Microwave radiometer for subsurface temperature measurement

A UHF radiometer, operating at a frequency of 800 MHz, was modified to provide an integral, three frequency voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) circuit in the radio frequency (RF) head. The VSWR circuit provides readings of power transmission at the antenna-material interface with an accuracy of plus or minus 5 percent. The power transmission readings are numerically equal to the emissivity of the material under observation. Knowledge of material emissivity is useful in the interpretation of subsurface apparent temperatures obtained on phantom models of biological tissue. The emissivities of phantom models consisting of lean beefsteak were found to lie in the range 0.623 to 0.779, depending on moisture content. Radiometric measurements performed on instrumented phantoms showed that the radiometer was capable of sensing small temperature changes occurring at depths of at least 19 to 30 mm. This is consistent with previously generated data which showed that the radiometer could sense temperatures at a depth of 38 mm.

Study report on laser storage and retrieval of image data

The theoretical foundation is presented for a system of real-time nonphotographic and nonmagnetic digital laser storage and retrieval of image data. The system utilizes diffraction-limited laser focusing upon thin metal films, melting elementary holes in the metal films in laser focus. The metal films are encapsulated in rotating flexible mylar discs which act as the permanent storage carries. Equal sized holes encompass two dimensional digital ensembles of information bits which are time-sequentially (bit by bit) stored and retrieved. The bits possess the smallest possible size, defined by the Rayleigh criterion of coherent physical optics. Space and time invariant reflective read-out of laser discs with a small laser, provides access to the stored digital information. By eliminating photographic and magnetic data processing, which characterize the previous state of the art, photographic grain, diffusion, and gamma-distortion do not exist. Similarly, magnetic domain structures, magnetic gaps, and magnetic read-out are absent with a digital laser disc system.

DIFMOS - A floating-gate electrically erasable nonvolatile semiconductor memory technology

Electrically alterable read-only memories (EAROM's) or reprogrammable read-only memories (RPROM's) can be fabricated using a single-level metal-gate p-channel MOS technology with all conventional processing steps. Given the acronym DIFMOS for dual-injector floating-gate MOS, this technology utilizes the floating-gate technique for nonvolatile storage of data. Avalanche injection of hot electrons through gate oxide from a special injector diode in each bit is used to charge the floating gates. A second injector structure included in each bit permits discharge of the floating gate by avalanche injection of holes through gate oxide. The overall design of the DIFMOS bit is dictated by the physical considerations required for each of the avalanche injector types. The end result is a circuit technology which can provide fully decoded bit-erasable EAROM-type circuits using conventional manufacturing techniques.

Development of non-volatile semiconductor memory

A 256 word by 8-bit random access memory chip was developed utilizing p channel, metal gate metal-nitride-oxide-silicon (MNOS) technology; with operational characteristics of a 2.5 microsecond read cycle, a 6.0 microsecond write cycle, 800 milliwatts of power dissipation; and retention characteristics of 10 to the 8th power read cycles before data refresh and 5000 hours of no power retention. Design changes were implemented to reduce switching currents that caused parasitic bipolar transistors inherent in the MNOS structure to turn on. Final wafer runs exhibited acceptable yields for a die 250 mils on a side. Evaluation testing was performed on the device in order to determine the maturity of the device. A fixed gate breakdown mechanism was found when operated continuously at high temperature.

An introduction to a unified approach to flexible rotor balancing

Two types of technique for flexible-rotor balancing are examined: the influence coefficient method, and the modal balancing method. Briefly, the influence coefficient method seeks those correction masses in a predetermined set of planes which will minimize measured vibration (readings) at a series of sensors and speeds, as predicted by influence coefficients relating vibration readings to mass additions; the influence coefficients are normally determined by a series of trial mass tests. The modal balancing method seeks to balance the rotor, one mode at a time, with a set of masses specifically selected not to disturb previously balanced lower modes, the sensitivity to this combination of masses is determined empirically by a series of trial mass tests. The two approaches are compared in supercritical-shaft balancing tests, and some common features are stressed for ultimate incorporation into a unified approach toward flexible-rotor balancing.

Heat-pipe sensor for remote leveling

System gives level readings in inaccessible areas. Level sensor is equipped with three thermocouples used to measure temperature differences that arise when pipe is tilted. When platform on which pipe is resting is level, three thermocouple recordings are identical. When readings are unequal, platform is leveled by remote control. System can replace expensive optical equipment and can function in cold, vacuum, and hot humid environments that produce nonlinear expansion and contraction in conventional equipment. Other advantages include low cost, no moving parts, and operation in toxic environments.

Electronic depth micrometer

Device for measuring depth or thickness reads distance of penetration by small-diameter probe. It was developed specifically to measure thickness of wet (uncured) insulation applied to Space Shuttle structures; thin probes penetrate wet insulation to substrate, and reference surface on gage is then positioned against outer surface of insulation to measure its thickness. Gage is easy to use, even by workers wearing gloves or other protective clothing, and allows remote reading and recording of production data.

