Two-demensional analysis of heat and mass transfer in porous media using the strongly implicit procedure

Numerical results of the heat and mass transfer in a porous matrix are presented. The coupled, nonlinear partial differential equations describing this physical phenomenon are solved in finite difference form for two dimensions, using a new iterative technique (the strongly implicit procedure). The influence of the external environment conditions (heating and pressure) is shown to produce two-dimensional flow in the porous matrix. Typical fluid and solid temperature distributions in the porous matrix and internal pressure distributions are presented.

Dynamical phase transition in a strongly hybridized phonon-triplon chain

In this article, we study a dimerized spin-1/2 chain, such as CuGeO 3 , hosting triplon excitations coupled to optical phonons under weak terahertz laser driving. Both phonons and triplons weakly lose energy into the surrounding baths, forming a non-equilibrium steady state. In the strong phonon-triplon coupling regime, phonons near the two-triplon continuum hybridize strongly with triplons. Using mean-field Lindblad dynamics, we show that strong hybridization induces sharp first-order phase transitions—either single or simultaneous double—in the emission spectrum, mainly due to nonlinearities in the chain and the instantaneous breaking of spatial inversion symmetry, as captured by the phonon displacement. Using mean-field Floquet analysis of harmonic modes in both sectors, we analytically confirm the existence of these phase transitions. Furthermore, we map the complete steady-state phase diagram by varying key control parameters and provide experimentally relevant parameters for observing these transitions in laser-driven CuGeO 3 .

Relation Between Lightning Activity of Summer and Winter Thunderclouds and Surface Electric Field Variation, Japan

In winter, active convective clouds frequently form along the coastline of the Hokuriku district, in association with strong advection of Siberian air masses over the Sea of Japan. On the other hand, in summer, many thunderclouds form in the Kanto region in the afternoon every day. Summer and winter thunderclouds were investigated by field works, operation of the C- and X-band weather radars and a car-borne fieldmill. The investigation found a very close relation between the temporal variation of 3-dimensional radar echo and surface electric field magnitude detected by a car-borne fieldmill in the case of summer thunderclouds and winter convective clouds or thunderclouds. The study probed the close relation among radar echoes, quantity of thunderclouds and surface electric field magnitude in the summer and winter seasons. We think that summer thundercloud activity can basically be equated with winter thundercloud lightning activity, except that the magnitude of surface electric field under summer thunderclouds in the case of the Kanto region cannot be equated with that under winter thunderclouds in the case of the Hokuriku district in winter.

New Phosphoranylideneketenes and Phosphoranylidenethioketenes‐Synthesis, Structure, Spectroscopy, and Lewis Base Properties

Posphoranylideneketene Ph 3 PCCO and its sulfur analogue, Ph 3 PCCS, are cumulated ylides that exhibit diverse reactivity and distinct structural features. Herein, we present the first systematic study of substituent effects on the structures and bonding of a series of aryl- and alkyl-substituted phosphoranylideneketenes, R 3 PCCO [R = Et, cyclohexyl, NMe 2 , 4-Me 2 N-C 6 H 4 , 4-MeO-C 6 H 4 , 4-CF 3 -C 6 H 4 , 3,5-(CF 3 ) 2 -C 6 H 3 ], prepared from the corresponding phosphonium salts, [R 3 PCH 2 COOEt]X (X = Br, I) and two equivalents of Na[N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ]. Multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy, supported by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealed that the bond strength within the central P═C═C═O fragment increases with the electron-deficiency of the aryl substituents at phosphorus. The corresponding phosphoranylidenethioketenes, R 3 PCCS (R = Et, cyclohexyl, NMe 2 , 4-Me 2 N-C 6 H 4 , 4-MeO-C 6 H 4 , 4-CF 3 -C 6 H 4 ), were obtained by reactions of R 3 PCCO with CS 2 . Here, the rate of conversion of R 3 PCCO into R 3 PCCS decreases with increasing electron deficiency at phosphorus. Both R 3 PCCO and R 3 PCCS act as relatively weak ambidentate Lewis donors, yet they form stable acid-base adducts with strong Lewis acids such as B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 and Al(C 6 F 5 ) 3 .

