Comparative performance of double-focus and quadrupole mass spectrometers

Light-weight flight type double focus and quadruple mass spectrometer models were compared. Data cover size, weight, and power sensitivity required to achieve same resolution sensitivity at given mass number. Comparison was made using mathematical relationships. Analysis was confined to equal ion source area sensitivity variations not more than 40% over mass range.

Thin electrostatically self-focusing electron streams.

Study of 30 to 380 microampere, 50 to 550 V, 1 to 2 mm, electrostatically self-focusing electron streams (50 cm long) drifting through mercury vapor (at 50 microtorr to 2 millitorr) in a tube with a radius of 6.6 cm. The inside surface of the tube is coated with a transparent layer whose resistivity is 50 ohm-cm per centimeter. In order to determine the charged-particle densities and the potential profile in and around the beam without disturbing the system, a multigrid electrostatic charged particle energy analyzer was used to study separately the energy distributions of both ions and electrons ejected radially from the beam. The results show two energy groupings for electrons. The energy distribution of the high-energy group is produced by ionizing collisions between beam electrons and neutral gas atoms; a group of flow-energy electrons becomes trapped in the potential well within and around the beam, subsequently escaping by collisional mechanisms.

Direct observation of the orientational Kerr effect in the self-focusing of picosecond pulses.

Direct measurements of the relaxation time of the birefringence within the self-focusing region of mode-locked laser pulses in several anisotropic liquids establish the importance of the orientational Kerr effect in the picosecond time regime. This result leads to some speculation as to the origin of the high degree of symmetry in the phase-modulated filament spectra observed with picosecond pulses.

Single-cycle electron acceleration in focused laser fields.

The possibility of accelerating particles with a focused laser is considered. The particle is accelerated transversely by the electric field and redirected to the forward direction within a single half-cycle by the magnetic field of the radiation. The equations of motion of the particle are solved and discussed. Special attention is given to an intuitive understanding of the constraint imposed by the geometry of the focal region. Optimum conditions are examined.

Performance characteristics of proximity focused ultraviolet image converters

Performance characteristics of Bendix type BX 8025-4522 proximity focused image tubes for ultraviolet to visible light conversion are presented. Quantum efficiency, resolution, background, geometric distortion, and environmental test results are discussed. The converters use magnesium fluoride input windows with Cs - Te photocathodes, and P-11 phosphors on fiber optic output windows.

Current sheet collapse in a plasma focus.

Collapse of the current sheets in a plasma focus has been recorded simultaneously through slits parallel and perpendicular to the symmetry axis in the streak mode. The dark period following the collapse is due to the plasma moving out of the field of view. Microdensitometric measurements of intensity variation also support this conclusion. A large anisotropy is also found in the x-ray radiation pattern. Effects of different vacuum vessels were investigated.

Anisotropy of the neutron fluence from a plasma focus.

The fluence of neutrons from a plasma focus was measured by gamma spectrometry of an activated silver target. This method results in a significant increase in accuracy over the beta-counting method. Multiple detectors were used in order to measure the anisotropy of the fluence of neutrons. The fluence was found to be concentrated in a cone with a half-angle of 30 deg about the axis, and to drop off rapidly outside of this cone; the anisotropy was found to depend upon the total yield of neutrons. This dependence was strongest on the axis. Neither the axial concentration of the fluence of neutrons nor its dependence on the total yield of neutrons is explained by any of the currently proposed models. Some other explanations, including the possibility of an axially distributed source, are considered.

Nearly spherical constant-power detonation waves as driven by focused radiation.

Analysis is made of the flow within a 3-D spark created in a gas absorbing energy from a steady conical beam of radiation (typically obtained from an array of lasers) with nearly spherical symmetry. First-order deviations are represented by series of Legendre polynomials of the polar angle. Self-similarity is demonstrated. For harmonics 1 to 5 radial profiles of velocity components, density and pressure are presented. The linear perturbation scheme exhibits a singularity at the focus. This reflects the existence of a 'forbidden zone', as is shown by a study of the full non-linear flow equations.

Ion kinematics in a plasma focus.

The results of numerical integrations of three-dimensional equations of motion of ions subject to given electric and magnetic fields are presented. The fields represent those which may exist in the pinch phase of the plasma focus, although here they depend only on the radial coordinate. The ions initially have Maxwellian velocity distributions, and their trajectories are interpreted in terms of single-particle constants of the motion. Two models of the axial electric field Ez are considered. For strong Ez away from the axis, there is a cyclotron acceleration which leads to ion heating. For positive Ez on the axis, ions within a Larmor radius of the axis undergo very efficient acceleration; the results for this new model are in general agreement with experimental results.

Conical focusing crystal spectrometers for cosmic X-ray astronomy

A crystal spectrometer for rocket and satellite experiments is described. Parallel X rays from a stellar object are reflected at constant angle by Bragg crystals arranged around the sector of a cone so that a single wavelength is brought to a focus onto the axis of the cone. The aberrations produced when this array is tilted to change the wavelength are considered. It is shown that these are minimized by moving cone and detector in a nearly theta to two-theta motion and by using a small-angle sector. In a specific design for a satellite instrument using LiF crystal to observe a spectral region including the iron lines at 1.9 A, a spectral resolution of 3 mA over a spectral range of 1.6-2.1 A can be obtained, with the cosmic-ray background rate, and hence the time to detect a weak line decreased by a factor 80 compared to a flat crystal spectrometer. Examples of performance for a low energy rocket experiment are also given.

Nearly spherical constant-power detonation waves as driven by focused radiation

An analysis is made of the flow within a three-dimensional explosion, or spark, created in a gas absorbing energy from a steady conical beam of radiation with nearly spherical symmetry. The radiation, typically from an array of lasers with a common focus, is assumed to be very intense and absorbed immediately behind an outwardly advancing strong shock. Departures of the laser power from spherical uniformity, which would result from practical problems of arrangement, are conveniently represented by an ascending series of Legendre polynomials in the polar angle. For nonuniformities of small amplitude, first-order perturbations of the flow field are analyzed in detail. Self-similarity is shown to be retained for zero counter-pressure and power constant with time. For the first five harmonics in power distortion, the resulting fourth-order system of equations is solved numerically for profiles of velocity components, density, pressure, and shock shape. Results are presented graphically.

Instabilities in self-focused electron beams

The appearance of large amplitude oscillations and attenuation of beam current have been observed in high perveance electrically self-focused beams. These phenomena are shown to be due to instabilities produced by the interaction of the beam with its self-generated plasma. The critical current which must be exceeded for the instabilities to appear and the frequencies of the oscillations have been related to beam and background parameters and the dimensions of the experimental system.
