Irradiation Experiments on High Efficiency Nanowire Solar Cells Including Tilted Incidence Angle

Nanowire based solar cells have promising potential to become the next generation of space solar cells. In this study we corroborate their high radiation tolerance by irradiating high efficiency GaAs (efficiency > 15 %) nanowire solar cells with 1 MeV electrons at a fluence of 10 16 e - /cm 2 . Additionally, we theoretically show that the damage in nanowire solar cells is expected to be slightly dependent on the incidence angle and the geometry of the nanowire array. However, experimentally, two sets of GaAs nanowire solar cells have been irradiated with 1 MeV electrons at normal incidence and with a 25° tilted angle exhibiting a similar degradation.

Recycling the Energy of Indoor Light: Highly Efficient Organic Photovoltaics via a Ternary Strategy

A ternary approach in organic photovoltaics (OPV) is simple and reliable to effectively tune the optical, electrical and morphological properties of the photoactive layer for high efficiency as well as long-term stability under 1 sun. However, there have been few papers reporting spectra and weak illumination compared to outdoor light. In this study, by using two compatible 16 structures, we demonstrate a simultaneous modulation of light absorption and molecular donor polymers (PM7 and PM7 D1) with slightly-different band gaps and similar chemical packing under ambient conditions, which resulted in efficient indoor OPVs exhibiting power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 20% under 1000 lux of warm white light-emitting diode (2900 K). From morphological analysis, we infer that PM7 serves to seed nucleation of PM7 D1 in the ternary blend, templating its crystallization and alignment along the PM7 backbone. Such templating effect leads to increased domain spacing and relative degree of crystallinity (rDoC) compared to those of each binary system. We further show that higher rDoC helps suppress both bimolecular and trap-assisted recombination of photogenerated charges in the ternary devices. As a result, the complementary absorption and synergistic molecular assembly of the two donor polymers enhance the short-circuit current density as to increase the average PCEs from 9.6 to 10.3% under 1 sun and from 18.7 to 20.0% under 1000 lux. We envision that our strategy of incorporating both a planar and a flexible donor polymer with similar chemical structures can be generally applicable to attain a high performance ternary OPV under both 1 sun and indoor light.

Towards high-efficiency particle detection using superconducting microwire arrays

Here, we present a detailed study of an 8-channel 1×1 mm 2 WSi superconducting microwire single photon detector (SMSPD) array exposed to 120 GeV hadron beam and 120 GeV muon beam at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron H6 beamline. Following up on our first detailed characterization of the efficiency and response of an SMSPD fabricated on a 3 nm WSi film, we report measurements of enhanced particle detection efficiency using a sensor fabricated from a thicker 4.7 nm-thick WSi film. We also report the first SMSPD detection efficiency measurement made for muons. Measurements are enabled by a silicon tracking telescope providing 10 μm in-situ spatial resolution. The results show a fill factor-normalized detection efficiency of 75% and a time resolution of about 130 ps across pixels. These findings represent a significant advancement toward developing high-efficiency SMSPD charged particle tracking systems with simultaneous precision timing, with potential applications in future accelerator-based experiments such as the FCC-ee and Muon Collider.

Correlating Electronic Structure and Device Physics with Mixing Region Morphology in High-Efficiency Organic Solar Cells

The donor/acceptor interaction in non-fullerene organic photovoltaics leads to the mixing domain that dictates the morphology and electronic structure of the blended thin film. Initiative effort is paid to understand how these domain properties affect the device performances on high-efficiency PM6:Y6 blends. Different fullerenes acceptors are used to manipulate the feature of mixing domain. It is seen that a tight packing in the mixing region is critical, which could effectively enhance the hole transfer and lead to the enlarged and narrow electron density of state (DOS). As a result, short-circuit current (J SC ) and fill factor (FF) are improved. The distribution of DOS and energy levels strongly influences open-circuit voltage (V OC ). The raised filling state of electron Fermi level is seen to be key in determining device V OC . Energy disorder is found to be a key factor to energy loss, which is highly correlated with the intermolecular distance in the mixing region. A 17.53% efficiency is obtained for optimized ternary devices, which is the highest value for similar systems. The current results indicate that a delicate optimization of the mixing domain property is an effective route to improve the V OC , J SC , and FF simultaneously, which provides new guidelines for morphology control toward high-performance organic solar cells.

MoO x S y /Ni 3 S 2 Microspheres on Ni Foam as Highly Efficient, Durable Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Hydrogen energy derived from water splitting is the cleanest renewable energy source, but it is also very challenging to achieve because the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) requires highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts. Here, we have fabricated a novel hierarchical system of amorphous molybdenum oxy/sulfide microspheres with crystalline Ni 3 S 2 intergrown in situ on Ni foam (MoO x S y /Ni 3 S 2 /NF) as an outstanding electrocatalyst for HER. The MoO x S y /Ni 3 S 2 /NF demonstrates an ultra-low overpotential of 58 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 and extremely durable stability (>200 h), suggesting superior performance comparable to that of Pt-C/NF under acidic conditions. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) determines the average valence state of Mo to be +(5 + δ), with a coordination motif by O and S. To explain such high HER activity, a [Mo 2 O 2 (S,O) 4 ] dimer-based periodic model structure with the average composition of [Mo 4 O 8 S 4 ] interfaced with the Ni 3 S 2 (101) surface is proposed. The interactions between the Ni of Ni 3 S 2 and bridging S/O of [Mo 4 O 8 S 4 ] result in an average formal Mo charge state between +5 and +6, and significant charge transfer from Ni 3 S 2 to [Mo 4 O 8 S 4 ] activates the Mo = O bonds. The calculated |ΔG H* | of less than 50 meV suggests that the double-bonded O is the most active site. This work points to the importance of oxy/sulfides with Mon+ (+5 < n < +6) as exceptional electrochemical catalysts for HER.

Identification of some key parameters limiting the performance of high-efficiency silicon solar cells

This paper presents, for the first time, a detailed sensitivity analysis of key cell parameters on silicon-cell efficiency by incorporating advanced solar cell physics in a sophisticated numerical simulation program. It delineates the true physical barriers to obtaining a high-efficiency silicon solar cell. Specific parameters presently limiting cell efficiency are identified to be the minority carrier lifetime and the recombination velocities at the front and back surfaces. Practical cell efficiencies in the vicinity of 22 percent are estimated to be attainable by using good quality silicon crystal and substantially reducing surface recombination velocities.