Reactivity of net-zero carbon alcohol fuels and their corresponding aldehyde intermediates on PGM-based commercial oxidation catalysts for lean-burn emissions control

Alcohol net-zero carbon fuels will play a significant role in decarbonization of the hard-to-electrify transportation sectors. However, the combustion process in alcohol-fueled engines generate toxic aldehydes. For commercialization of net-zero carbon fuels on engines, compliance with the stringent U.S. EPA regulations is necessary. Here, this contribution focuses on reactivity of alcohols and aldehydes on commercial diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) to inform selection of future net-zero carbon fuels. Alcohol (and aldehyde) light-off temperatures were measured on aged DOCs under full synthetic engine-exhaust conditions. Methanol was the most reactive, while ethanol completely oxidized at higher temperatures. Alcohols typically formed less reactive aldehyde intermediates. DRIFTS revealed strongly adsorbing surface formates and acetates during methanol and ethanol oxidation, respectively, resulting in inhibition effects. Preliminary alcohol oxidation mechanisms combining flow reactor and DRIFTS observations are presented. Aldehydes inhibited CO oxidation. Minimal N 2 O formation was observed for the alcohols investigated.

Anatomy of Local Structural Disorder of Ni(II) Species in MgCl 2 –KCl Molten Salts

Understanding the speciation of metal ions dissolved in molten salts (MS) is critical for enabling a broad range of high-temperature energy applications, including MS nuclear reactors and concentrated solar power plants. However, due to the inherent dynamicity of metal species in the MS environment and the strong temperature dependencies of their multiple coexisting forms, they are difficult to resolve structurally. Herein, we show that combining in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations is necessary to uncover and quantify the coexisting coordination states of Ni(II) in molten MgCl 2 –KCl mixtures and explain how the temperature and salt composition control their relative populations. Furthermore, from the interionic angle and distance distributions of nickel in different coordination states obtained from AIMD simulations, it is evident that for each coordination state, the width and skewness of their bonding distributions increase with increasing coordination number. In conclusion, the combination of XAS with first-principles modeling to resolve metastable metal species in MS is critical for understanding their behavior over a wide range of temperatures and chemical environments in nuclear and solar applications.

Emergence of Long-Range Angular Correlations in Low-Multiplicity Proton-Proton Collisions

This Letter presents the measurement of near-side associated per-trigger yields, denoted ridge yields, from the analysis of angular correlations of charged hadrons in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV . Long-range ridge yields are extracted for pairs of charged particles with a pseudorapidity difference of 1.4 < | Δ η | < 1.8 and a transverse momentum of 1 < p T < 2 GeV / c , as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity. This Letter extends the measurements of the ridge yield to the low multiplicity region, where in hadronic collisions it is typically conjectured that a strongly interacting medium is unlikely to be formed. The precision of the new low multiplicity results allows for the first direct quantitative comparison with the results obtained in e + e − collisions at s = 91 GeV and s = 183 – 209 GeV , where initial-state effects such as preequilibrium dynamics and collision geometry are not expected to play a role. In the multiplicity range 8 ≲ ⟨ N ch ⟩ ≲ 24 where the e + e − results have good precision, the measured ridge yields in p p collisions are substantially larger than the limits set in e + e − annihilations. Consequently, the findings presented in this Letter suggest that the processes involved in e + e − annihilations do not contribute significantly to the emergence of long-range correlations in p p collisions. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Determination of Oscillator Strength of CdSe Nanoplatelets from Strong Light-Matter Coupling

We report exciton-polaritons formed from core-only, core-crown, and core-shell NPLs, which, alongside finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations of Fabry-Pérot cavity mode volume, allow for the verification of core-only and determination of core-crown and core-shell oscillator strengths. Additionally, we show that polaritons can be used not only as a means of altering the properties of coupled emitters, but as an analytical tool to better understand the properties of coupled emitters.

Topological dissipation and the small-scale fields in turbulent gases.

It is shown that a large-scale magnetic field possesses a hydrostatic equilibrium only if the pattern of small-scale variations is uniform along the large-scale field. Thus equilibrium obtains only if the variations in the field consist of simple twisting of the lines, with the twists extending uniformly the full length of the field. Any more complicated topology, such as two or more flux tubes wrapped around each other to form a rope, or braided or knotted flux tubes, is without equilibrium, no matter what fluid pressures are applied along the individual lines of force. The result is rapid dissipation and field-line merging, which quickly reduces the topology to the simple equilibrium form. The effect explains the absence of strong small-scale fields in the solar photosphere and in interstellar space in spite of the vigorous turbulence.

Mars - Are observed white clouds composed of H2O.

A total of 252 occurrences of white clouds are studied. Water abundances are compared with those of white clouds as a function of latitude on Mars. It appears not necessarily to be the case that observed cloud frequencies will always follow water abundances. Martian white cloud frequencies tend to follow the distribution of water both seasonally and latitudinally on the planet, which strongly suggests that most white clouds are formed from water vapor.

