Symposium on Technology Status and Trends

The objective of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Technology Utilization Program is to identify, document, and transfer to the national economy the technical advances resulting from our space and research programs. These innovations, when properly applied in industry and business, hold great promise for improving our everyday life and contributing to the prosperity of the nation. We believe that the knowledge, progress, and advances associated with aerospace technology contain major potential for industrial applications. The content and method of presenting symposium papers by Marshall and selected contractor personnel have been designed to transfer an awareness of at least some new technology to attendees in nonaerospace fields.

TROPIX: A solar electric propulsion flight experiment

The Transfer Orbit Plasma Interaction Experiment (TROPIX) is a proposed scientific experiment and flight demonstration of a solar electric propulsion vehicle. Its mission goals are to significantly increase our knowledge of Earth's magnetosphere and its associated plasma environment and to demonstrate an operational solar electric upper stage (SEUS) for small launch vehicles. The scientific investigations and flight demonstration technology experiments are uniquely interrelated because of the spacecraft's interaction with the surrounding environment. The data obtained will complement previous studies of the Earth's magnetosphere and space plasma environment by supplying the knowledge necessary to attain the strategic objectives of the NASA Office of Space Science. This first operational use of a primary ion propulsion vehicle, designed to withstand the harsh environments from low Earth orbit to geosynchronous Earth orbit, may lead to the development of a new class of electric propulsion upper stages or space-based transfer vehicles and may improve future spacecraft design and safety.

The Effects of Long-Duration Spaceflight on Training Retention and Transfer

Training our crew members for long duration, exploration-class missions will have to maximize long-term retention and transfer of the trained skills. The expected duration of the missions, our inability to predict all the possible tasks the crew will be called upon to perform, and the low training-to-mission time ratio require that the training be maximally effective such that the skills acquired during training will be retained and will be transferrable across a wide range of specific tasks that are different from the particular tasks used during training. However, to be able to design training that can achieve these ambitious goals, we must first understand the ways in which long-duration spaceflight affects training retention and transfer. Current theories of training retention and transfer are largely based on experimental studies conducted at university laboratories using undergraduate students as participants. Furthermore, all such studies have been conducted on Earth. We do not know how well the results of these studies predict the performance of crew members. More specifically, we do not know how well the results of these studies predict the performance of crew members in space and especially during long-duration missions. To address this gap in our knowledge, the current on-going study seeks to test the null hypothesis that performance of university undergraduate students on Earth on training retention and transfer tests do in fact predict accurately the performance of crew members during long-duration spaceflights. To test this hypothesis, the study employs a single 16-month long experimental protocol with 3 different participant groups: undergraduate university students, crew members on the ground, and crew members in space. Results from this study will be presented upon its completion. This poster presents results of study trials of the two tasks used in this study: a data entry task and a mapping task. By researching established training principles, by examining future needs, and by using current practices in spaceflight training as test beds, this research project is mitigating program risks and generating templates and requirements to meet future training needs.

Hiperclust

This software leverages transfer learning to analyze atom probe tomography (APT) data. It is trained on synthetic data and then applies this knowledge to predict the optimal number of clusters for a given APT dataset. Initially, the software used preliminary clustering to estimate the general structure of the data. Based on this, it provides suggestions for key parameters like minimum cluster size and minimum number of points. These parameters are critical for algorithms like HDBSCAN, ensuring accurate cluster formation without the need for trial-and-error testing. The software runs on High-Performance computing (HPC) systems, enabling fast, scalable analysis of large APT datasets, ultimately saving time and improving the reliability of clustering outcomes.

The Calculation of the Heat Required for Wing Thermal Ice Prevention in Specified Icing Conditions

Flight tests were made in natural icing conditions with two 8-ft-chord heated airfoils of different sections. Measurements of meteorological variables conducive to ice formation were made simultaneously with the procurement of airfoil thermal data. The extent of knowledge on the meteorology of icing, the impingement of water drops on airfoil surfaces, and the processes of heat transfer and evaporation from a wetted airfoil surface have been increased to a point where the design of heated wings on a fundamental, wet-air basis now can be undertaken with reasonable certainty.

