RbB 3 Si 3 : An Alkali Metal Borosilicide that is Metastable and Superconducting at 1 atm

The stability, electronic structure and potential superconductivity in AB 3 Si 3 (A = Na, K, Rb, and Cs) compounds that assume the clathrate-based sodalite structure whose frameworks consists of covalent B-Si bonds is investigated via first-principles calculations. This structure type has recently been predicted in a number of high temperature superconducting hydrides, but these are only stable under megabar pressures. Herein, we predict a novel superconducting phase, RbB 3 Si 3 , that could be synthesized under pressures that are a factor of ten smaller, ~10 GPa, and quenched to atmospheric conditions. Electron-phonon coupling calculations predict that RbB 3 Si 3 possesses a superconducting critical temperature, T c , of 14 K at 1 atm. Here, the dynamic stability of RbB 3 Si 3 and CsB 3 Si 3 at ambient pressure can be explained by considering the chemical pressure exerted on the B-Si framework that is caused by the size effect of the alkali metal atom.

Revealing Hot and Long-Lived Metastable Spin States in the Photoinduced Switching of Solvated Metallogrid Complexes with Femtosecond Optical and X-ray Spectroscopies

An atomistic understanding of the photoinduced spin-state switching (PSS) within polynuclear systems of d 4 –d 7 transition metal ion complexes is required for their rational integration into light-driven reactions of chemical and biological interest. However, in contrast to mononuclear systems, the multidimensional dynamics of the PSS in solvated molecular arrays have not yet been elucidated due to the expected complications associated with the connectivity between the metal centers and the strong interactions with the surroundings. Herein, the PSS in a solvated triiron(II) metallogrid complex is characterized using transient optical absorption and X-ray emission spectroscopies on the femtosecond time scale. The complementary measurements reveal the photoinduced creation of energy-rich (hot) and long-lived quintet states, whose dynamics differ critically from their mononuclear congeners. We report this finding opens major prospects for developing novel schemes in solution-phase spin chemistry that are driven by the dynamic PSS process in compact oligometallic arrays.

To Substitute Rather Than Intercalate: Chimie douce Approach to Induce Ferromagnetism in Metastable Pt 0.8 M 0.2 Se 2 ( M = Cr, Co, Ni)

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials with exotic magnetic properties have garnered significant interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and data storage technologies. However, the limited availability of intrinsic 2D magnetic materials has driven efforts to induce and manipulate magnetism in otherwise nonmagnetic 2D systems through approaches such as chemical intercalation, defect engineering, and substitutional doping. Herein, we present a facile, chimie douce method for incorporating 3d transition metals (Cr, Co, and Ni) into the nonmagnetic PtSe 2 sublattice. This synthetic approach enables control over layer thickness of Pt 1–x M x Se 2 (M = Cr, Co, Ni) nanosheets by varying the M identity and annealing conditions. Comprehensive scattering and spectroscopic characterizations confirm the successful and homogeneous substitution of M atoms at the Pt site, rather than intercalation, and reveal a strong correlation between nanosheet thickness and the identity of the substituting metal. High-temperature annealing of the nanosheets promotes an irreversible transformation toward the bulk phase, allowing for detailed characterization of structural and magnetic properties. A case study of Pt 0.8 Cr 0.2 Se 2 reveals that nanosheet thickness plays a critical role in modulating local magnetic interactions. While Cr atoms in the as-synthesized few-layers-thick nanosheets exhibit predominantly short-range antiferromagnetic interactions, the emergence of short-range ferromagnetic exchange is revealed in the bulk material. Detailed ac susceptibility and remanent magnetization measurements further demonstrate that bulk Pt 0.8 Cr 0.2 Se 2 adopts a frustrated magnetic ground state with clear signatures of ferromagnetic cluster-glass behavior. The systematic investigation presented herein establishes a clear and robust protocol for the synthesis and in-depth characterization of 2D transition-metal-substituted PtSe2 materials with varying layer thickness and paves a path toward their realization in spintronic and magnetic device applications.

