Hydrodynamic impeller stiffness, damping, and inertia in the rotordynamics of centrifugal flow pumps

The lateral hydrodynamic forces experienced by a centrifugal pump impeller performing circular whirl motions within several volute geometries were measured. The lateral forces were decomposed into: (1) time averaged lateral forces and (2) hydrodynamic force matrices representing the variation of the lateral forces with position of the impeller center. It is found that these force matrices essentially consist of equal diagonal terms and skew symmetric off diagonal terms. One consequence of this is that during its whirl motion the impeller experiences forces acting normal and tangential to the locus of whirl. Data on these normal and tangential forces are presented; it is shown that there exists a region of positive reduced whirl frequencies, within which the hydrodynamic forces can be destablizing with respect to whirl.

Stiffness Control of Large Space Structures

A technique for using internal force producing dual element/actuators for vibration suppression of large space structures is proposed. The method is applied to a low order system. Selective modal damping is achieved. The actuators used in this method may be electrically powered. The method is suitable for structures which are too slender or flimsy to permit the use of reaction jet-type actuators.

Stiffness reductions during tensile fatigue testing of graphite/epoxy angle-ply laminates

The monitoring of modulus decay during fatigue testing as an indicator of damage accumulation and incipient failure has frequently been postulated. The present study was designed to generate tensile fatigue data under carefully controlled test conditions. A computerized data acquisition system was used to permit the measurement of dynamic modulus without interrupting the fatigue cycling. Two different 8-ply laminate configurations, viz, (+ or - 45)2s and (+ or - 67.5)2s, of a T300/5208 graphite/epoxy composite were tested. The (+ or 45)2s laminate did exhibit some modulus decay, although there was no well-defined correlation with applied stress level or number of cycles. The (+ or - 67.5)2s laminate did not exhibit any measurable modulus decay. Secondary effects observed included a slight recovery of the modulus decay after a test interruption, and a significant viscoelastic (creep) response of the (+ or - 45)2s laminate during fatigue testing.

Identification of bearing and seal dynamic stiffness parameters

The results are presented of two simple tests, mainly steady state load test and squeeze film test, for establishing the coefficients of bearings and seals. It also discusses the methodology of the tests and some observed conclusions from the obtained data. Perturbation testing results are given as an example of verification and proof of validity of the two previous tests.

Stiffness control of large space structures

A method of using internal force producing dual element/actuators for vibration suppression of large space structures is proposed. The technique is applied to a vibrating string and to a low order system. Response feedback control for the vibrating string and selected modal control are used for achieving the modal damping. The actuators may be electrically powered and are suitable for structures with extremely low rigidity.

Ultrasonic determination of the elastic constants of the stiffness matrix for unidirectional fiberglass epoxy composites

The elastic constants of a fiberglass epoxy unidirectional composite are determined by measuring the phase velocities of longitudinal and shear stress waves via the through transmission ultrasonic technique. The waves introduced into the composite specimens were generated by piezoceramic transducers. Geometric lengths and the times required to travel those lengths were used to calculate the phase velocities. The model of the transversely isotropic medium was adopted to relate the velocities and elastic constants.

Vibration suppression by stiffness control

The feasibility of using piezoelectric ceramics as both sensors and actuators for vibration suppression in a lightweight, flimsy structure was demonstrated. Multimode control was achieved using one sensor and actuator pair. The Positive Position Feedback control strategy requires only knowledge of the natural frequencies of the structure. Implementation of the Positive Position Feedback used only strain measurements to achieve damping, no velocities, or acceleration are needed. All spillover is stabilizing for sufficient small gains.

A micromechanics model of the stiffness and strength of laminates with fiber waviness

A mathematical model based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is proposed for predicting the effective Young's moduli of piecewise isotropic composite laminates with local ply curvatures in the main load-carrying layers. Strains in corrugated layers, In-Phase layers, Out-of-Phase layers are predicted for various geometries and material configurations by assuming matrix layers as elastic foundations of different spring constants. The effective Young's moduli measured from corrugated aluminum specimens and aluminum/epoxy specimens with In-Phase and Out-of-Phase wavy patterns coincide very well with the model predictions. Moire fringe analysis of an In-Phase specimen and an Out-of-Phase specimen are also presented confirming the main assumption of the model related to the elastic constraint due to the matrix layers. The present model is also compared with the experimental results and other models, including the micro-buckling models, published in the literature. The results of the present study show that even a very small scale local ply curvature produces a noticeable effect on the mechanical constitutive behavior of a laminated composite.

Finite element analysis of the stiffness of fabric reinforced composites

The objective of this work is the prediction of all three dimensional elastic moduli of textile fabric reinforced composites. The analysis is general enough for use with complex reinforcing geometries and capable of subsequent improvements. It places no restrictions on fabric microgeometry except that the unit cell be determinate and rectangular. The unit cell is divided into rectangular subcells in which the reinforcing geometries are easier to define and analyze. The analysis, based on inhomogeneous finite elements, is applied to a variety of weave, braid, and knit reinforced composites. Some of these predictions are correlated to test data.

A variable stiffness strut using strain induced bending for vibration suppression in the evolutionary model

A new piezoceramic strut has been developed. This strut utilizes strain induced bending as a means of actuation. The significance of this design is that the displacement of the strut's motion arm is independent of the expansion of the piezoceramic material. Design criteria was developed using continuous and finite element modeling techniques. Experimental and analytical results were compared. Finally, a numerical analysis was conducted that demonstrated the benefits of the piezoceramic strut configuration.

Stiffnesses by (TtN) ensemble molecular dynamics

Calculation of elastic constants requires initializing a lattice of atoms, an h matrix defining the computational cell boundaries, and the parameters defining the interatomic potentials, then numerically integrating the equations of motion for the atoms and the computational cell boundaries, calculating strains and stresses at each timestep, and updating at each timestep the average quantities required for calculation of fluctuations. Enforcements of the DYNAMO FORTRAN code included addition of documentation, improved memory management and data flow, and enabling use of several interatomic potentials. Documentation included headers for each subroutine, which document the parameters input to the routine, algorithms employed, and output.