The NASA Materials Science Research Program - It's New Strategic Goals and Plans

In 2001, the NASA created a separate science enterprise, the Office of Biological and Physical Research (OBPR), to perform strategical and fundamental research bringing together physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering to solve problems needed for future agency mission goals. The Materials Science Program is one of basic research disciplines within this new Enterprise's Division of Physical Sciences Research. The Materials Science Program participates to utilize effective use of International Space Station (ISS) experimental facilities, target new scientific and technology questions, and transfer results for Earth benefits. The program has recently pursued new investigative research in areas necessary to expand NASA knowledge base for exploration of the universe, some of which will need access to the microgravity of space. The program has a wide variety of traditional ground and flight based research related types of basic science related to materials crystallization, fundamental processing, and properties characterization in order to obtain basic understanding of various phenomena effects and relationships to the structures, processing, and properties of materials. A summary of the types and sources for this research is presented and those experiments planned for the space. Areas to help expand the science basis for NASA future missions are described. An overview of the program is given including the scope of the current and future NASA Research Announcements with emphasis on new materials science initiatives. A description of the planned flight experiments to be conducted on the International Space Station program along with the planned facility class Materials Science Research Rack (MSRR) and Microgravity Glovebox (MSG) type investigations.

Cryogenic Propellant Storage and Transfer Engineering Development Unit Hydrogen Tank

The Cryogenic Propellant Storage and Transfer (CPST) project has been a long-running program in the Space Technology Mission Directorate to enhance the knowledge and technology related to handling cryogenic propellants, specifically liquid hydrogen. This particular effort, the CPST engineering development unit (EDU), was a proof of manufacturability effort in support of a flight article. The EDU was built to find and overcome issues related to manufacturability and collect data to anchor the thermal models for use on the flight design.

Measuring Vibronic Coupling and Ultrafast Charge Delocalization on Nanocrystal Surfaces Using Ligand-Specific Vibrational Probes

The primary goal of this proposal was to measure and quantify how vibronic ligand-exciton interactions at the inorganic-organic interface of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) govern femtosecond non-radiative relaxation and charge delocalization mechanisms as a function of nanocrystal and ligand structures – including NC size, shape, and ligand identity. Molecular-scale chemical and physical properties and interactions of surface ligands dictate nanocrystal exciton dynamics on the femto-to-microsecond timescales. Improvements in synthesis, experimental, and theoretical characterizations have enhanced our understanding of NC photophysics. However, quantitative descriptions of complex ligand-exciton interactions at the NC surface have remained elusive, which limits elucidation of relaxation mechanisms that determine overall carrier transfer dynamics at the exciton-ligand interface. Thus, the central motivation for this proposal was to fill a significant knowledge gap for judicious selection of ligand-functionalized nanocrystals for targeted isolation and capture of charge carriers to drive selective organic photocatalytic transformations in NC photocatalysts and NC-assembled photonic materials. Our unique two-pronged experimental approach combining nanocrystal synthesis and ligand-specific nonlinear spectroscopy has resulted in (i) four peer-reviewed publications; (ii) 12+ invited and contributed posters and talks at national and international scientific meetings and seminars, (iii) two completed PhD theses, (iv) training of two postdoctoral researchers, three PhD students, and two undergraduate students, and (v) two manuscripts under preparation.