Computer program documentation: ODRC demand plotting program user's guide

The Orbital Data Reduction Center (ODRC) Demand Plotting Program provides the user with three main options, each of which provides the additional option of generating a numerical summary and/or plots for the Measurement ID's (MID) on the Measurement Node Correlation (MNC) list. Option one reads MID data from word addressable ODRC files, stores the data on a temporary file, and uses it to build the numerical summary and/or plots, according to user input instructions. Options two and three read MID data from a word addressable ODRC file and component node data from a word addressable HSTFLO or HISTRY file. The component node data is used to calculate a predicted MID. Then, for option two, the MID and predicted MID data is used to generate a numerical summary and/or plots. For option three, the component node data itself is used in generating the numerical summary and/or plots. The numerical summary is sent to the BRKPT file, RELOCOK, and can be viewed after the execution of the program using the edit mode to find the desired section of the summary.

Improvements in sparse matrix operations of NASTRAN

A "nontransmit" packing routine was added to NASTRAN to allow matrix data to be refered to directly from the input/output buffer. Use of the packing routine permits various routines for matrix handling to perform a direct reference to the input/output buffer if data addresses have once been received. The packing routine offers a buffer by buffer backspace feature for efficient backspacing in sequential access. Unlike a conventional backspacing that needs twice back record for a single read of one record (one column), this feature omits overlapping of READ operation and back record. It eliminates the necessity of writing, in decomposition of a symmetric matrix, of a portion of the matrix to its upper triangular matrix from the last to the first columns of the symmetric matrix, thus saving time for generating the upper triangular matrix. Only a lower triangular matrix must be written onto the secondary storage device, bringing 10 to 30% reduction in use of the disk space of the storage device.

Image processing via ultrasonics - Status and promise

Acousto-electric devices for electronic imaging of light are discussed. These devices are more versatile than line scan imaging devices in current use. They have the capability of presenting the image information in a variety of modes. The image can be read out in the conventional line scan mode. It can be read out in the form of the Fourier, Hadamard, or other transform. One can take the transform along one direction of the image and line scan in the other direction, or perform other combinations of image processing functions. This is accomplished by applying the appropriate electrical input signals to the device. Since the electrical output signal of these devices can be detected in a synchronous mode, substantial noise reduction is possible

Using 70-mm aerial photography to identify rangeland sites

A south Texas rangeland area was used as a study site to test the use of microdensitometry on 70-mm color-infrared and black-and-white photographs (scale 1:19,000) for distinguishing among 11 range sites (two brushland, seven grassland, two barren land) during the winter (February), spring (May), and summer (August) of 1976. Color-infrared photographs were also taken at a scale of 1:42,000 for the summer date. Film optical density readings were made on one color-infrared film with white light only. The best separations among density readings for all range sites were obtained using white light exposed on color-infrared film in the summer when vegetation was at peak foliage development. Results from this study indicate that 70-mm aerial color-infrared photography at a scale of 1:19,000 or 1:42,000 has good potential for identifying range sites in large and inaccessible areas, and could be a useful tool for range management.

A solid-state digital temperature recorder for space use

A solid-state, digital, temperature recorder has been developed for use in space experiments. The recorder is completely self-contained and includes a temperature sensor; all necessary electronics for signal conditioning, processing, storing, control and timing; and a battery power supply. No electrical interfacing with the particular spacecraft on which the unit is used is required. The recorder is small, light, and sturdy, and has no moving parts. It uses only biocompatible materials and has passed vibration and shock spaceflight qualification tests. The unit is capable of storing 2048, -10 to +45 C, 8-bit temperature measurements taken at intervals selectable by factors of 2 from 1.875 to 240 min; data can be retained for at least 6 months. The basic recorder can be simplified to accommodate a variety of applications by adding memory to allow more data to be recorded, by changing the front end to permit measurements other than temperature to be made, and by using different batteries to realize various operating periods. Stored flight data are read out from the recorder by means of a ground read-out unit.

Heat Capacity Mapping Mission (HCMM) thermal surface water mapping and its correlation to LANDSAT

Graphics are presented which show HCMM mapped water-surface temperature in Lake Anna, a 13,000 dendrically-shaped lake which provides cooling for a nuclear power plant in Virginia. The HCMM digital data, produced by NASA were processed by NOAA/NESS into image and line-printer form. A LANDSAT image of the lake illustrates the relationship between MSS band 7 data and the HCMM data as processed by the NASA image processing facility which transforms the data to the same distortion-free hotline oblique Mercator projection. Spatial correlation of the two images is relatively simple by either digital or analog means and the HCMM image has a potential accuracy approaching the 80 m of the original LANDSAT data. While it is difficult to get readings that are not diluted by radiation from cooler adjacent land areas in narrow portions of the lake, digital data indicated by the line-printer display five different temperatures for open-water areas. Where the water surface response was not diluted by land areas, the temperature difference recorded by HCMM corresponds to in situ readings with rsme on the order of 1 C.
