A data acquisition and handling system for the measurement of radial plasma transport rates

A microcomputer serves as a programmable interface between high frequency transient recorders and a digital incremental tape recorder. An interactive program stored in the microcomputer permits the operator to enter various experimental parameters in response to queries from the system. The microcomputer then stores both the experimental parameters and the raw digital data on tape for later processing by a general purpose computer.

Non-Io decametric radiation from Jupiter at frequencies above 30 MHz

Jovian Non-Io decametric radio events extending to frequencies of 30 MHz and above have been found in the Meudon-Nancay observations during 1978 and 1979, in the Voyager 1 PRA observations during February and March, 1979 and in the University of Colorado Radio Astronomy Observatory catalogue for 1960 to 1975. These events, which appear to be mostly associated with the Jovian A-source, query the existence of a cut-off, a little below 30 MHz, for the Non-Io emission and suggest the possibility of a single mechanism for both the Io and the Non-Io radiation.

The role and application of data base management in integrated computer-aided design

The need to marshal the extensive data that figure in design problems is underlined. An approach to managing engineering data for use in a computerized integrated design system is described. The approach is embodied in an experimental integrated software system that is used to demonstrate and evaluate such data management functions as storage, retrieval, query, manipulation, and modification. The development and organization of the experimental integrated design system and the application of the system to selected test problems are discussed, together with insights into data management issues gained from the study.

Development of Integrated Programs for Aerospace-vehicle design (IPAD): Integrated information processing requirements

The engineering-specified requirements for integrated information processing by means of the Integrated Programs for Aerospace-Vehicle Design (IPAD) system are presented. A data model is described and is based on the design process of a typical aerospace vehicle. General data management requirements are specified for data storage, retrieval, generation, communication, and maintenance. Information management requirements are specified for a two-component data model. In the general portion, data sets are managed as entities, and in the specific portion, data elements and the relationships between elements are managed by the system, allowing user access to individual elements for the purpose of query. Computer program management requirements are specified for support of a computer program library, control of computer programs, and installation of computer programs into IPAD.

Preliminary design of a future integrated design system

IPAD is a system of computer programs and data supporting the aerospace-vehicle design process by providing a set of services to aid in the management of a design project, project technical work, and project support work. Its purpose is to integrate people, programs, and data into a unified aerospace-vehicle design system. All project-management and technical data, together with certain standard data, are stored in a data base. The IPAD functions allow project personnel to query the data base and to perform operations on the data. This permits the orderly sequencing of the task elements of a complex operation and provides common access to a single data base by various participating groups who otherwise would require many separate files. These capabilities will be provided on a single host computer or across multiple heterogeneous computers on a distributed progress basis.

An approach for management of geometry data

The strategies for managing Integrated Programs for Aerospace Design (IPAD) computer-based geometry are described. The computer model of geometry is the basis for communication, manipulation, and analysis of shape information. IPAD's data base system makes this information available to all authorized departments in a company. A discussion of the data structures and algorithms required to support geometry in IPIP (IPAD's data base management system) is presented. Through the use of IPIP's data definition language, the structure of the geometry components is defined. The data manipulation language is the vehicle by which a user defines an instance of the geometry. The manipulation language also allows a user to edit, query, and manage the geometry. The selection of canonical forms is a very important part of the IPAD geometry. IPAD has a canonical form for each entity and provides transformations to alternate forms; in particular, IPAD will provide a transformation to the ANSI standard. The DBMS schemas required to support IPAD geometry are explained.

Databases as an information service

The relationship of databases to information services, and the range of information services users and their needs for information is explored and discussed. It is argued that for database information to be valuable to a broad range of users, it is essential that access methods be provided that are relatively unstructured and natural to information services users who are interested in the information contained in databases, but who are not willing to learn and use traditional structured query languages. Unless this ease of use of databases is considered in the design and application process, the potential benefits from using database systems may not be realized.

Comparative analysis of data base management systems

A study to determine if the Remote File Inquiry (RFI) system would handle the future requirements of the user community is discussed. RFI is a locally written and locally maintained on-line query/update package. The current and future on-line requirements of the user community were studied. Additional consideration was given to the types of data structuring the users required. The survey indicated the features of greatest benefit were: sort, subtotals, totals, record selection, storage of queries, global updating and the ability to page break. The major deficiencies were: one level of hierarchy, excessive response time, software unreliability, difficult to add, delete and modify records, complicated error messages and the lack of ability to perform interfield comparisons. Missing features users required were: formatted screens, interfield comparions, interfield arithmetic, multiple file access, security and data integrity. The survey team recommended Kennedy Space Center move forward to state-of-the-art software, a Data Base Management System which is thoroughly tested and easy to implement and use.

A data base processor semantics specification package

A Semantics Specification Package (DBPSSP) for the Intel Data Base Processor (DBP) is defined. DBPSSP serves as a collection of cross assembly tools that allow the analyst to assemble request blocks on the host computer for passage to the DBP. The assembly tools discussed in this report may be effectively used in conjunction with a DBP compatible data communications protocol to form a query processor, precompiler, or file management system for the database processor. The source modules representing the components of DBPSSP are fully commented and included.

The parser generator as a general purpose tool

The parser generator has proven to be an extremely useful, general purpose tool. It can be used effectively by programmers having only a knowledge of grammars and no training at all in the theory of formal parsing. Some of the application areas for which a table-driven parser can be used include interactive, query languages, menu systems, translators, and programming support tools. Each of these is illustrated by an example grammar.