Tools and technologies for expert systems: A human factors perspective

It is widely recognized that technologies based on artificial intelligence (AI), especially expert systems, can make significant contributions to the productivity and effectiveness of operations of information and knowledge intensive organizations such as NASA. At the same time, these being relatively new technologies, there is the problem of transfering technology to key personnel of such organizations. The problems of examining the potential of expert systems and of technology transfer is addressed in the context of human factors applications. One of the topics of interest was the investigation of the potential use of expert system building tools, particularly NEXPERT as a technology transfer medium. Two basic conclusions were reached in this regard. First, NEXPERT is an excellent tool for rapid prototyping of experimental expert systems, but not ideal as a delivery vehicle. Therefore, it is not a substitute for general purpose system implementation languages such a LISP or C. This assertion probably holds for nearly all such tools on the market today. Second, an effective technology transfer mechanism is to formulate and implement expert systems for problems which members of the organization in question can relate to. For this purpose, the LIghting EnGineering Expert (LIEGE) was implemented using NEXPERT as the tool for technology transfer and to illustrate the value of expert systems to the activities of the Man-System Division.

NASA's Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) Mission

The Soil Moisture Active-Passive (SMAP) Mission is one of the first Earth observation satellites being formulated by NASA in response to the 2007 National Research Council s Decadal Survey. SMAP will make global measurements of soil moisture at the Earth's land surface and its freeze-thaw state. These measurements will allow significantly improved estimates of water, energy and carbon transfers between the land and atmosphere. Soil moisture measurements are also of great importance in assessing flooding and monitoring drought. Knowledge gained from SMAP observations can help mitigate these natural hazards, resulting in potentially great economic and social benefits. SMAP observations of soil moisture and freeze/thaw timing over the boreal latitudes will also reduce a major uncertainty in quantifying the global carbon balance and help to resolve an apparent missing carbon sink over land. The SMAP mission concept will utilize an L-band radar and radiometer sharing a rotating 6-meter mesh reflector antenna flying in a 680 km polar orbit with an 8-day exact ground track repeat aboard a 3-axis stabilized spacecraft to provide high-resolution and high-accuracy global maps of soil moisture and freeze/thaw state every two to three days. In addition, the SMAP project will use these surface observations with advanced modeling and data assimilation to provide estimates of deeper root-zone soil moisture and net ecosystem exchange of carbon. SMAP recently completed its Phase A Mission Concept Study Phase for NASA and transitioned into Phase B (Formulation and Detailed Design). A number of significant accomplishments occurred during this initial phase of mission development. The SMAP project held several open meetings to solicit community feedback on possible science algorithms, prepared preliminary draft Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents (ATBDs) for each mission science product, and established a prototype algorithm testbed to enable testing and evaluation of the performance of candidate algorithms. SMAP conducted an Applications Workshop in September 2009 to coordinate with potential application users interested in the mission data. A draft Applications Plan describing the Project s planned outreach to potential applications users has been prepared and will be updated during Phase B. SMAP made a significant evaluation of the potential terrestrial radio frequency interference (RFI) source environment and established radiometer and radar flight hardware and ground processing mitigation approaches. SMAP finalized its science orbit and orbit injection approach to optimize launch mass and prepared launch and commissioning scenarios and timeline. A science data communications approach was developed to maximize available science data volume to improve science margins while maintaining moderately short data product latencies to support many potential applications using existing ground assets and with minimum impact to the flight system. SMAP developed rigid multi-body and flexible body dynamics and control models and system designs for the 6-meter rotating instrument reflector-boom assembly (RBA) and flight system to confirm pointing and control performance, and devised strategies to efficiently implement on-orbit balancing if needed. Industry partners were selected for the spin mechanism assembly (SMA) and RBA. Preliminary designs for the radar and radiometer were initiated, including constructing breadboards of key assemblies.

Impact of Footprint Diameter and Off-Nadir Pointing on the Precision of Canopy Height Estimates from Spaceborne Lidar

