Evaluation and verification of epitaxial process sequence for silicon solar-cell production

Several process sequences are shown to be of potentially low cost and to perform effectively when applied to the high quality silicon crystals for which they were developed. The extent to which such process sequences can also perform effectively when applied to lower cost thin film solar cells formed by epitaxial deposition of Si on potentially inexpensive substrates of upgraded metallurgical grade Si was investigated.

The extent to which the process sequences perform effectively when applied to film solar cells formed by epitaxial deposition of Si on potentially inexpensive substrates of upgraded metallurgical grade Si is examined. It is concluded that these substrates are satisfactory in their cell performance.

Wavelength predictions for lines of interest in the Ne I sequence

It is noted that the resonance lines of ions in the neon isoelectric sequence are prominent at short wavelengths. Recent observations and calculations in the literature are used to derive estimated wavelengths of likely observable lines emitted by neonlike ions. Optimal conditions for observation are briefly discussed, and estimated wavelengths for three transitions of the neon isoelectric sequence are presented.

Observations of normal main-sequence and giant B stars

When interpreting the continuous and line spectra of B stars, it is helpful to think in terms of a model consisting of a photosphere and a mantle which is the outer part of the atmosphere where the effects of nonradiative heating are seen. A survey of the spectra of these stars shows that conditions in the photosphere determine most of what is seen, and in the case of most B stars, the presence of the mantle can be detected only by a special effort. The shape of the visible continuum spectrum and the shape and absolute value of the UV continuous spectrum as determined from low resolution spectra are discussed. Effective temperature for B stars in the main sequence, including corrections for interstellar extinction and bolometric corrections are explored. The major constituents of B-type spectra, variation of the strength of line along the main sequence band, the UV spectra, UV line blocking, intrinsic colors, and variations in light and spectra are also examined.

Acceleration of convergence of vector sequences

A general approach to the construction of accelerated convergence methods for vector sequences is proposed. A simplified version of minimal polynomial extrapolation is emphasized. The convergence of this method is analyzed and it is shown that it is especially suitable for accelerating the convergence of vector sequences that are obtained when one solves linear systems of equations iteratively.

Phylogenetic sequence of metabolic pathways in Precambrian cellular life

A sequence of major metabolic events is presented as they may have appeared during prokaryote evolution. This is based on (1) the phylogenetic schema derived from sequences of bacterial ferredoxin, 2Fe-2S ferredoxin, 5S ribosomal RNA, and c-type cytochromes; (2) metabolic settings in which these macromolecules are found; and (3) metabolic capabilities of the prokaryotes that carry these molecules.

An automated process sequence using preformed cell contacts and interconnects with a total cost of $0.64 per peak watt in 1986

A process sequence is described which utilizes a preformed metal mesh electrostatically bonded to each cell to provide the front contact. Cells of 12 percent AM1 efficiency have been produced using this scheme. This method also permits access to both contacts on the cell from the back side. In addition, low cost cell interconnection is accomplished using a flexible 'printed circuit' sheet which is ultrasonically bonded to the cell contacts. The complete process sequence as well as automated equipment which also uses ion implantation and pulse annealing is described. The total cost for module fabrication is estimated at $0.64 per peak watt for a 30 MW/year plant.

The chemical structure of DNA sequence signals for RNA transcription

The proposed recognition sites for RNA transcription for E. coli NRA polymerase, bacteriophage T7 RNA polymerase, and eukaryotic RNA polymerase Pol II are evaluated in the light of the requirements for efficient recognition. It is shown that although there is good experimental evidence that specific nucleic acid sequence patterns are involved in transcriptional regulation in bacteria and bacterial viruses, among the sequences now available, only in the case of the promoters recognized by bacteriophage T7 polymerase does it seem likely that the pattern is sufficient. It is concluded that the eukaryotic pattern that is investigated is not restrictive enough to serve as a recognition site.

A search for weak H-alpha emission line pre-main-sequence stars

A spectroscopic survey of 177 stars brighter than about 12.5 in R near four dark clouds in an effort to find pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars with weak H-alpha emission is reported. A number of such stars have been found previously in X-ray images of star formation clouds. Six new candidate PMS stars with EW (H-alpha) between 0.4 and 4.2 A, in addition to four X-ray discovered stars, are found in the L1551 and L1529 clouds in the Taurus-Auriga complex. The total number of pre-main-sequence stars in these clouds appears to be about two times the number of strong emission line T Tauri stars.

