Modern methodology of designing target reliability into rotating mechanical components

Experimentally determined distributional cycles-to-failure versus maximum alternating nominal strength (S-N) diagrams, and distributional mean nominal strength versus maximum alternating nominal strength (Goodman) diagrams are presented. These distributional S-N and Goodman diagrams are for AISI 4340 steel, R sub c 35/40 hardness, round, cylindrical specimens 0.735 in. in diameter and 6 in. long with a circumferential groove 0.145 in. radius for a theoretical stress concentration = 1.42 and 0.034 in. radius for a stress concentration = 2.34. The specimens are subjected to reversed bending and steady torque in specially built, three complex-fatigue research machines. Based on these results, the effects on the distributional S-N and Goodman diagrams and on service life of superimposing steady torque on reversed bending are established, as well as the effect of various stress concentrations. In addition a computer program for determining the three-parameter Weibull distribution representing the cycles-to-failure data, and two methods for calculating the reliability of components subjected to cumulative fatigue loads are given.

Research study on stabilization and control: Modern sampled data control theory

A numerical analysis of spacecraft stability parameters was conducted. The analysis is based on a digital approximation by point by point state comparison. The technique used is that of approximating a continuous data system by a sampled data model by comparison of the states of the two systems. Application of the method to the digital redesign of the simplified one axis dynamics of the Skylab is presented.

Research study on stabilization and control: Modern sampled-data control theory. Continuous and discrete describing function analysis of the LST system

The dynamics of the Large Space Telescope (LST) control system were studied in order to arrive at a simplified model for computer simulation without loss of accuracy. The frictional nonlinearity of the Control Moment Gyroscope (CMG) Control Loop was analyzed in a model to obtain data for the following: (1) a continuous describing function for the gimbal friction nonlinearity; (2) a describing function of the CMG nonlinearity using an analytical torque equation; and (3) the discrete describing function and function plots for CMG functional linearity. Preliminary computer simulations are shown for the simplified LST system, first without, and then with analytical torque expressions. Transfer functions of the sampled-data LST system are also described. A final computer simulation is presented which uses elements of the simplified sampled-data LST system with analytical CMG frictional torque expressions.

Research study on stabilization and control modern sampled-data control theory

The methods of continuous and discrete describing function analysis were applied to predicting the existence of self-sustained oscillations in the single-axis model of the large space telescope system with nonlinear control moment gyroscope friction characteristics. It is shown that the stability equations may be solved by a numerical-iterative technique using the describing function analysis, instead of the usual graphical methods. The numerical method is found to be effective in leading to a convergent solution rapidly, with an appropriate guess of the initial condition.

Impacts of telemation on modern society

A 90-day study was made of teleoperators, robotics, and remote systems technology in the United States. The purpose of the study was to survey state-of-the-art technology in this field, determine major user needs in medicine, mining, and oceanography, and suggest initiatives where federal research and development funding would most significantly impact the application of this technology to the alleviation of explicit national social problems. Following a review of the findings of this study commencing with user needs, speculation is made on impending developments in the application of telemation to remote emergency medical care and remote mining systems.

Application of modern control theory to the design of optimum aircraft controllers

A procedure is described for synthesis of optimal aircraft control systems by application of the concepts of optimal control theory to time-invariant linear systems with quadratic performance criteria. Essential in this synthesis procedure is the solution of the Riccati matrix equation which results in a constant linear feedback control law for an output regulator which maintains a plant in an equilibrium in the presence of impulse disturbances. An algorithm is derived for designing maneuverable output regulators with selected state variables for feedback.

Modern sampled-data control theory: Design of the Large Space Telescope

This investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of varying the sampling period on the dynamic response of the sampled-data Large Space Telescope (LST) system. A range of sampling periods was recommended based on the criterion that self-sustained oscillations are to be avoided in the LST system. The step responses of the LST system were then investigated when various sampling periods are used. For small sampling periods, the dynamic behavior of the sampled-data system is very similar to that of the continuous-data system. When T is large (but less than 0.25 sec) the overshoot of the step response of the sampled-data becomes greater. However, the dynamic behavior of the sampled-data system may be improved by redesigning the controller. It appears that a sampling period as high as 0.1 second is feasible for the LST system. However, it should be noted that the conclusions are obtained with the existing system model. Other practical considerations such as noise, coupling effects and quantization errors, may restrict the sampling period to a lower value.

Blade selection for a modern axial-flow compressor

The procedures leading to successful design of an axial flow compressor are discussed. The three related approaches to cascade selection are: (1) experimental approach which relies on the use of experimental results from identical cascades to satisfy the velocity diagrams calculated, (2) a purely analytical procedure whereby blade shapes are calculated from the theoretical cascade and viscous flow equations, and (3) a semiempirical procedure which used experimental data together with the theoretically derived functional relations to relate the cascade parameters. Diagrams of typical transonic blade sections with uncambered leading edges are presented.

Application of Skylab EREP photographs to study of the modern episode of accelerated erosion in southern Arizona

The author has identified the following significant results. Indexing and analysis of the SL 2, SL 3, and SL 4 photos of the project area has shown that S-190A coverage with less than 30% clouds totals about 123,000 sq km. The 70-mm unenlarged color, color-infrared, B/W red, and B/W green bands from S-190A are of good to excellent quality; the B/W IR bands from SL 2 are excessively grainy and have very low resolution; those from SL 3 are better but nevertheless have low resolution. The 5-inch unenlarged color transparencies from S-190B are generally of excellent photographic quality. However, where cloud cover is extensive, commonly the S-190A and S-190B color and color-IR photos are correctly exposed for the clouds but considerably underexposed for the ground. The 4X enlargements of all bands of S-190A photos taken by SL 2 are much fuzzier than they should be; evidently the enlarger was not focused properly. The 4X enlargements from SL 3 are much superior.

Research study on stabilization and control: Modern sampled-data control theory. Design of the large space telescope system

Conditions of self-sustained oscillations in a two-axis model of the nonlinear LST system are studied. The describing function of the CMG frictional nonlinearity of the LST system is used for the analysis, as well as continuous-data and discrete-data models of the simplified LST control system. A numerical-iterative method is described for the analysis of the two-axis system. Approximation methods and the direct plotting of the stability equation are implemented in the study. It is shown that although the dynamics of the two axes are identical, the amplitudes of self-sustained oscillations in the two axes may in principle be different. Analysis shows that the LST systems are of equal amplitudes but with 180-degree phase shift.

Application of modern control theory to scheduling and path-stretching maneuvers of aircraft in the near terminal area

A design concept of the dynamic control of aircraft in the near terminal area is discussed. An arbitrary set of nominal air routes, with possible multiple merging points, all leading to a single runway, is considered. The system allows for the automated determination of acceleration/deceleration of aircraft along the nominal air routes, as well as for the automated determination of path-stretching delay maneuvers. In addition to normal operating conditions, the system accommodates: (1) variable commanded separations over the outer marker to allow for takeoffs and between successive landings and (2) emergency conditions under which aircraft in distress have priority. The system design is based on a combination of three distinct optimal control problems involving a standard linear-quadratic problem, a parameter optimization problem, and a minimum-time rendezvous problem.

An application of modern control theory to jet propulsion systems

The control of an airbreathing turbojet engine by an onboard digital computer is studied. The approach taken is to model the turbojet engine as a linear, multivariable system whose parameters vary with engine operating environment. From this model adaptive closed-loop or feedback control laws are designed and applied to the acceleration of the turbojet engine.