A spaceborne lidar mission could serve multiple scientific purposes including remote sensing of ecosystem structure, carbon storage, terrestrial topography and ice sheet monitoring. The measurement requirements of these different goals will require compromises in sensor design. Footprint diameters that would be larger than optimal for vegetation studies have been proposed. Some spaceborne lidar mission designs include the possibility that a lidar sensor would share a platform with another sensor, which might require off-nadir pointing at angles of up to 16 . To resolve multiple mission goals and sensor requirements, detailed knowledge of the sensitivity of sensor performance to these aspects of mission design is required. This research used a radiative transfer model to investigate the sensitivity of forest height estimates to footprint diameter, off-nadir pointing and their interaction over a range of forest canopy properties. An individual-based forest model was used to simulate stands of mixed conifer forest in the Tahoe National Forest (Northern California, USA) and stands of deciduous forests in the Bartlett Experimental Forest (New Hampshire, USA). Waveforms were simulated for stands generated by a forest succession model using footprint diameters of 20 m to 70 m. Off-nadir angles of 0 to 16 were considered for a 25 m diameter footprint diameter. Footprint diameters in the range of 25 m to 30 m were optimal for estimates of maximum forest height (R(sup 2) of 0.95 and RMSE of 3 m). As expected, the contribution of vegetation height to the vertical extent of the waveform decreased with larger footprints, while the contribution of terrain slope increased. Precision of estimates decreased with an increasing off-nadir pointing angle, but off-nadir pointing had less impact on height estimates in deciduous forests than in coniferous forests. When pointing off-nadir, the decrease in precision was dependent on local incidence angle (the angle between the off-nadir beam and a line normal to the terrain surface) which is dependent on the off-nadir pointing angle, terrain slope, and the difference between the laser pointing azimuth and terrain aspect; the effect was larger when the sensor was aligned with the terrain azimuth but when aspect and azimuth are opposed, there was virtually no effect on R2 or RMSE. A second effect of off-nadir pointing is that the laser beam will intersect individual crowns and the canopy as a whole from a different angle which had a distinct effect on the precision of lidar estimates of height, decreasing R2 and increasing RMSE, although the effect was most pronounced for coniferous crowns.

Cyclometallated Co(III) Complexes with Lowest-Energy Charge Transfer Excited States Accessible with Visible Light

The Co(III) complexes, cis-[Co(ppy) 2 (L)]PF 6 , where ppy = 2-phenylpyridine and L = bpy (2,2′-bipyridine; 1), phen (1,10-phenanthroline; 2), and DAP (1,12-diazaperylene; 3), are reported and their photophysical properties were investigated to evaluate their potential as sensitizers for applications that include solar energy conversion schemes and photoredox catalysis. Calculations show that cyclometallation in the cis-[Co(ppy) 2 (L)]PF 6 series affords strong Co(dπ)/ppy(π) orbital interactions that result in a Co/ppy(π*) highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and a lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) localized on the diimine ligand, L(π*). Complexes 1–3 exhibit relatively invariant oxidation potentials, whereas the reduction event is dependent on the identity of the diimine ligand, L, consistent with the theoretical predictions. For 3 a broad Co/ppy(π*) → L(π*) metal/ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (ML-LCT) absorption band is observed in CH 3 CN with a maxima at 507 nm, extending beyond 600 nm. Upon excitation of the 1ML-LCT transition, transient absorption features consistent with the population of a 3 ML-LCT excited state with lifetimes, τ, of 3.0 ps, 4.6 and 42 ps for 1, 2 and 3 in CH 3 CN respectively are observed. Upon irradiation with 505 nm, 3 is able to reduce methyl viologen (MV 2+ ), an electron acceptor commonly in photocatalytic schemes. Here, to our knowledge, 3 represents the first heteroleptic molecular Co(III) complex that combines cyclometallation with a diimine ligand with lowest-lying metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited states able to undergo photoinduced charge transfer with low-energy green light. As such, the structural design of 3 represents an important step toward d6 photosensitizers based on earth abundant metals.

Kate's Model Verification Tools

Kennedy Space Center's Knowledge-based Autonomous Test Engineer (KATE) is capable of monitoring electromechanical systems, diagnosing their errors, and even repairing them when they crash. A survey of KATE's developer/modelers revealed that they were already using a sophisticated set of productivity enhancing tools. They did request five more, however, and those make up the body of the information presented here: (1) a transfer function code fitter; (2) a FORTRAN-Lisp translator; (3) three existing structural consistency checkers to aid in syntax checking their modeled device frames; (4) an automated procedure for calibrating knowledge base admittances to protect KATE's hardware mockups from inadvertent hand valve twiddling; and (5) three alternatives for the 'pseudo object', a programming patch that currently apprises KATE's modeling devices of their operational environments.