Radiation effects on MOS devices - dosimetry, annealing, irradiation sequence, and sources

This paper reports on some investigations of dosimetry, annealing, irradiation sequences, and radioactive sources, involved in the determination of radiation effects on MOS devices. Results show that agreement in the experimental and theoretical surface to average doses support the use of thermo-luminescent dosimeters (manganese activated calcium fluoride) in specifying the surface dose delivered to thin gate insulators of MOS devices. Annealing measurements indicate the existence of at least two energy levels,,s or a activation energies, for recovery of soft oxide MOS devices after irradiation by electrons, protons, and gammas. Damage sensitivities of MOS devices were found to be independent of combinations and sequences of radiation type or energies. Comparison of various gamma sources indicated a small dependence of damage sensitivity on the Cobalt facility, but a more significant dependence in the case of the Cesium source. These results were attributed to differences in the spectral content of the several sources.

Test Sequences for Reed-Solomon Encoders

Theory of Reed-Solomon codes yields sequences of input test symbols. Two specific sequences worked out for codes of 8 bits per symbol with 223 information symbols and 32 parity check symbols per code words. Test patterns also used for decoders.

Theory of winds in late-type evolved and pre-main-sequence stars

Recent observational results confirm that many of the physical processes which are known to occur in the Sun also occur among late-type stars in general. One such process is the continuous loss of mass from a star in the form of a wind. There now exists an abundance of either direct or circumstantial evidence which suggests that most (if not all) stars in the cool portion of the HR diagram possess winds. An attempt is made to assess the current state of theoretical understanding of mass loss from two distinctly different classes of late-type stars: the post-main-sequence giant/supergiant stars and the pre-main-sequence T Tauri stars. Toward this end, the observationally inferred properties of the wind associated with each of the two stellar classes under consideration are summarized and compared against the predictions of existing theoretical models. Although considerable progress has been made in attempting to identify the mechanisms responsible for mass loss from cool stars, many fundamental problems remain to be solved.

Acceleration of convergence of vector sequences

A general approach to the construction of convergence acceleration methods for vector sequence is proposed. Using this approach, one can generate some known methods, such as the minimal polynomial extrapolation, the reduced rank extrapolation, and the topological epsilon algorithm, and also some new ones. Some of the new methods are easier to implement than the known methods and are observed to have similar numerical properties. The convergence analysis of these new methods is carried out, and it is shown that they are especially suitable for accelerating the convergence of vector sequences that are obtained when one solves linear systems of equations iteratively. A stability analysis is also given, and numerical examples are provided. The convergence and stability properties of the topological epsilon algorithm are likewise given.

Load sequence effects on graphite/epoxy /+, -35/2s laminates

Load sequence effects on composite material fatigue behavior are due to the difference in residual strength when fatigue occurs, or the 'boundary effect', and the 'material money effect' due to previous loads. The present model, which allows the isolation of the effects of memory from those of boundary, has been investigated through a test program for the case of /+, -35/2s graphite/epoxy laminates under high-low and low-high load sequences which generated statistical residual strength data. As predicted by the model, the memory effect is present and a good correlation is obtained between test results and the theoretical predictions for both median residual strength and the expected percentage of fatigue failures under dual loading. It is noted, however, that the statistical dispersion of the residual strength test results is much smaller than that of the static ultimate strength.

First known EL5 chondrite - Evidence for dual genetic sequence for enstatite chondrites

The compositionally distinct EH and EL groups together with four (3-6) petrologic types which constitute the enstatite chondrites represent increasing degrees of metamorphic alteration. Although bulk composition variations preclude a simple conversion of EH4 into EL6 material, complex models which involve simultaneous bulk composition and petrologic type variations may be implied by other classification schemes in common use. Attention is presently given to the discovery of the first EL5 chondrite, which breaks the EH3,4-EH5-EL6 sequence and indicates that the enstatite chondrites constitute the two discrete, isochemical metamorphic sequences EH3-5 and EL5-6.

Age-rotation relationship for late-type main-sequence stars

With advancing spectral type and increasing age, late main-sequence stars exhibit monotonic decrease in rotational velocity. It is of great interest to extend the rotation-age relationship to stars of later spectral type. In recent times it has become possible to measure directly the rotational periods from the photometric modulation by Ca II H and K line emission. There have also been successful attempts to relate the chromospheric activity as manifested through Ca II H and K lines to the rotation period, and it was shown that the fraction of total stellar luminosity in Ca II H and K lines, corrected for photospheric contribution, is a function of a single parameter related to P and B-V. In the present investigation, this rotation-activity relation is utilized to infer the rotation periods as a function of spectral type. The period versus B-V plot is employed as a basis to infer that the rotational period of main-sequence stars is a single-valued function of mass (B-V color) and age.

Insights into the phylogenetic positions of photosynthetic bacteria obtained from 5S rRNA and 16S rRNA sequence data

Comparisons of complete 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) sequences established that the secondary structure of these molecules is highly conserved. Earlier work with 5S rRNA secondary structure revealed that when structural conservation exists the alignment of sequences is straightforward. The constancy of structure implies minimal functional change. Under these conditions a uniform evolutionary rate can be expected so that conditions are favorable for phylogenetic tree construction.
