 4 , YVO 4 , ZGP, TiO 2 , diamond) pumped by radiation of the Cr:ZnS fs-MOPA system

Ultrashort light sources in the middle-infrared range are highly beneficial for applications such as gas molecular spectroscopy, remote sensing, atmospheric science, medical treatments, and light–matter interaction studies. Ultrafast lasers utilizing chromium-doped ZnS/Se (Cr:ZnS/Se) have proven to be robust and stable solutions within this spectral region. Nonlinear spectral broadening is fundamentally important, as it pushes the pulse duration limits imposed by the bandwidth of laser media. In this study, we demonstrate the spectral broadening and supercontinuum generation in several bulk materials, including InP, Si, GaN, GaAs, PbMoO 4 , YVO 4 , diamond, and TiO 2 , using pump radiation with up to 4 W average power centered at 2.35 µm from a Cr:ZnS femtosecond MOPA system. Some of the investigated materials have excellent potential as effective media for middle-infrared supercontinuum generation, demonstrating the feasibility of developing a single-cycle pulse middle-infrared laser system.

Dynamics of the metastable st12 to diamond-cubic transition in germanium characterized by neutron spectroscopy

Data related to the manuscript "Dynamics of the metastable st12 to diamond-cubic transition in germanium characterized by neutron spectroscopy". It includes density of states results for st12-Ge, dc-Ge, amorphous-Ge, and the relaxation of st12-Ge to dc-Ge. It also includes diffractions results for the same relaxation experiment. The experiment was performed on the ARCS spectrometer at the SNS. See the Readme.md file in the data set for more information.

New dynamic diamond anvil cell for time-resolved radial x-ray diffraction

The dynamic diamond anvil cell (dDAC) is a recently developed experimental platform that has shown promise for studying the behavior of materials at strain rates ranging from intermediate to quasi-static and shock compression regimes. Combining dDAC with time-resolved x-ray diffraction (XRD) in the radial geometry (i.e., with incident x-rays perpendicular to the axis of compression) enables the study of material properties such as strength, texture evolution, and deformation mechanisms. This work describes a radial XRD dDAC setup at beamline P02.2 (Extreme Conditions Beamline) at DESY’s PETRA III synchrotron. Time-resolved radial XRD data are collected for titanium, zirconium, and zircon samples, demonstrating the ability to study the strength and texture of materials at compression rates above 300 GPa/s. In addition, the simultaneous optical imaging of the DAC sample chamber is demonstrated. The ability to conduct simultaneous radial XRD and optical imaging provides the opportunity to characterize plastic strain and deviatoric strain rates in the DAC at intermediate rates, exploring the strength and deformation mechanisms of materials in this regime.

Nitrogen Vacancy Center in Diamond for the Stress and Field Sensing Applications

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in a nanodiamond (ND) crystal is a promising material for quantum information processing, sensing, and computing applications. It is one of the best candidate materials for quantum sensing and metrology expected to work at elevated temperatures and pressures conditions. We computationally show the effect of strain on the defect band edges and band gaps in the NV center diamond. A low energy Hamiltonian is developed for the ±1 spin manifold at the ground state. We show the quantum sensing device is a few orders of magnitude superior in sensing than the traditional optical sensing devices. We also discuss experimental results from the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) and the spin relaxometry for the field sensing applications. The presentation concludes by providing a model for free spins detection of the rare earth ions.

Purcell Enhancement of Tin-Vacancy Centers in Thin-Film Diamond Cavities

We couple tin-vacancy (SnV-) centers in thin-film diamond to one-dimensional photonic crystal cavities of different orientations and develop a spontaneous emission model that rigorously quantifies Purcell factors and the branching ratio of the zero-phonon line (ZPL) transitions.

Synthesis of diamonds

Shock wave transmitted through a solid exponential horn generates heat and pressure to convert part of a charge of graphite to diamonds. The shock wave is generated in the apparatus by a complex of magnetic fields and eddy currents.