An Evidence-based Approach to Developing a Management Strategy for Medical Contingencies on the Lunar Surface: The NASA/Haughton-Mars Project (HMP) 2006 Lunar Medical Contingency Simulation at Devon Island

The lunar architecture for future sortie and outpost missions will require humans to serve on the lunar surface considerably longer than the Apollo moon missions. Although the Apollo crewmembers sustained few injuries during their brief lunar surface activity, injuries did occur and are a concern for the longer lunar stays. Interestingly, lunar medical contingency plans were not developed during Apollo. In order to develop an evidence-base for handling a medical contingency on the lunar surface, a simulation using the moon-Mars analog environment at Devon Island, Nunavut, high Canadian Arctic was conducted. Objectives of this study included developing an effective management strategy for dealing with an incapacitated crewmember on the lunar surface, establishing audio/visual and biomedical data connectivity to multiple centers, testing rescue/extraction hardware and procedures, and evaluating in suit increased oxygen consumption. Methods: A review of the Apollo lunar surface activities and personal communications with Apollo lunar crewmembers provided the knowledge base of plausible scenarios that could potentially injure an astronaut during a lunar extravehicular activity (EVA). Objectives were established to demonstrate stabilization and transfer of an injured crewmember and communication with ground controllers at multiple mission control centers. Results: The project objectives were successfully achieved during the simulation. Among these objectives were extraction from a sloped terrain by a two-member crew in a 1 g analog environment, establishing real-time communication to multiple centers, providing biomedical data to flight controllers and crewmembers, and establishing a medical diagnosis and treatment plan from a remote site. Discussion: The simulation provided evidence for the types of equipment and methods for performing extraction of an injured crewmember from a sloped terrain. Additionally, the necessary communications infrastructure to connect multiple centers worldwide was established from a remote site. The surface crewmembers were confronted with a number of unexpected scenarios including environmental, communications, EVA suit, and navigation challenges during the course of the simulation which provided insight into the challenges of carrying out a medical contingency in an austere environment. The knowledge gained from completing the objectives will be incorporated into the exploration medical requirements involving an incapacitated astronaut on the lunar surface.

Digital Twin for Chemical Science (DTCS) v0.01

Directly visualizing the trajectories of chemistry can unravel novel insights into the behavior of catalysts, gas phase reactions, photo-induced dynamics, and building blocks for quantum information processing. The ability of explicitly identifying, tracking, and tagging the exchange of matter, hence the annihilation and creation of new chemical species, can be best realized through a close coupling of theory and experiment. While the synchrotron-based characterization facilities propelled rapidly in its hardware, providing higher brightness, better resolution, and more precision, the software infrastructure is lagging. We developed DTCS (Digital Twin for Chemical Science) v.01, a central platform that faithfully mimics advanced instrumentations in Scientific User Facilities, by solving a variety of technical challenges in data acquisition, analysis, and model-driven interpretation. Rooted in physics and accelerated by AI, we validated this concept by direct comparison with precise experimental X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) observations using a ubiquitous metal-water interfacial scenario, i.e., Ag/H2O as our main narrative. The DTCS v.01 input mirrors how the bench chemists work, with the output directly linked to the end station computer, thereby providing a user-friendly, knowledge-driven, and accessible user experience with mechanistic insights standardized in a way that are ready to be published, versioned, and transferred flexibly.

Furthermore, at reduced gravity other nongravity forces such as surface or interfacial tensions, g-jitter, therma-volume expansions, density differences due to phase changes, and magnetic and electric fields can induce fluid motions. The various types of flow possible with these various driving forces are described and criteria for determining the extent and nature of the resulting flows and heat transfer are presented. The various physical mechanisms that can occur separately and in combination are indicated and the present state of knowledge of each of the phenomena is outlined.
