Five scales of airflow associated with a series of downbursts on 16 July 1980

An attempt is made to estimate wind speed in a series of windstorms, which occurred in a 50-km wide zone from Chicago to Detroit on July 16, 1980, based on three types of airborne objects: a 180 kg chimney, a 1000 kg corn storage bin, and lumber from damaged roofs. The maximum wind speed obtained is 63 + or - 10 m/sec, or 140 + or - 25 mph. SMS/GOES pictures show that the parent cloud was oval-shaped, with a lifetime in excess of 12 hours. That the downbursts began when overshooting activities subsided is indicated by the rapid shrinking of overshooting areas enclosed by -66 C isotherms at the onset of the Chicago-area downbursts. Cloud-top features and wind effects on the ground are presented with no attempt to relate them, on the basis of current conceptual models.

Four- and five-layer silicon-clad dielectric waveguides

Computer modeling studies conducted on four-layer silicon-clad dielectric waveguides indicate that the attenuation (alpha) and mode index (beta/K) behave as exponentially damped sinusoids as the silicon thickness is increased. The observed effect can be explained quite simply as a periodic coupling between the guided modes of the lossless structure and the lossy modes supported by the high-refractive index silicon. The attenuation and mode index are significantly altered by conductivity changes in the silicon; an amplitude modulator and an intensity modulator were proposed using these results. Predicted high attenuations in the device may be reduced significantly with a silicon dioxide buffer layer between the semiconductor and the polystyrene guide. Experimental confirmation of the predicted characteristics is still necessary. A number of thin-silicon film waveguides have been RF sputtered but attenuation measurements to verify the damped oscillatory behavior are forthcoming. Conductivity variations of the silicon should demonstrate the modulation capabilities.

Reflectance of litter accumulation levels at five wavelengths within the 0.5- to 2.5 micron waveband

Reflectance was measured for 1-m2 range grass plots with two canopy treatments (standing and clipped) and four levels of litter accumulation and for grain sorghum with two canopy treatments. Reflectance was significantly higher at the 0.65- to 1.65-, and 2.20-micrometer. Wavelengths for both grass and grain sorghum canopies when the canopies were clipped and the resulting litter was removed. The natural accumulation of litter under the grass canopy did not significantly affect reflectance. The 1.65- and 2.20-micrometer wavelength reflectances of the live grass and the intact litter were 21.8% and 16.2%, respectively, and those of grain sorghum were 21.8% and 16.5%, respectively.

Five-minute oscillations as a subsurface probe of sunspot structure

Observations of the sun which revealed the presence of oscillations due to the 5-min p-modes in the quiet atmosphere are reported. Umbral oscillations with a 145-190 sec period were detected, along with penumbral waves with a 180-250 sec period. The waves have been linked to resonant magneto-atmospheric wave modes in the sunspot atmosphere. The observations were made with a vacuum tower telescope and echelle spectrograph at Sacramento Peak Observatory. Results are presented of the Fe gamma 6,302.5 line. Irregularities in the umbral structures as to which p-mode initiated the activity are taken as evidence that the oscillations are related to activities in sunspot structure below the solar surface. It is shown that the occurrence of three successive p-mode crossings by the oscillations may be valuable for probing the effective depth of a sunspot.

Residual strength of five boron/aluminum laminates with crack-like notches after fatigue loading

Boron/aluminum specimens were made with crack-like slits in the center and with various proportions of 0 and + or - 45 deg plies. They were fatigue loaded and then fractured to determine their residual strengths. The fatigue loads were generally in the range of 60 to 80 percent of the static tensile strength of the specimen as determined from a previous study, and the stress ratio was .05. For virtually all of the specimens the fatigue loading was continued for 100,000 cycles. The specimens were radiographed after the fatigue loading to determine the nature of the fatigue damage. A few specimens were sectioned and examined in a scanning electron microscope after being radiographed in order to verify the interpretation of the radiographs and also to get a better insight into the nature of the fatigue damage. The results indicate that the fatiguing does not significantly affect the strength of the specimens tested. The results of the radiography and of the scanning electron microscopy indicate that the 45 deg plies suffer extensive damage in the form of split and broken fibers and matrix cracking in the vicinity of the ends of the split. By contrast, the only significant damage to the 0 deg plies was a single 0 deg matric crack growing from the ends of the slit and between the 0 deg fibers.

The lithium isotope ratio in five F or G dwarfs

Observations of the 6707-A LiI doublet obtained at high resolution and photometric precision are reported for two F dwarfs and three G dwarfs known to have narrow lines and strong 6707-A absorption. Adjacent lines of Ca 1 and Fe 1 are used to predetermine accurately the position and the broadening of theoretical LiI profiles fitted to the observed ones, leaving the abundances of Li-6 and Li-7 as the only adjustable parameters of the calculated profiles. Upper limits R = (Li-6)/(Li-7) less than 0.1 are obtained for four of the stars, while R is less than about 0.1 for Xi UMa A. The total Li/H abundances range from 3 x 10 to the -10th to 10 x 10 to the -10th, with uncertainties probably not exceeding a factor of 2.

