Generic Photovoltaic Inverter Model in an Electromagnetic Transients Simulator for Transmission Connected Plants

This report proposes a generic model specification of a photovoltaic inverter applied in transmission-connected plants for implementation in an electromagnetic transients simulator. The model specification contains the necessary control loops to meet the fault ride-through performance requirements in the IEEE 2800-2022 standard. The report details the implementation and example parameterization of the model in PSCAD™. Simulation results verify the model meets the performance requirements. Comparisons of the model’s response to laboratory test measurements of a commercial 2.2 MVA storage inverter show the model can reasonably predict the response of commercial equipment.

Metallo-graphene nanocomposites and methods for using metallo-graphene nanocomposites for electromagnetic energy conversion

Nanocomposites in accordance with many embodiments of the invention can be capable of converting electromagnetic radiation to an electric signal, such as signals in the form of current or voltage. In some embodiments, metallic nanostructures are integrated with graphene material to form a metallo-graphene nanocomposite. Graphene is a material that has been explored for broadband and ultrafast photodetection applications because of its distinct optical and electronic characteristics. However, the low optical absorption and the short carrier lifetime of graphene can limit its use in many applications. Nanocomposites in accordance with various embodiments of the invention integrates metallic nanostructures, such as (but not limited to) plasmonic nanoantennas and metallic nanoparticles, with a graphene-based material to form metallo-graphene nanostructures that can offer high responsivity, ultrafast temporal responses, and broadband operation in a variety of optoelectronic applications.

A High-Fidelity Electromagnetic Transient Model of Inverter-based Resources Integrated to an IEEE-9 Bus System for Benchmarking Studies

An inverter-based resource (IBR) is a source of electricity that is asynchronously connected to the electrical grid via an electronic power converter. These power sources lack the intrinsic behaviors of the standard power plants, presenting specific challenges to system stability. These power sources lack the intrinsic behaviors of the standards power plants and their features are almost entirely defined by the control strategy used on them, presenting specific challenges to system stability as their penetration increases into the already fragile Bulk Power System (BPS). Utilizing renewable energy has a great upside but the electrical industry needs to understand the requirements like performing electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation studies in planning and/or in interconnection studies. This paper presents the development of a high-fidelity EMT model based on commercial equipment and field parameters, which at the same time aims to study the increasing penetration of IBRs and their impact on the actual BPS. The open-source EMT model developed will be a benchmarking example that can be used to evaluate algorithms in the power grid (including evaluating grid-forming controls, power system monitoring and operation, etc.).

Simulation Studies of Electromagnetic Energy Absorption by Hydride Materials

This paper investigates the key parameters that contribute to electromagnetic (EM) energy absorption and heating of hydride materials which could be used to release hydrogen for use as a fuel. Our simulation study using COMSOL focuses on EM energy absorption and resulting temperature rise in a thin circular slab of hydride material using resonant dipole and loop antennas. Presented results delineate the effects of conductivity, relative permeability, antenna type and slab size on temperature rise when the distance and amount of RF power are kept fixed.

Electromagnetic shower separation in LArTPCs: study of the calorimetric method at LArIAT

This thesis reports a study of the prospects of using calorimetry for separating photon- from electron-initiated electromagnetic (EM) showers in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs), a prevalent need for neutrino oscillation experiments based on the LArTPC technology as $\gamma$-initiated showers are a significant background to electron neutrino ($\nu_e$) events, whose signature is electron showers. From events simulated in the LArIAT (Liquid Argon In A Testbeam) experiment's detector, we quantitatively evaluated the dependence of the calorimetric separation on the initial momentum and position (along the beamline) of the primary particle. We could conclude that the separation is more efficient if the primary particle is created inside the chamber, whereas the impact of the momentum is not as significant. Furthermore, a first step was taken towards applying the calorimetric method to the showers measured in LArIAT. A convolutional neural network (CNN) trained on simulation was deployed to find EM showers among the events collected by the experiment. The charge deposition at the beginning of the showers found is centered at a plausible value, although the width of the distribution demands further inquiry.

Cosmological Consequences of Unconstrained Gravity and Electromagnetism

Motivated by the quantum description of gauge theories, we study the cosmological effects of relaxing the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints in general relativity and Gauss' law in electromagnetism. We show that the unconstrained theories have new source terms that mimic a pressureless dust and a charge density that only follows geodesics. The source terms may be the simplest explanation for dark matter and generically predict a charged component. We comment that discovery of such terms would rule out inflation and be a direct probe of the initial conditions of the universe.

