This report details work performed at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in support of an interlaboratory uranium (U) benchmarking collaboration between LANL, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa). The goal of this interlaboratory benchmarking exercise is to compare analytical methods and data obtained on uranium reference materials CUP-2 and New Brunswick Laboratory (NBL) certified reference material (CRM) 124-2. The LANL commitments for this project include performing microwave digestion of fresh CUP-2 and CRM 124-2 powders, measuring the U isotope composition of CUP-2 and CRM 124-2 by both single-collector and multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SC-ICP-MS and MC-ICP-MS, respectively), and determining trace-element abundances in CUP-2 and CRM 124-2 by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This report details the methods employed by LANL in support of these objectives and presents the data obtained during this collaborative exercise.

The ATONA technology has the potential to impact measurement capabilities in the broad field nuclear forensics, and not just for uranium. We remain cautiously optimistic that we can develop ATONA based environmental measurement techniques that will be of use to some of our partners.

Nuclear forensics is the collection and analysis of nuclear or radiological material to support investigations into the diversion, trafficking, or illicit activities involving materials. The goal is to link nuclear or radioactive material to people, processes, events and/or locations.

High precision analyses demonstrate the ability to measure very small differences between sample aliquots. Is it appropriate for us to assume a homogenous sample in ES exercises? When running aliquots in triplicate should the data be averaged? If averaged what uncertainty should be applied, and what does the uncertainty describe? What is the most appropriate uncertainty to apply on single measurements?

Requests for ultra-low-level 237 Np analyses highlight the importance of a robust chemical purification and measurement technique for Np. In FY2022, LANL is quantifying the instrumental 237 Np LoD. Need to incorporate a chemical purification procedure for TIMS-MICTE sample preparation. What is the recovery of the chemical purification procedure? What is the ultimate detection limit that can be achieved while incorporating a chemical purification procedure? We have adapted and refined the Pu TIMS-MICTE method for Np analyses. We have determined expected uncertainties for 237 Np TIMS-MICTE measurements. We have increased sensitivity through technique improvements. We have improved method reliability for Np analyses and increased throughput. Apply knowledge gained from progress made in FY2022 to further develop Np sample purification and analyses by TIMSMICTE.
Measurable quantities of U in Turtle and Tortoise scute. Turtle samples from areas of known history of radionuclide releases found to have non-natural U isotope signatures. These signatures match what we know about the release of uranium radionuclides at each site. Able to determine quantifiable changes in the U concentration and isotope composition along individual layers of growth (representing seven years of life). Possible correlations with historical releases of U from Oak Ridge site.

Three important upgrades provide unsurpassed TIMS measurement capabilities 1. HI-VAC (installed 5 of 7 instruments) 2. ATONA Faraday amplification (2 of 7 instrument) 3. Multiple ion-counting system for ultra-low level detection (installed 4 of 7 instruments).
Climate and its impacts on the natural environment, and on the ability of the natural environment to support population and the built environment, stands as a threat multiplier that impacts national and global security. The Water Intersections with Climate Systems Security (WICSS) Strategic Initiative is designed to improve understanding of water’s role in, among other topics, the connection of critical infrastructure to climate in light of competing national and global security interests (including transboundary issues and stability), and identifying research gaps aligned with Sandia, and Federal agency priorities. With this impetus in mind, the WICSS Strategic Initiative team conceptualized a causal loop diagram (CLD) of the relationship between and among climate, the natural environment, population, and the built environment, with an understanding that any such regionally focused system must have externalities that influence the system from beyond its’ control, and metrics for better understanding the consequences of the set of interactions. These are discussed in light of a series of worldviews that focus on portions of the overall systems relationship. The relationships are described and documented in detail. A set of reinforcing and balancing loops are then highlighted within the context of the model. Finally, forward-looking actions are highlighted to describe how this conceptual model can be turned into modeling to address multiple problems described under the purview of the Strategic Initiative.