Wave patterns and clear air turbulence.

Two cases of CAT in which the turbulence was apparently associated with Kelvin-Helmholtz billows are discussed. In the first case, long waves embedded in the mean flow appeared to modify a deep shear layer and produce local regions of enhanced shear, which subsequently gave rise to billow development. In the second case, the billows formed near the lower boundary of a strong baroclinic zone. In both cases, moderate CAT was encountered by T-33 aircraft, and the clear air structures were discernible with a sensitive 10.7-cm wavelength radar.

Comet West and the scattering function of cometary dust

Observations of Comet West (1975n) at wavelengths from 0.5 to 18 microns and at a variety of scattering angles are used to infer the scattering phase function for the cometary dust. This function is strongly peaked in the forward direction. The form of the function indicates that the particles are dielectric grains with radii of approximately 1 micron. Abrupt increases in the intrinsic brightness of the coma (both in scattered sunlight and in thermal emission) are consistent with the projected times of comet fragmentation.

Reactions between NO/+/ and metal atoms using magnetically confined afterglows

A new method of studying thermal energy ion-neutral collision processes involving nongaseous neutral atoms is described. A long magnetic field produced by a solenoid in a vacuum chamber confines a thermal-energy plasma generated by photoionization of gas at very low pressure. As the plasma moves toward the end of the field, it is crossed by a metal atom beam. Ionic products of ion-atom reactions are trapped by the field and both the reactant and product ions move to the end of the magnetic field where they are detected by a quadrupole mass filter. The cross sections for charge transfer between NO(+) and Na, Mg, Ca, and Sr and that for rearrangement between NO(+) and Ca have been obtained. The charge-transfer reaction is found strongly dominant over the rearrangement reaction that forms metallic oxide ions.

Deformation at the Decaturville impact structure, Missouri

The Decaturville structure is a small area of intense disturbance marked by surface exposure of Precambrian rock and minor lead-zinc mineralization. The present paper gives a detailed analysis of the associated deformation processes on the basis of detailed mapping and study of drill core. The presence of shock-deformation features and the complex structural pattern revealed from the analysis are strong indications that the Decaturville structure was formed by impact of an extraterrestrial body.

Development of Surfaces Optically Suitable for Flat Solar Panels

A reflectometer which can separately evaluate the spectral and diffuse reflectivities of surfaces is described. A phase locked detection system for the reflectometer is also described. A selective coating on aluminum potentially useful for flat plate solar collector applications is presented. The coating is composed of strongly bound copper oxide (divalent) and is formed by an etching process performed on an aluminum alloy with high copper content. Fabrication costs are expected to be small due to the one stop fabrication process. A number of conclusions gathered from the literature as to the required optical properties of flat plate solar collectors are discussed.

The association of coronal mass ejection transients with other forms of solar activity

Coronal mass-ejection transients observed with the white-light coronagraph on Skylab are found to be associated with several other forms of solar activity. There is a strong correlation between such mass-ejection transients and chromospheric H-alpha activity, with three-quarters of the transients apparently originating in or near active regions. It is inferred that 40% of transients are associated with flares, 50% are associated with eruptive prominences solely (without flares), and more than 70% are associated with eruptive prominences or filament disappearances (with or without flares). Nine of ten flares that displayed apparent mass ejections of H-alpha-emitting material from the flare site could be associated with coronal transients. Within each class of activity, the more energetic events are more likely to be associated with an observable mass ejection.

Laser Doppler measurements of laminar and turbulent flow in a pipe bend

The streamwise components of velocity in the flow through a ninety degree bend of circular cross section for which the ratio of radius of curvature to diameter is 2.8 were measured. The development of strong pressure driven secondary flow in the form of a pair of counter rotating vortices in the steamwise direction is shown. Refractive index matching at the fluid wall interface was not employed; the displacement of the measurement volume due to refraction is allowed for in simple geometrical calculations.

Chlorine nitrate - The sole product of the ClO + NO2 + M recombination

A laser operating at 266 nm is used to photolyze the product of the ClO + NO2 + M reaction, and the yield of Cl atoms, measured by resonance fluorescence, is found to be identical with that from equivalent concentrations of ClONO2. This is interpreted as a strong indication that no other isomers are formed in the recombination reaction. Evidence for isomers is surveyed, and the apparent forward-and-reverse-rate constant discrepancy is explained as a probable uncertainty in the thermochemistry.