A Generic and Multi-Functional Electromagnetic Transient Model for Grid-Following Inverter: Preprint

This article presents a generic and multi-functional electromagnetic transient (EMT) dynamic model of grid following (GFL) inverter-based resource (IBR) using the PSCAD TM software platform. The features of the developed model includes the flexibility in selecting various types and combinations of DC sources covering PV modules, battery modules, ideal DC source module, as well as flexibility in selecting either switched or averaged model of inverter. This model also covers exhaustive lists of controller logic covering open-loop/closed-loop PQ dispatch control, DC voltage and AC terminal voltage control along with the conventional current control designed in dq-domain, aB- domain and positive-negative sequence domain. Moreover, this model is equipped with the flexibility in selecting various types of current limiting schemes that includes saturation-based as well as latching-based current limiter, anti-windup protection. Moreover, the EMT model is agnostic to the MVA rating and is suitable for interfacing transmission systems by being complaint with the IEEE Std. 2800. The generality in the power circuits and the multi-functional options in operation and control of the developed EMT model makes it suitable for both academia and industry to study various power system aspects not limited to but such as fault behavior of GFL IBR and impacts on protection system, transient stability of a system interfaced with large number of GFL IBRs etc.

Exploiting Multi-Domain Features for Detection of Unclassified Electromagnetic Signals

Deep Learning based classification techniques have shown excellent performance in static environments, where the training and testing samples are drawn from the same distribution. However, real world scenarios often present samples that do not belong to the known set of classes chosen during training. This is quite common for electromagnetic signals, where it is impractical to assume that all possible waveforms are known a-priori, specially in scenarios like warfare. To address this problem, we propose a deep learning based adversarial model where the generator learns to generate waveform features that can deceive the discriminator model as true samples. We introduce domain knowledge of wireless signals by decomposing the signal into a lower dimensional unique feature set, which is used for classifying known versus unknown signals. We further introduce multiple domain representations of the signal to extract features and combine them together to accurately classify new waveforms as an unknown class. Our results show that combined features from multiple domains outperform any single domain representation, especially at low SNR regimes with fewer number of samples to classify.

Electromagnetic Shower Reconstruction and Identification in FASER's Emulsion Detector for LHC Forward Neutrino Measurements

We present methods for electromagnetic shower reconstruction and identification in the FASERnu emulsion detector using 100 GeV and 200 GeV electron test-beam data from the CERN SPS H4 beamline. The reconstruction employs a clustering-based algorithm without energy-dependent tuning to determine shower axes. A multi-level identification chain comprising track pre-selection, a cut-based selection, and a BDT classifier achieves combined background rejection rates of 99.99% (100 GeV) and 99.94% (200 GeV). The method reaches total reconstruction and identification efficiencies of 58.9% (100 GeV) and 70.8% (200 GeV) evaluated from simulated samples. Energy reconstruction using the total number of reconstructed segments as the calorimetric estimator yields relative biases of +0.6% (100 GeV) and -0.8% (200 GeV), with resolutions of 25.4% and 22.6%, respectively. Systematic uncertainties on the energy reconstruction are dominated by variations in emulsion film detection efficiency, contributing (+10.9%/-8.2%) at 100 GeV and (+10.3%/-6.9%) at 200 GeV. The methodology provides a validated framework for electron neutrino identification with the FASERnu detector at the LHC.

Photon scattering by a 4π -spherically-focused ultrastrong electromagnetic wave

The scattering of high-power probe laser pulses by tightly focused ultrastrong laser pulses has been investigated through a semiclassical approach using a perturbative method based on the Born approximation. Under a 4π-spherically-focused ultrastrong light field, the electric permittivity and magnetic permeability tensors for vacuum are calculated from the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian to show the nonlinear birefringent property of vacuum. And, from permittivity and permeability tensors, the scattering potential is derived for the Born approximation. The first-order solution of the Born approximation is taken as an electric field scattered from the 4π-spherically-focused laser pulse when a probe laser pulse propagates through the focused laser field. The differential cross section of the nonlinear birefringent vacuum is derived, and the number of photons scattered from the nonlinear birefringent vacuum is analyzed in the laser power range of 10-1000 PW.

Coherent Electromagnetic Emission from Relativistic Magnetized Shocks

Relativistic magnetized shocks are a natural source of coherent emission, offering a plausible radiative mechanism for fast radio bursts (FRBs). We present first-principles 3D simulations that provide essential information for the FRB models based on shocks: the emission efficiency, spectrum, and polarization. The simulated shock propagates in an e ± plasma with magnetization σ > 1 . The measured fraction of shock energy converted to coherent radiation is ≃ 10 -3 σ -1 , and the energy-carrying wave number of the wave spectrum is ≃ 4ω c /c, where ω c is the upstream gyrofrequency. The ratio of the O-mode and X-mode energy fluxes emitted by the shock is ≃ 0.4σ -1 . The dominance of the X mode at σ >> 1 is particularly strong, approaching 100% in the spectral band around 2ω c . We also provide a detailed description of the emission mechanism for both X and O modes.
