MAGIK Animation of Robotic Operations for Flight SpaceX-30 to ISS

The MAGIK Robotic analysis team provides kinematic feasibility assessments for the ISS and has produced an animation to evaluate Extravehicular Robotics (EVR) activities for the SpaceX (SpX)-30 flight. Shown EVR activities are preliminary and final operations will be developed by Flight Operations Directorate (FOD) Robotics (ROBO). The animation also displays the current ISS configuration at the time of the flight. Flight SpX-30 includes a SpaceX Cargo Dragon vehicle docked to Node 2 Zenith (N2Z) International Docking Adapter (IDA) and consists of the delivery of the Pump Module (PM) Integrated Assembly (IA). Robotic operations shown include the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) based on the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) for Trunk extraction of the PM IA, maneuvering to the External Stowage Platform 3 (ESP-3), temporary removal of the Control Moment Gyro (CMG) from ESP-3 Site 4, install of the PM IA at ESP-3 Site 3 and re-install of the CMG to ESP-3 Site4. There is no disposal payload for this flight.

Study and development of techniques for automatic control of remote manipulators

An overall conceptual design for an autonomous control system of remote manipulators which utilizes feedback was constructed. The system consists of a description of the high-level capabilities of a model from which design algorithms are constructed. The autonomous capability is achieved through automatic planning and locally controlled execution of the plans. The operator gives his commands in high level task-oriented terms. The system transforms these commands into a plan. It uses built-in procedural knowledge of the problem domain and an internal model of the current state of the world.

TV requirements for manipulation in space

Four tasks (docking, coupling, manipulation, and transportation), stressing work volume and element relationships, are outlined to test a video system for remote manipulation in space. A 4 degree of freedom motion frame was used to evaluate operating parameters, which grouped the visual dimensions into major areas of influence, e.g., depth precision, object differentiation, reference, dynamics, and resolution. Four video systems were included in the simulation testing: a black and white and a color monoscopic system, a stereoscopic system, and a black and white two-view system. The two-view system was found best suited for the operations described.

A comparison of control modes for time-delayed remote manipulation

Transmission time delay in the communication channel of a manual control system is investigated. A time delay can exist in remote manipulation systems, caused by long communication distances or bandwidth limitations. Ferrell 1 conducted the first research in time-delayed manipulation using a two degree-of-freedom manipulator. His subjects, working at time delays of 1.0, 2.1, and 3.2 s, could accomplish tasks even requiring great accuracy. The subjects spontaneously adopted a pattern of moving cautiously, then waiting to see the results of their actions. In experiments with a six degree-of-freedom master-slave manipulator system and time delays of 1.0 to 6 s, Black 2 saw that subjects tried to use the move-and-wait strategy; but there were often difficulties. The subjects seemed to have a problem in holding the master arm stationary while waiting for feedback. Any undesired drifting of the master arm introduced a discrepancy between the positions of the master and slave. This discrepancy was not perceived because of the time delay. The subject would then begin his next move with an inherent error. The difficulty of effectively using the move-and-wait strategy with a master-slave manipulator suggested that rate control might be a more effective control mode with time delay.

Solar maximum repair mission

The Solar Maximum Repair Mission is scheduled for launch in April, 1984. The mission was made possible through a spacecraft designed for on-orbit repair, the availability of spacecraft repair hardware and the availability of the Shuttle System. Repair is expected to result in the availability of significant new science data and a demonstration of the capability for on-orbit repair of spacecraft. Considerations of the capability to maintain and repair spacecraft on-orbit for the future are also discussed.

The impact of remote manipulator structural dynamics on Shuttle on-orbit flight control

The performance of the Space Shuttle on-orbit flight control system during payload operations with the remote manipulator system is described. The changing mass and inertia distribution associated with payload manipulation can have a significant effect on the control authority provided by the orbiter's reaction control jets. Commanded payload motion and jet firings can excite significant flexure in the orbiter/manipulator/payload structure. These effects combine to stress the control capabilities of the flight control system. Data from recent flight tests is presented to illustrate these effects.

Supervisory control of remote manipulation: A preliminary evaluation

A system for supervisory control is described, and preliminary results are presented. Supervisory control, where control is traded between man and computer, offers benefits in the control of a remote manipulator. The system has the potential to accomplish sophisticated tasks. It is indicated that supervisory control yields lower task completion times and is preferred over manual control.

Simulation of man-machine interaction on shuttle payload manipulator

The main objective of this simulation was to evaluate the feasibility of a simplified control system for a remote manipulator for space shuttle payloads. The motion commanded by the operator through the control system to the six degree of freedom manipulator approximates that of a backhoe. Compatibility of low arm damping, heavy payloads, small clearances in the shuttle cargo bay and stringent mission timelines were evaluated. The effects of various devices to enhance visual cues were evaluated. Phase I of the simulation was capture of a payload flying free in space relative to the shuttle. Phase II was simulation of cargo stowage into a mockup of the space shuttle cargo bay. A shuttle remote manipulator control station mockup including TV monitors and hand controllers is used in the simulation. Results evaluating various parameters of the control system and the task, including arm flexibility, are presented.

Robotics technology developments in the United States space telerobotics program

In the same way that the launch of Yuri Gagarin in April 1961 announced the beginning of human space flight, last year's flight of the German ROTEX robot flight experiment is heralding the start of a new era of space robotics. After a gap of twelve years since the introduction of a new capability in space remote manipulation, ROTEX is the first of at least ten new robotic systems and experiments which will fly before the year 2000. As a result of redefining the development approach for space robotic systems, and capitalizing on opportunities associated with the assembly and maintenance of the space station, the space robotics community is preparing a whole new generation of operational robotic capabilities. Expanding on the capabilities of earlier manipulation systems such as the Viking and Surveyor soil scoops, the Russian Lunakhods, and the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (RMS), these new space robots will augment astronaut on-orbit capabilities and extend virtual human presence to lunar and planetary surfaces.
