Fail-safe bidirectional valve driver

Cross-coupled diodes are added to commonly used bidirectional valve driver circuit to protect circuit and power supply. Circuit may be used in systems requiring fail-safe bidirectional valve operation, particularly in chemical- and petroleum-processing control systems and computer-controlled hydraulic or pneumatic systems.

A solenoid failure detection system for cold gas attitude control jet valves

The development of a solenoid valve failure detection system is described. The technique requires the addition of a radioactive gas to the propellant of a cold gas jet attitude control system. Solenoid failure is detected with an avalanche radiation detector located in the jet nozzle which senses the radiation emitted by the leaking radioactive gas. Measurements of carbon monoxide leakage rates through a Mariner type solenoid valve are presented as a function of gas activity and detector configuration. A cylindrical avalanche detector with a factor of 40 improvement in leak sensitivity is proposed for flight systems because it allows the quantity of radioactive gas that must be added to the propellant to be reduced to a practical level.

Apollo 11 mission: Glycol temperature control valve

An analysis was made of the cause or causes of malfunctions in the glycol temperature control valve during the Apollo 11 mission. The valve was designed to control inlet temperatures at 45 (+ or - 3) F. Test results show malfunctions were caused by a bearing failure on the worm gear shaft in the actuator. It was concluded that no corrective action was needed because an existing procedure allows manual setting of the value at a position which will meet system requirements.

Advanced technology for Space Shuttle Auxiliary Propellant Valves.

Propellant shutoff valves required for the operation of the pulse modulated gaseous hydrogen/gaseous oxygen rocket engines for the Space Shuttle Auxiliary Propulsion System are specified to operate for one million cycles over a ten-year period with zero maintenance, very fast response, very low leakage, and over a wide temperature range. Based on an analytical leakage and wear model, sealing configurations were conceived, sized, and developed. Two prototype valves featuring different components were designed, built, and evaluated for 100,000 cycles. Design concepts and test results are presented.

Shutoff and throttling valve

Leaktight shutoff, precise flow control, and very low pressure drop are incorporated in all-metal valve designed for operation under extreme temperatures. Valve constructed with refractory metal is intended for control of high-temperature liquid cesium, but has applications related to control of high- and low-temperature liquids and gases.

Poppet valve control of throat stability bypass to increase stable airflow range of a Mach 2.5. inlet with 60 percent internal contraction

The throat of a Mach 2.5 inlet with a coldpipe termination was fitted with a stability-bypass system. System variations included several stability bypass entrance configurations. Poppet valves controlled the bypass airflow. The inlet stable airflow range achieved with each configuration was determined for both steady state conditions and internal pulse transients. Results are compared with those obtained without a stability bypass system. Transient results were also obtained for the inlet with a choke point at the diffuser exit and for the inlet with large and small stability bypass plenum volumes. Poppet valves at the stability bypass exit provided the inlet with a stable airflow range of 20 percent or greater at all static and transient conditions.

Space shuttle prototype check valve development

Contaminant-resistant seal designs and a dynamically stable prototype check valve for the orbital maneuvering and reaction control helium pressurization systems of the space shuttle were developed. Polymer and carbide seal models were designed and tested. Perfluoroelastomers compatible with N2O4 and N2H4 types were evaluated and compared with Teflon in flat and captive seal models. Low load sealing and contamination resistance tests demonstrated cutter seal superiority over polymer seals. Ceramic and carbide materials were evaluated for N2O4 service using exposure to RFNA as a worst case screen; chemically vapor deposited tungsten carbide was shown to be impervious to the acid after 6 months immersion. A unique carbide shell poppet/cutter seat check valve was designed and tested to demonstrate low cracking pressure ( 2.0 psid), dynamic stability under all test bench flow conditions, contamination resistance (0.001 inch CRES wires cut with 1.5 pound seat load) and long life of 100,000 cycles (leakage 1.0 scc/hr helium from 0.1 to 400 psig).

Direct-heating solar-collector dump valve

Five-port ganged valve isolates collector from primary load system pressure and drains collectors, allowing use of direct heating with all its advantages. Valve is opened and closed by same switch that controls pump or by temperature sensor set at O C, while providing direct dump option.

Miniature diaphragm valve for medical equipment

Valve assembly keeps nutrient out of moving parts of valve by physically isolating plunger from fluid. Poppet and diaphragm are molded together, and latter is shaped to act as static seal, which remains seated during the operation. As plunger moves, diaphragm also moves to form separate cavity for nutrient and thus isolates it from plunger cavity and latching mechanism.

A throat-bypass stability-bleed system using relief valves to increase the transient stability of a mixed-compression inlet

A stability-bleed system was installed in a YF-12 flight inlet that was subjected to internal and external airflow disturbances in the NASA Lewis 10 by 10 foot supersonic wind tunnel. The purpose of the system is to allow higher inlet performance while maintaining a substantial tolerance (without unstart) to internal and external disturbances. At Mach numbers of 2.47 and 2.76, the inlet tolerance to decreases in diffuser-exit corrected airflow was increased by approximately 10 percent of the operating-point airflow. The stability-bleed system complemented the terminal-shock-control system of the inlet and did not show interaction problems. For disturbances which caused a combined decrease in Mach number and increase in angle of attack, the system with valves operative kept the inlet started 4 to 28 times longer than with the valves inoperative. Hence, the stability system provides additional time for the inlet control system to react and prevent unstart. This was observed for initial Mach numbers of 2.55 and 2.68. For slow increase in angle of attack at Mach 2.47 and 2.76, the system kept the inlet started beyond the steady-state unstart angle. However, the maximum transient angles of attack without unstart could not be determined because wind-tunnel mechanical-stop limits for angle of attack were reached.

State of the mitral valve in rabbits with hypokinesia

In hypokinesia, edema of all the layers of the mitral value was observed, which resulted in morphological changes of the cellular and noncellular components. An increase in ratio of elastic and collagenic fibers in the value was also observed along with and changes in their structural and staining properties. The observed changes can limit valve mobility and can result in manifestations of cardiac valve insufficiency, which is found clinically.