Engineering new limits to magnetostriction through metastability in iron-gallium alloys

Magnetostrictive materials transduce magnetic and mechanical energies and when combined with piezoelectric elements, evoke magnetoelectric transduction for high-sensitivity magnetic field sensors and energy-efficient beyond-CMOS technologies. The dearth of ductile, rare-earth-free materials with high magnetostrictive coefficients motivates the discovery of superior materials. Fe 1- x Ga x alloys are amongst the highest performing rare-earth-free magnetostrictive materials; however, magnetostriction becomes sharply suppressed beyond x = 19% due to the formation of a parasitic ordered intermetallic phase. Here, we harness epitaxy to extend the stability of the BCC Fe 1- x Ga x alloy to gallium compositions as high as x = 30% and in so doing dramatically boost the magnetostriction by as much as 10x relative to the bulk and 2x larger than canonical rare-earth based magnetostrictors. A Fe 1- x Ga x - [Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 ] 0.7 -[PbTiO 3 ] 0.3 (PMN-PT) composite magnetoelectric shows robust 90° electrical switching of magnetic anisotropy and a converse magnetoelectric coefficient of 2.0 × 10 -5 s m -1 . When optimally scaled, this high coefficient implies stable switching at ~80 aJ per bit.

Harnessing metastability for grain size control in multiprincipal element alloys during additive manufacturing

Abstract Controlling microstructure in fusion-based metal additive manufacturing (AM) remains a significant challenge due to the many parameters that directly impact solidification condition. Multiprincipal element alloys (MPEAs), also known as high entropy alloys, offer a vast compositional space to design for microstructural engineering due to their chemical complexity and exceptional properties. Here, we use the FeMnCoCr system as a model platform for exploring alloy design in MPEAs for AM. By exploiting the decreasing stability of the face-centered cubic phase with increasing Mn content, we achieve notable grain refinement and breakdown of epitaxial columnar grain growth. We employ a multifaceted approach encompassing thermodynamic modeling, operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction, multiscale microstructural characterization, and mechanical testing to gain insight into the solidification physics and its ramifications on the resulting microstructure of FeMnCoCr MPEAs. This work aims toward tailoring desirable grain sizes and morphology through targeted manipulation of phase stability, thereby advancing microstructure control in AM applications.

A metastable tetragonal phase in two-dimensional halide perovskite lattices driven by a coherent Higgs mode

The optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites are defined by their coupled structural and photophysical properties, yet their lattice behaviour remains underexplored. Here, using impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy, we study light-induced phonon dynamics of two-dimensional butylammonium lead iodide ((BA) 2 PbI 4 ) films under varying excitation intensities, photon energies and temperatures. We reveal that, whereas (BA) 2 PbI 4 exhibits two thermally accessible orthorhombic phases, optically excited phonons transiently direct the lattice to a distinct, higher symmetry tetragonal phase. We show that bandgap oscillations arise from simultaneous distortions of in-plane and out-of-plane octahedral tilt angles with oscillations following a low-to-high symmetry pathway, marked by two vibrational frequencies independent of intensity—a signature of an optically excited Higgs mode. Notably, the Higgs mode at below-bandgap excitation induces a fourfold larger spectral shift than above-bandgap, where photogenerated charge carriers drive the system away from the optically induced tetragonal phase. This study illustrates how optomechanical coupling influences the optical properties of two-dimensional perovskites.

Searching for metastable particles using graph computing

The reconstruction of charged particle trajectories at the Large Hadron Collider and future colliders relies on energy depositions in sensors placed at distances ranging from a centimeter to a meter from the colliding beams. We propose a method of detecting charged particles that decay invisibly after traversing a short distance of about 25 cm inside the experimental apparatus. One of the decay products may constitute the dark matter known to be 84% of all matter at galactic and cosmological distance scales. Our method uses graph computing to cluster spacepoints recorded by two-dimensional silicon pixel sensors into mathematically-defined patterns. The algorithm may be implemented on silicon-based integrated circuits using field-programmable gate array technology to augment or replace traditional computing platforms.