Variation of cosmic rays and solar wind properties with respect to the heliospheric current sheet. I - Five-GeV protons and solar wind speed

One of the principal uncertainties in understanding the propagation of cosmic rays in the heliosphere is related to the role of latitudinal transport by gradient and curvature drifts. The steady state distribution of cosmic rays with respect to the heliospheric current sheet or in latitude may possibly provide some information regarding the existing problems. Newkirk and Lockwood (1981) have considered the current sheet with respect to its role as a natural surface of symmetry for the propagation of cosmic rays in the heliosphere. The present investigation represents an extension of this study. Central objectives are related to a determination of the gradient of 5-GeV cosmic rays with respect to the heliospheric current sheet at 1 AU, the possible effect of the solar cycle upon such gradients, and an evaluation of the ability of several theoretical models to explain the gradients.

Historical data and analysis for the first five years of KSC STS payload processing

General and specific quantitative and qualitative results were identified from a study of actual operational experience while processing 186 science, applications, and commercial payloads for the first 5 years of Space Transportation System (STS) operations at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC). All non-Department of Defense payloads from STS-2 through STS-33 were part of the study. Historical data and cumulative program experiences from key personnel were used extensively. Emphasis was placed on various program planning and events that affected KSC processing, payload experiences and improvements, payload hardware condition after arrival, services to customers, and the impact of STS operations and delays. From these initial considerations, operational drivers were identified, data for selected processing parameters collected and analyzed, processing criteria and options determined, and STS payload results and conclusions reached. The study showed a significant reduction in time and effort needed by STS customers and KSC to process a wide variety of payload configurations. Also of significance is the fact that even the simplest payloads required more processing resources than were initially assumed. The success to date of payload integration, testing, and mission operations, however, indicates the soundness of the approach taken and the methods used.

The chromospheres and coronae of five G-K main-sequence stars

Previous data and high and low dispersion IUE observations of Chi 1 Ori, Alpha Cen A, Xi Boo A, Alpha Cen B, and Epsilon Eri are used to model the atmospheres of these stars from the high chromosphere to the corona. The energy lost by radiation and transferred by thermal conduction is investigated to establish the heating requirements, and results similar to those found for the solar atmosphere are found. The observed emission measurement distribution below 100,000 K can be described by a model in which Alfven wave energy input, observed through nonthermal line broadening, is balanced by radiation losses. Comparison of the coronal, transition region, and chromospheric pressures shows scaling relations which are compatible with previous flux correlations.

Prevention of disuse osteoporosis: Effect of sodium fluoride during five weeks of bed rest

An attempt was made to modify factors which promote disuse osteoporosis and thereby prevent it from occurring. Since fluoride is currently used to enhance bone formation in the treatment of low turnover osteoporosis, it was hypothesized that if the fluoride ion was available over a long period of time that it would slow the demonstrated loss of calcium by inhibiting bone resorption and enhancing bone formation. This study was used to determine whether oral medication with sodium F will modify or prevent 5 weeks of bed rest induced disuse osteoporosis, to determine the longitudinal effects of 5 weeks of bed rest on PTH, CT and calcitriol, to measure muscle volume changes and metabolic activity by magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy during prolonged bed rest, to measure changes in peak muscle strength and fatigability, and to measure bone turnover in bone biopsies. Subjects were studied during 1 week of equilibration, 4 weeks of control ambulation, 5 weeks of bed rest, and 1 week of reambulation.

A five-level program for ions of astrophysical interest

An interactive FORTRAN program is presented which determines the physical conditions in a nebula given an appropriate emission-line intensity ratio, or the line emissivities given a density and temperature. A method for estimating ionic abundances based on the H-beta emissivity is also included. The relevant underlying physics is reviewed and a detailed description of the operation of the program given. Uncertainties in the interpretation of the results are discussed briefly.

A five-band study of spiral galaxies - X-ray, optical, near- and far-infrared, and radio continuum correlations

A statistical analysis is given of the relationships between global emission properties of spiral galaxies, including the radio continuum, far-infared, near-infrared H-band, optical (B), and X-ray emission. Different properties are observed in early-type and in late-type spiral galaxies, which can be ascribed to the presence of prominent bulges in the former. In late-type spirals, the statistical properties of the emission at different wavelengths are consistent with a common disk/arm origin. The power-law exponents of the correlations are consistent with a steeper IMF in low-luminosity galaxies and with the presence of an obscured starburst component in high-luminosity galaxies. The strongest correlation of the radio continuum luminosity with any other variable is with the far-infrared, suggesting that the radio emission is disjoint from the older low-mass stellar component.
